| 1 Giacobbe ancora proseguì l'intrapreso viaggio: e furono incontro a lui gli Angeli di Dio. | 1 Jacob went on his way and the angels of God met him; |
| 2 E vedutili disse: Questi sono gli accampamenti di Dio: e diede a quel luogo il nome di Mahanaim, vale a dire Accampamenti. | 2 and when Jacob saw them he said, "This is God's army!" So he called the name of that place Mahanaim. |
| 3 E spedì messi ancora innanzi a sé al fratello Esaù nella terra di Seir, nella regione di Edom. | 3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom, |
| 4 E fece loro questo comandamento, dicendo: Voi direte così al signor mio Esaù: Giacobbe tuo fratello dice: io andai pellegrino nella casa di Laban, e vi sono stato sino a questo dì. | 4 instructing them, "Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, 'I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now; |
| 5 Ho de' bovi, e degli asini, e delle pecore, e de' servi, e delle schiave: e adesso invio messi al signor mio per trovar grazia dinanzi a lui. | 5 and I have oxen, asses, flocks, menservants, and maidservants; and I have sent to tell my lord, in order that I may find favor in your sight.'" |
| 6 E tornarono i messi a Giacobbe, e riferirono: Abbiam trovato il tuo fratello Esaù, e questi ecco che viene in fretta ad incontrarti con quattrocento uomini. | 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men with him." |
| 7 S'intimorì Giacobbe grandemente; e pieno di ansietà divise la gente, ch'era seco, e i greggi ancora, e le pecore, e i bovi, e i cammelli in due squadre, | 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies, |
| 8 Dicendo: Se Esaù arriverà, e darà addosso ad una squadra, l'altra squadra, che resta, si salverà. | 8 thinking, "If Esau comes to the one company and destroys it, then the company which is left will escape." |
| 9 E disse Giacobbe: Dio del padre mio Abraham, e Dio del padre mio Isaac: Signore, che dicesti a me: Torna alla tua terra, e al luogo dove sei nato, e io ti farò del bene. | 9 And Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD who didst say to me, 'Return to your country and to your kindred, and I will do you good,' |
| 10 Io sono indegno di tutte le tue misericordie, e della fedeltà, colla quale tu hai mantenute le promesse fatte al tuo servo. Solo col mio bastone io passai questo (fiume) Giordano: e ora ritorno con due squadre. | 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the steadfast love and all the faithfulness which thou hast shown to thy servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan; and now I have become two companies. |
| 11 Liberami dalle mani di mio fratello Esaù, perocché io lo temo forte, che in arrivando non uccida madre, e figliuoli. | 11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, lest he come and slay us all, the mothers with the children. |
| 12 Tu hai detto di farmi del bene, e di dilatar la mia stirpe come l'arena del mare, la quale per la moltitudine non può contarsi. | 12 But thou didst say, 'I will do you good, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.'" |
| 13 E avendo dormito in quel luogo per quella notte, mise a parte di quello che avea, doni pel suo fratello Esaù, | 13 So he lodged there that night, and took from what he had with him a present for his brother Esau, |
| 14 Dugento capre, venti capri, dugento pecore e venti montoni, | 14 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, |
| 15 Trenta cammelli femmine, che avean figliato, co' loro parti, quaranta vacche, e venti tori, venti asine con dieci loro rede. | 15 thirty milch camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she-asses and ten he-asses. |
| 16 E inviò per mezzo dei suoi servi ognuno di questi greggi separato dall'altro, e disse a' suoi servi: Andate innanzi a me: e siavi un intervallo tra gregge e gregge. | 16 These he delivered into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, "Pass on before me, and put a space between drove and drove." |
| 17 E al primo comandò, e disse: Se incontri il mio fratello Esaù, e ch'ei ti domandi: Di chi sei tu? ovvero: Dove vai tu? o di chi son queste cose, alle quali vai appresso? | 17 He instructed the foremost, "When Esau my brother meets you, and asks you, 'To whom do you belong? Where are you going? And whose are these before you?' |
| 18 Risponderai: Sono di Giacobbe tuo servo; egli manda questi doni al mio signore Esaù: ed egli stesso vien dietro a noi. | 18 then you shall say, 'They belong to your servant Jacob; they are a present sent to my lord Esau; and moreover he is behind us.'" |
| 19 Simili ordini diede al secondo, e al terzo, e a tutti quelli che andavano dietro ai greggi, dicendo: Nella stessa guisa parlate ad Esaù, quando lo troverete. | 19 He likewise instructed the second and the third and all who followed the droves, "You shall say the same thing to Esau when you meet him, |
| 20 E soggiungerete: Lo stesso servo tuo Giacobbe seguita le nostre pedate; imperocché egli ha detto: Lo placherò co' doni, che vanno innanzi, e poscia vedrò lui: forse si renderà a me propizio. | 20 and you shall say, 'Moreover your servant Jacob is behind us.'" For he thought, "I may appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterwards I shall see his face; perhaps he will accept me." |
| 21 Andarono adunque innanzi a lui i doni; ed egli quella notte si stette nello alloggiamento. | 21 So the present passed on before him; and he himself lodged that night in the camp. |
| 22 E alzatosi molto per tempo, prese le sue due mogli, e le due schiave con gli undici figliuoli, e passò il guado di Jaboc. | 22 The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. |
| 23 E quando furon passate tutte le cose, che a lui appartenevano, | 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. |
| 24 Ei si rimase solo: ed ecco un uomo fece con lui alla lotta fino alla mattina. | 24 And Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. |
| 25 E questi veggendo, che nol potea superare, toccò a lui il nervo della coscia, il quale subitamente restò secco. | 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and Jacob's thigh was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. |
| 26 E disse a lui: Lasciami andare; che già viene l'aurora. Rispose (Giacobbe): Non ti lascerò andare, se tu non mi benedici. | 26 Then he said, "Let me go, for the day is breaking." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go, unless you bless me." |
| 27 Disse adunque: Qual nome è il tuo? Rispose: Giacobbe. | 27 And he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob." |
| 28 E quegli (disse): Il tuo nome non sarà Giacobbe, ma Israele: perocché se a petto a Dio sei stato forte, quanto più vincerai tutti quanti gli uomini? | 28 Then he said, "Your name shall no more be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed." |
| 29 Giacobbe lo interrogò: Dimmi, con qual nome ti chiami? Rispose: Perché domandi del mio nome? E lo benedisse nello stesso luogo. | 29 Then Jacob asked him, "Tell me, I pray, your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And there he blessed him. |
| 30 E Giacobbe pose a quel luogo il nome di Phanuel, dicendo: Ho veduto il Signore faccia a faccia, e l'anima mia ha avuto salute. | 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, "For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved." |
| 31 E il sole venne a nascer subito, dopo che egli si fu avanzato di là da Phanuel: ed egli zoppicava del piede. | 31 The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his thigh. |
| 32 Per questa ragione i figliuoli d'Israele fino a questo dì non mangiano il nervo, che si seccò nella coscia di Giacobbe: perché quegli toccò il nervo della coscia di lui, e (il nervo) restò senza moto. | 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the sinew of the hip which is upon the hollow of the thigh, because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh on the sinew of the hip. |
