DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
Remember, O Lord, what is come upon us: consider and behold our reproach.1 Yahweh, remember what has happened to us; consider, and see our degradation.
Our inheritance is turned to aliens: our houses to strangers.2 Our heritage has passed to strangers, our homes to foreigners.
We are become orphans without a father: our mothers are as widows.3 We are orphans, we are fatherless; our mothers are like widows.
We have drunk our water for money: we have bought our wood.4 We have to buy our own water to drink, our own wood we can get only at a price.
We were dragged by the necks, we were weary and no rest was given us.5 The yoke is on our necks; we are persecuted; exhausted we are, al owed no rest.
We have given our hand to Egypt, and to the Assyrians, that we might be satisfied with bread.6 We made a pact with Egypt, with Assyria, to have plenty of food.
Our fathers have sinned, and are not: and we have borne their iniquities.7 Our ancestors sinned; they are no more, and we bear the weight of their guilt.
Servants have ruled over us: there was none to redeem us out of their hand.8 Slaves rule us; there is no one to rescue us from their clutches.
We fetched our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the desert.9 At peril of our lives we earn our bread, by risking the sword of the desert.
Our skin was burnt as an oven, by reason of the violence of the famine.10 Our skin is as hot as an oven, from the scorch of famine.
They oppressed the women in Sion, and the virgins in the cities of Juda.11 The women in Zion have been raped, the young girls in the towns of Judah.
The princes were hanged up by their hand: they did not respect the persons of the ancient.12 Princes have been hanged by their hands; the face of the old has won no respect.
They abused the young men indecently: and the children fell under the wood.13 Youths have been put to the mil , boys stagger under loads of wood.
The ancients have ceased from the gates: the young men from the choir of the singers.14 The elders have deserted the gateway; the young have given up their music.
The joy of our heart is ceased, our dancing is turned into mourning.15 Joy has vanished from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning.
The crown is fallen from our head woe to us, because we have sinned.16 The crown has fallen from our heads. Alas that ever we sinned!
Therefore is our heart sorrowful, therefore are our eyes become dim,17 This is why our hearts are sick; this is why our eyes are dim:
For mount Sion, because it is destroyed, foxes have walked upon it.18 because Mount Zion is desolate; jackals roam to and fro on it.
But thou, O Lord, shalt remain for ever, thy throne from generation to generation.19 Yet you, Yahweh, rule from eternity; your throne endures from age to age.
Why wilt thou forget us for ever? why wilt thou forsake us for a long time?20 Why do you never remember us? Why do you abandon us so long?
Convert us, O Lord, to thee, and we shall be converted: renew our days, as from the beginning.21 Make us come back to you, Yahweh, and we will come back. Restore us as we were before!
But thou hast utterly rejected us, thou art exceedingly angry against us.22 Unless you have utterly rejected us, in an anger which knows no limit.
