1 Una volta in salvo, venimmo a sapere che l'isola si chiamava Malta.	1 Once we had come safely through, we discovered that the island was cal ed Malta.
2 Gli indigeni ci trattarono con rara umanità; ci accolsero tutti attorno a un gran fuoco, che avevano acceso perché era sopraggiunta la pioggia ed era freddo.	2 The inhabitants treated us with unusual kindness. They made us all welcome by lighting a huge firebecause it had started to rain and the weather was cold.
3 Mentre Paolo raccoglieva un fascio di sarmenti e lo gettava sul fuoco, una vipera, risvegliata dal calore, lo morse a una mano.	3 Paul had collected a bundle of sticks and was putting them on the fire when a viper brought out by theheat attached itself to his hand.
4 Al vedere la serpe pendergli dalla mano, gli indigeni dicevano tra loro: "Certamente costui è un assassino, se, anche scampato dal mare, la Giustizia non lo lascia vivere".	4 When the inhabitants saw the creature hanging from his hand they said to one another, 'That manmust be a murderer; he may have escaped the sea, but divine justice would not let him live.'
5 Ma egli scosse la serpe nel fuoco e non ne patì alcun male.	5 However, he shook the creature off into the fire and came to no harm,
6 Quella gente si aspettava di vederlo gonfiare e cadere morto sul colpo, ma, dopo avere molto atteso senza vedere succedergli nulla di straordinario, cambiò parere e diceva che era un dio.	6 although they were expecting him at any moment to swell up or drop dead on the spot. After they hadwaited a long time without seeing anything out of the ordinary happen to him, they changed their minds andbegan to say he was a god.
7 Nelle vicinanze di quel luogo c'era un terreno appartenente al "primo" dell'isola, chiamato Publio; questi ci accolse e ci ospitò con benevolenza per tre giorni.	7 In that neighbourhood there were estates belonging to the chief man of the island, whose name wasPublius. He received us and entertained us hospitably for three days.
8 Avvenne che il padre di Publio dovette mettersi a letto colpito da febbri e da dissenteria; Paolo l'andò a visitare e dopo aver pregato gli impose le mani e lo guarì.	8 It happened that Publius' father was in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to seehim, and after a prayer he laid his hands on the man and healed him.
9 Dopo questo fatto, anche gli altri isolani che avevano malattie accorrevano e venivano sanati;	9 When this happened, the other sick people on the island also came and were cured;
10 ci colmarono di onori e al momento della partenza ci rifornirono di tutto il necessario.	10 they honoured us with many marks of respect, and when we sailed they put on board the provisionswe needed.
11 Dopo tre mesi salpammo su una nave di Alessandria che aveva svernato nell'isola, recante l'insegna dei Diòscuri.	11 At the end of three months we set sail in a ship that had wintered in the island; she came fromAlexandria and her figurehead was the Twins.
12 Approdammo a Siracusa, dove rimanemmo tre giorni	12 We put in at Syracuse and spent three days there;
13 e di qui, costeggiando, giungemmo a Reggio. Il giorno seguente si levò lo scirocco e così l'indomani arrivammo a Pozzuoli.	13 from there we followed the coast up to Rhegium. After one day there a south wind sprang up and onthe second day we made Puteoli,
14 Qui trovammo alcuni fratelli, i quali ci invitarono a restare con loro una settimana. Partimmo quindi alla volta di Roma.	14 where we found some brothers and had the great encouragement of staying a week with them. Andso we came to Rome.
15 I fratelli di là, avendo avuto notizie di noi, ci vennero incontro fino al Foro di Appio e alle Tre Taverne. Paolo, al vederli, rese grazie a Dio e prese coraggio.	15 When the brothers there heard about us they came to meet us, as far as the Forum of Appius and theThree Taverns. When Paul saw them he thanked God and took courage.
16 Arrivati a Roma, fu concesso a Paolo di abitare per suo conto con un soldato di guardia.	16 On our arrival in Rome Paul was al owed to stay in lodgings of his own with the soldier who guardedhim.
17 Dopo tre giorni, egli convocò a sé i più in vista tra i Giudei e venuti che furono, disse loro: "Fratelli, senza aver fatto nulla contro il mio popolo e contro le usanze dei padri, sono stato arrestato a Gerusalemme e consegnato in mano dei Romani.	17 After three days he cal ed together the leading Jews. When they had assembled, he said to them,'Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested inJerusalem and handed over to the Romans.
18 Questi, dopo avermi interrogato, volevano rilasciarmi, non avendo trovato in me alcuna colpa degna di morte.	18 They examined me and would have set me free, since they found me guilty of nothing involving thedeath penalty;
19 Ma continuando i Giudei ad opporsi, sono stato costretto ad appellarmi a Cesare, senza intendere con questo muovere accuse contro il mio popolo.	19 but the Jews lodged an objection, and I was forced to appeal to Caesar, though not because I hadany accusation to make against my own nation.
20 Ecco perché vi ho chiamati, per vedervi e parlarvi, poiché è a causa della speranza d'Israele che io sono legato da questa catena".	20 That is why I have urged you to see me and have a discussion with me, for it is on account of thehope of Israel that I wear this chain.'
21 Essi gli risposero: "Noi non abbiamo ricevuto nessuna lettera sul tuo conto dalla Giudea né alcuno dei fratelli è venuto a riferire o a parlar male di te.	21 They answered, 'We have received no letters from Judaea about you, nor has any of the brothersarrived here with any report or story of anything to your discredit.
22 Ci sembra bene tuttavia ascoltare da te quello che pensi; di questa setta infatti sappiamo che trova dovunque opposizione".	22 We think it would be as wel to hear your own account of your position; al we know about this sect isthat it encounters opposition everywhere.'
23 E fissatogli un giorno, vennero in molti da lui nel suo alloggio; egli dal mattino alla sera espose loro accuratamente, rendendo la sua testimonianza, il regno di Dio, cercando di convincerli riguardo a Gesù, in base alla Legge di Mosè e ai Profeti.	23 So they arranged a day with him and a large number of them visited him at his lodgings. He put hiscase to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them about Jesus, arguing from the Law ofMoses and the prophets from early morning until evening;
24 Alcuni aderirono alle cose da lui dette, ma altri non vollero credere	24 and some were convinced by what he said, while the rest were sceptical.
25 e se ne andavano discordi tra loro, mentre Paolo diceva questa sola frase: "Ha detto bene lo Spirito Santo, per bocca del profeta Isaia, ai nostri padri:	25 So they disagreed among themselves and, as they went away, Paul had one last thing to say to them,'How aptly the Holy Spirit spoke when he told your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah:
26 'Va' da questo popolo e di' loro: Udrete con i vostri orecchi, ma non comprenderete; guarderete con i vostri occhi, ma non vedrete.'	26 Go and say to this people: Listen and listen but never understand! Look and look but never perceive!
27 'Perché il cuore di questo popolo si è indurito: e hanno ascoltato di mala voglia con gli orecchi; hanno chiuso i loro occhi per non vedere con gli occhi non ascoltare con gli orecchi, non comprendere nel loro cuore e non convertirsi, perché io li risani.'	27 This people's heart is torpid, their ears dul ed, they have shut their eyes tight, to avoid using their eyesto see, their ears to hear, using their heart to understand, changing their ways and being healed by me.
28 Sia dunque noto a voi che questa salvezza di Dio viene ora rivolta ai pagani ed essi l'ascolteranno!".	28 'You must realise, then, that this salvation of God has been sent to the gentiles;they wil listen to it.'

30 Paolo trascorse due anni interi nella casa che aveva preso a pigione e accoglieva tutti quelli che venivano a lui,	30 He spent the whole of the two years in his own rented lodging. He welcomed all who came to visithim,
31 annunziando il regno di Dio e insegnando le cose riguardanti il Signore Gesù Cristo, con tutta franchezza e senza impedimento.	31 proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching the truth about the Lord Jesus Christ with completefearlessness and without any hindrance from anyone.
