1 Appena cessato il tumulto, Paolo mandò a chiamare i discepoli e, dopo averli incoraggiati, li salutò e si mise in viaggio per la Macedonia.	1 When the disturbance was over, Paul sent for the disciples and, after speaking words ofencouragement to them, said good -- bye and set out for Macedonia.
2 Dopo aver attraversato quelle regioni, esortando con molti discorsi i fedeli, arrivò in Grecia.	2 On his way through those areas he said many words of encouragement to them and then made hisway into Greece,
3 Trascorsi tre mesi, poiché ci fu un complotto dei Giudei contro di lui, mentre si apprestava a salpare per la Siria, decise di far ritorno attraverso la Macedonia.	3 where he spent three months. He was leaving by ship for Syria when a plot organised against him bythe Jews made him decide to go back by way of Macedonia.
4 Lo accompagnarono Sòpatro di Berèa, figlio di Pirro, Aristarco e Secondo di Tessalonica, Gaio di Derbe e Timòteo, e gli asiatici Tìchico e Tròfimo.	4 He was accompanied by Sopater, son of Pyrrhus, who came from Beroea; Aristarchus and Secunduswho came from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus who werefrom Asia.
5 Questi però, partiti prima di noi ci attendevano a Tròade;	5 They al went on to Troas where they waited for us.
6 noi invece salpammo da Filippi dopo i giorni degli Azzimi e li raggiungemmo in capo a cinque giorni a Tròade dove ci trattenemmo una settimana.	6 We ourselves left Philippi by ship after the days of Unleavened Bread and joined them five days later atTroas, where we stayed for a week.
7 Il primo giorno della settimana ci eravamo riuniti a spezzare il pane e Paolo conversava con loro; e poiché doveva partire il giorno dopo, prolungò la conversazione fino a mezzanotte.	7 On the first day of the week we met for the breaking of bread. Paul was due to leave the next day, andhe preached a sermon that went on til the middle of the night.
8 C'era un buon numero di lampade nella stanza al piano superiore, dove eravamo riuniti;	8 A number of lamps were lit in the upstairs room where we were assembled,
9 un ragazzo chiamato Èutico, che stava seduto sulla finestra, fu preso da un sonno profondo mentre Paolo continuava a conversare e, sopraffatto dal sonno, cadde dal terzo piano e venne raccolto morto.	9 and as Paul went on and on, a young man called Eutychus who was sitting on the window-sil grewdrowsy and was overcome by sleep and fel to the ground three floors below. He was picked up dead.
10 Paolo allora scese giù, si gettò su di lui, lo abbracciò e disse: "Non vi turbate; è ancora in vita!".	10 Paul went down and stooped to clasp the boy to him, saying, 'There is no need to worry, there is stillife in him.'
11 Poi risalì, spezzò il pane e ne mangiò e dopo aver parlato ancora molto fino all'alba, partì.	11 Then he went back upstairs where he broke the bread and ate and carried on talking til he left atdaybreak.
12 Intanto avevano ricondotto il ragazzo vivo, e si sentirono molto consolati.	12 They took the boy away alive, and were greatly encouraged.
13 Noi poi, che eravamo partiti per nave, facemmo vela per Asso, dove dovevamo prendere a bordo Paolo; così infatti egli aveva deciso, intendendo di fare il viaggio a piedi.	13 We were now to go on ahead by sea, so we set sail for Assos, where we were to take Paul on board;this was what he had arranged, for he wanted to go overland.
14 Quando ci ebbe raggiunti ad Asso, lo prendemmo con noi e arrivammo a Mitilène.	14 When he rejoined us at Assos we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene.
15 Salpati da qui il giorno dopo, ci trovammo di fronte a Chio; l'indomani toccammo Samo e il giorno dopo giungemmo a Milèto.	15 The next day we sailed from there and arrived opposite Chios. The second day we touched at Samosand, after stopping at Trogyllium, made Miletus the next day.
16 Paolo aveva deciso di passare al largo di Èfeso per evitare di subire ritardi nella provincia d'Asia: gli premeva di essere a Gerusalemme, se possibile, per il giorno della Pentecoste.	16 Paul had decided to pass wide of Ephesus so as to avoid spending time in Asia, since he wasanxious to be in Jerusalem, if possible, for the day of Pentecost.
17 Da Milèto mandò a chiamare subito ad Èfeso gli anziani della Chiesa.	17 From Miletus he sent for the elders of the church of Ephesus.
18 Quando essi giunsero disse loro: "Voi sapete come mi sono comportato con voi fin dal primo giorno in cui arrivai in Asia e per tutto questo tempo:	18 When they arrived he addressed these words to them: 'You know what my way of life has been eversince the first day I set foot among you in Asia,
19 ho servito il Signore con tutta umiltà, tra le lacrime e tra le prove che mi hanno procurato le insidie dei Giudei.	19 how I have served the Lord in al humility, with al the sorrows and trials that came to me through theplots of the Jews.
20 Sapete come non mi sono mai sottratto a ciò che poteva essere utile, al fine di predicare a voi e di istruirvi in pubblico e nelle vostre case,	20 I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you; I have preached to you and instructedyou both in public and in your homes,
21 scongiurando Giudei e Greci di convertirsi a Dio e di credere nel Signore nostro Gesù.	21 urging both Jews and Greeks to turn to God and to believe in our Lord Jesus.
22 Ed ecco ora, avvinto dallo Spirito, io vado a Gerusalemme senza sapere ciò che là mi accadrà.	22 'And now you see me on my way to Jerusalem in captivity to the Spirit; I have no idea what wilhappen to me there,
23 So soltanto che lo Spirito Santo in ogni città mi attesta che mi attendono catene e tribolazioni.	23 except that the Holy Spirit, in town after town, has made it clear to me that imprisonment andpersecution await me.
24 Non ritengo tuttavia la mia vita meritevole di nulla, purché conduca a termine la mia corsa e il servizio che mi fu affidato dal Signore Gesù, di rendere testimonianza al messaggio della grazia di Dio.	24 But I do not place any value on my own life, provided that I complete the mission the Lord Jesus gaveme -- to bear witness to the good news of God's grace.
25 Ecco, ora so che non vedrete più il mio volto, voi tutti tra i quali sono passato annunziando il regno di Dio.	25 'I now feel sure that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom wil eversee my face again.
26 Per questo dichiaro solennemente oggi davanti a voi che io sono senza colpa riguardo a coloro che si perdessero,	26 And so on this very day I swear that my conscience is clear as far as all of you are concerned,
27 perché non mi sono sottratto al compito di annunziarvi tutta la volontà di Dio.	27 for I have without faltering put before you the whole of God's purpose.
28 Vegliate su voi stessi e su tutto il gregge, in mezzo al quale lo Spirito Santo vi ha posti come vescovi a pascere la Chiesa di Dio, che egli si è acquistata con il suo sangue.	28 'Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you theguardians, to feed the Church of God which he bought with the blood of his own Son.
29 Io so che dopo la mia partenza entreranno fra voi lupi rapaci, che non risparmieranno il gregge;	29 'I know quite wel that when I have gone fierce wolves wil invade you and will have no mercy on theflock.
30 perfino di mezzo a voi sorgeranno alcuni a insegnare dottrine perverse per attirare discepoli dietro di sé.	30 Even from your own ranks there wil be men coming forward with a travesty of the truth on their lips toinduce the disciples to fol ow them.
31 Per questo vigilate, ricordando che per tre anni, notte e giorno, io non ho cessato di esortare fra le lacrime ciascuno di voi.	31 So be on your guard, remembering how night and day for three years I never slackened in counsel ingeach one of you with tears.
32 Ed ora vi affido al Signore e alla parola della sua grazia che ha il potere di edificare e di concedere l'eredità con tutti i santificati.	32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace that has power to build you up and togive you your inheritance among all the sanctified.
33 Non ho desiderato né argento, né oro, né la veste di nessuno.	33 'I have never asked anyone for money or clothes;
34 Voi sapete che alle necessità mie e di quelli che erano con me hanno provveduto queste mie mani.	34 you know for yourselves that these hands of mine earned enough to meet my needs and those of mycompanions.
35 In tutte le maniere vi ho dimostrato che lavorando così si devono soccorrere i deboli, ricordandoci delle parole del Signore Gesù, che disse: Vi è più gioia nel dare che nel ricevere!".	35 By every means I have shown you that we must exert ourselves in this way to support the weak,remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, who himself said, "There is more happiness in giving than inreceiving." '
36 Detto questo, si inginocchiò con tutti loro e pregò.	36 When he had finished speaking he knelt down with them all and prayed.
37 Tutti scoppiarono in un gran pianto e gettandosi al collo di Paolo lo baciavano,	37 By now they were all in tears; they put their arms round Paul's neck and kissed him;
38 addolorati soprattutto perché aveva detto che non avrebbero più rivisto il suo volto. E lo accompagnarono fino alla nave.	38 what saddened them most was his saying they would never see his face again. Then they escortedhim to the ship.
