1 Mentre Apollo era a Corinto, Paolo, attraversate le regioni dell'altopiano, giunse a Èfeso. Qui trovò alcuni discepoli	1 Now it happened that, while Apollo was at Corinth, Paul, after he had journeyed through the upper regions, arrived at Ephesus. And he met with certain disciples.
2 e disse loro: "Avete ricevuto lo Spirito Santo quando siete venuti alla fede?". Gli risposero: "Non abbiamo nemmeno sentito dire che ci sia uno Spirito Santo".	2 And he said to them, “After believing, have you received the Holy Spirit?” But they said to him, “We have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 Ed egli disse: "Quale battesimo avete ricevuto?". "Il battesimo di Giovanni", risposero.	3 Yet truly, he said, “Then with what have you been baptized?” And they said, “With the baptism of John.”
4 Disse allora Paolo: "Giovanni ha amministrato un battesimo di penitenza, dicendo al popolo di credere in colui che sarebbe venuto dopo di lui, cioè in Gesù".	4 Then Paul said: “John baptized the people with the baptism of repentance, saying that they should believe in the One who is to come after him, that is, in Jesus.”
5 Dopo aver udito questo, si fecero battezzare nel nome del Signore Gesù	5 Upon hearing these things, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 e, non appena Paolo ebbe imposto loro le mani, scese su di loro lo Spirito Santo e parlavano in lingue e profetavano.	6 And when Paul had imposed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came over them. And they were speaking in tongues and prophesying.
7 Erano in tutto circa dodici uomini.	7 Now the men were about twelve in all.
8 Entrato poi nella sinagoga, vi poté parlare liberamente per tre mesi, discutendo e cercando di persuadere gli ascoltatori circa il regno di Dio.	8 Then, upon entering the synagogue, he was speaking faithfully for three months, disputing and persuading them about the kingdom of God.
9 Ma poiché alcuni si ostinavano e si rifiutavano di credere dicendo male in pubblico di questa nuova dottrina, si staccò da loro separando i discepoli e continuò a discutere ogni giorno nella scuola di un certo Tiranno.	9 But when certain ones became hardened and would not believe, cursing the Way of the Lord in the presence of the multitude, Paul, withdrawing from them, separated the disciples, disputing daily in a certain school of Tyrannus.
10 Questo durò due anni, col risultato che tutti gli abitanti della provincia d'Asia, Giudei e Greci, poterono ascoltare la parola del Signore.	10 Now this was done throughout two years, so that all who were living in Asia listened to the Word of the Lord, both Jews and Gentiles.
11 Dio intanto operava prodigi non comuni per opera di Paolo,	11 And God was accomplishing powerful and uncommon miracles by the hand of Paul,
12 al punto che si mettevano sopra i malati fazzoletti o grembiuli che erano stati a contatto con lui e le malattie cessavano e gli spiriti cattivi fuggivano.	12 so much so that even when small cloths and wrappings were brought from his body to the sick, the illnesses withdrew from them and the wicked spirits departed.
13 Alcuni esorcisti ambulanti giudei si provarono a invocare anch'essi il nome del Signore Gesù sopra quanti avevano spiriti cattivi, dicendo: "Vi scongiuro per quel Gesù che Paolo predica".	13 Then, even some of the traveling Jewish exorcists had attempted to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I bind you by oath through Jesus, whom Paul preaches.”
14 Facevano questo sette figli di un certo Sceva, un sommo sacerdote giudeo.	14 And there were certain Jews, the seven sons of Sceva, leaders among the priests, who were acting in this way.
15 Ma lo spirito cattivo rispose loro: "Conosco Gesù e so chi è Paolo, ma voi chi siete?".	15 But a wicked spirit responded by saying to them: “Jesus I know, and Paul I know. But who are you?”
16 E l'uomo che aveva lo spirito cattivo, slanciatosi su di loro, li afferrò e li trattò con tale violenza che essi fuggirono da quella casa nudi e coperti di ferite.	16 And the man, in whom there was a wicked spirit, leaping at them and getting the better of them both, prevailed against them, so that they fled from that house, naked and wounded.
17 Il fatto fu risaputo da tutti i Giudei e dai Greci che abitavano a Èfeso e tutti furono presi da timore e si magnificava il nome del Signore Gesù.	17 And so, this became known to all the Jews and Gentiles who were living at Ephesus. And a fear fell over them all. And the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 Molti di quelli che avevano abbracciato la fede venivano a confessare in pubblico le loro pratiche magiche	18 And many believers were arriving, confessing, and announcing their deeds.
19 e un numero considerevole di persone che avevano esercitato le arti magiche portavano i propri libri e li bruciavano alla vista di tutti. Ne fu calcolato il valore complessivo e trovarono che era di cinquantamila dramme d'argento.	19 Then many of those who had followed odd sects brought together their books, and they burned them in the sight of all. And after determining the value of these, they found the price to be fifty thousand denarii.
20 Così la parola del Signore cresceva e si rafforzava.	20 In this way, the Word of God was increasing strongly and was being confirmed.
21 Dopo questi fatti, Paolo si mise in animo di attraversare la Macedonia e l'Acaia e di recarsi a Gerusalemme dicendo: "Dopo essere stato là devo vedere anche Roma".	21 Then, when these things were completed, Paul decided in the Spirit, after crossing through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “Then, after I have been there, it is necessary for me to see Rome also.”
22 Inviati allora in Macedonia due dei suoi aiutanti, Timòteo ed Erasto, si trattenne ancora un po' di tempo nella provincia di Asia.	22 But sending two of those who were ministering to him, Timothy and Erastus, into Macedonia, he himself remained for a time in Asia.

24 Un tale, chiamato Demetrio, argentiere, che fabbricava tempietti di Artémide in argento e procurava in tal modo non poco guadagno agli artigiani,	24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith making silver shrines for Diana, was providing no small profit to craftsmen.
25 li radunò insieme agli altri che si occupavano di cose del genere e disse: "Cittadini, voi sapete che da questa industria proviene il nostro benessere;	25 And calling them together, with those who were employed in the same way, he said: “Men, you know that our income is from this craft.
26 ora potete osservare e sentire come questo Paolo ha convinto e sviato una massa di gente, non solo di Èfeso, ma si può dire di tutta l'Asia, affermando che non sono dèi quelli fabbricati da mani d'uomo.	26 And you are seeing and hearing that this man Paul, by persuasion, has turned away a great multitude, not only from Ephesus, but from nearly all of Asia, saying, ‘These things are not gods which have been made by hands.’
27 Non soltanto c'è il pericolo che la nostra categoria cada in discredito, ma anche che il santuario della grande dea Artémide non venga stimato più nulla e venga distrutta la grandezza di colei che l'Asia e il mondo intero adorano".	27 Thus, not only is this, our occupation, in danger of being brought into repudiation, but also the temple of the great Diana will be reputed as nothing! Then even her majesty, whom all of Asia and the world worships, will begin to be destroyed.”
28 All'udire ciò s'infiammarono d'ira e si misero a gridare: "Grande è l'Artémide degli Efesini!".	28 Upon hearing this, they were filled with anger, and they cried out, saying, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”
29 Tutta la città fu in subbuglio e tutti si precipitarono in massa nel teatro, trascinando con sé Gaio e Aristarco macèdoni, compagni di viaggio di Paolo.	29 And the city was filled with confusion. And having seized Gaius and Aristarchus of Macedonia, companions of Paul, they rushed violently, with one accord, into the amphitheatre.
30 Paolo voleva presentarsi alla folla, ma i discepoli non glielo permisero.	30 Then, when Paul wanted to enter to the people, the disciples would not permit him.
31 Anche alcuni dei capi della provincia, che gli erano amici, mandarono a pregarlo di non avventurarsi nel teatro.	31 And some of the leaders from Asia, who were his friends, also sent to him, requesting that he not present himself in the amphitheatre.
32 Intanto, chi gridava una cosa, chi un'altra; l'assemblea era confusa e i più non sapevano il motivo per cui erano accorsi.	32 But others were crying out various things. For the assembly was in confusion, and most did not know the reason they had been called together.
33 Alcuni della folla fecero intervenire un certo Alessandro, che i Giudei avevano spinto avanti, ed egli, fatto cenno con la mano, voleva tenere un discorso di difesa davanti al popolo.	33 So they dragged Alexander from the crowd, while the Jews were propelling him forward. And Alexander, gesturing with his hand for silence, wanted to give the people an explanation.
34 Appena s'accorsero che era Giudeo, si misero tutti a gridare in coro per quasi due ore: "Grande è l'Artémide degli Efesini!".	34 But as soon as they realized him to be a Jew, all with one voice, for about two hours, were crying out, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”
35 Alla fine il cancelliere riuscì a calmare la folla e disse: "Cittadini di Èfeso, chi fra gli uomini non sa che la città di Èfeso è custode del tempio della grande Artémide e della sua statua caduta dal cielo?	35 And when the scribe had calmed the crowds, he said: “Men of Ephesus, now what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is in the service of the great Diana and of the offspring of Jupiter?
36 Poiché questi fatti sono incontestabili, è necessario che stiate calmi e non compiate gesti inconsulti.	36 Therefore, since these things are not able to be contradicted, it is necessary for you to be calm and to do nothing rash.
37 Voi avete condotto qui questi uomini che non hanno profanato il tempio, né hanno bestemmiato la nostra dea.	37 For you have brought forward these men, who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers against your goddess.
38 Perciò se Demetrio e gli artigiani che sono con lui hanno delle ragioni da far valere contro qualcuno, ci sono per questo i tribunali e vi sono i proconsoli: si citino in giudizio l'un l'altro.	38 But if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a case against anyone, they can convene in the courts, and there are proconsuls. Let them accuse one another.
39 Se poi desiderate qualche altra cosa, si deciderà nell'assemblea ordinaria.	39 But if you would inquire about other things, this can be decided in a lawful assembly.
40 C'è il rischio di essere accusati di sedizione per l'accaduto di oggi, non essendoci alcun motivo per cui possiamo giustificare questo assembramento".	40 For now we are in peril of being convicted of sedition over today’s events, since there is no one guilty (against whom we are able to provide evidence) in this gathering.” And when he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.
41 E con queste parole sciolse l'assemblea.
