| 1 Per questo il Signore ha adempiuto le sue parole pronunziate contro di noi, contro i nostri giudici che governano Israele, contro i nostri re e contro i nostri principi, contro ogni uomo d'Israele e di Giuda. | 1 "'So the Lord confirmed his word, which he spoke against us, and against our judges who judged Israel, and against our kings and against our princes and against the men of Israel and Judah. |
| 2 Non era mai avvenuto sotto la volta del cielo quello che egli ha compiuto in Gerusalemme, come sta scritto nella legge di Mosè, | 2 Under the whole heaven there has not been done the like of what he has done in Jerusalem, in accordance with what is written in the law of Moses, |
| 3 fino al punto di mangiarsi uno le carni del figlio e un altro quelle della figlia. | 3 that we should eat, one the flesh of his son and another the flesh of his daughter. |
| 4 Il Signore li mise in potere di tutti i regni vicini e li rese oggetto di vituperio e di disprezzo per tutti quei popoli in mezzo ai quali li aveva dispersi. | 4 And he gave them into subjection to all the kingdoms around us, to be a reproach and a desolation among all the surrounding peoples, where the Lord has scattered them. |
| 5 Così ci ha reso schiavi invece di padroni, perché abbiamo offeso il Signore nostro Dio e non abbiamo ascoltato la sua voce. | 5 They were brought low and not raised up, because we sinned against the Lord our God, in not heeding his voice. |
| 6 Al Signore nostro Dio la giustizia, a noi e ai padri nostri il disonore sul volto, come avviene ancor oggi. | 6 "'Righteousness belongs to the Lord our God, but confusion of face to us and our fathers, as at this day. |
| 7 Tutte le calamità che il Signore ci aveva minacciate, ci sono venute addosso. | 7 All those calamities with which the Lord threatened us have come upon us. |
| 8 Ma noi non abbiamo placato lo sdegno del Signore, rinunziando ai perversi affetti del nostro cuore. | 8 Yet we have not entreated the favor of the Lord by turning away, each of us, from the thoughts of his wicked heart. |
| 9 Così il Signore, che è pronto al castigo, lo ha mandato sopra di noi, poiché egli è giusto in tutte le opere che ci ha comandate, | 9 And the Lord has kept the calamities ready, and the Lord has brought them upon us, for the Lord is righteous in all his works which he has commanded us to do. |
10 mentre noi non abbiamo dato ascolto alla sua voce, eseguendo i decreti che ci aveva posti davanti.
| 10 Yet we have not obeyed his voice, to walk in the statutes of the Lord which he set before us. |
| 11 Ora, Signore Dio d'Israele, che hai fatto uscire il tuo popolo dall'Egitto con mano forte, con segni e prodigi, con grande potenza e braccio possente e ti sei fatto un nome glorioso come oggi lo possiedi, | 11 "'And now, O Lord God of Israel, who didst bring thy people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and with signs and wonders and with great power and outstretched arm, and hast made thee a name, as at this day, |
| 12 noi abbiamo peccato, siamo stati empi, abbiamo trasgredito, Signore Dio nostro, i tuoi comandamenti. | 12 we have sinned, we have been ungodly, we have done wrong, O Lord our God, against all thy ordinances. |
| 13 Allontana da noi lo sdegno, poiché siamo rimasti molto pochi in mezzo alle genti fra le quali tu ci hai dispersi. | 13 Let thy anger turn away from us, for we are left, few in number, among the nations where thou hast scattered us. |
| 14 Ascolta, Signore, la nostra preghiera, la nostra supplica, liberaci per il tuo amore e facci trovar grazia davanti a coloro che ci hanno deportati, | 14 Hear, O Lord, our prayer and our supplication, and for thy own sake deliver us, and grant us favor in the sight of those who have carried us into exile; |
| 15 perché tutta la terra sappia che tu sei il Signore nostro Dio e che il tuo nome è stato invocato su Israele e su tutta la sua stirpe. | 15 that all the earth may know that thou art the Lord our God, for Israel and his descendants are called by thy name. |
| 16 Guarda, Signore, dalla tua santa dimora e pensa a noi; inclina il tuo orecchio, Signore, e ascolta; | 16 O Lord, look down from thy holy habitation, and consider us. Incline thy ear, O Lord, and hear; |
| 17 apri, Signore, gli occhi e osserva: non i morti che sono negli inferi, il cui spirito se n'è andato dalle loro viscere, danno gloria e giustizia al Signore, | 17 open thy eyes, O Lord, and see; for the dead who are in Hades, whose spirit has been taken from their bodies, will not ascribe glory or justice to the Lord, |
| 18 ma chi geme sotto il peso, chi se ne va curvo e spossato, chi ha gli occhi languenti, chi è affamato, questi sono coloro che ti rendono gloria e giustizia, Signore. | 18 but the person that is greatly distressed, that goes about bent over and feeble, and the eyes that are failing, and the person that hungers, will ascribe to thee glory and righteousness, O Lord. |
| 19 Non per i meriti dei nostri padri e dei nostri re ti presentiamo le nostre suppliche, Signore Dio nostro, | 19 For it is not because of any righteous deeds of our fathers or our kings that we bring before thee our prayer for mercy, O Lord our God. |
| 20 ma perché tu hai mandato sopra di noi la tua collera e il tuo sdegno, come avevi dichiarato per mezzo dei tuoi servi i profeti: | 20 For thou hast sent thy anger and thy wrath upon us, as thou didst declare by thy servants the prophets, saying: |
| 21 "Ecco, dice il Signore: Curvate le spalle, servite il re di Babilonia e dimorerete nella terra da me data ai vostri padri. | 21 "Thus says the Lord: Bend your shoulders and serve the king of Babylon, and you will remain in the land which I gave to your fathers. |
| 22 Ma se non darete ascolto alla voce del Signore che comanda di servire il re di Babilonia, | 22 But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord and will not serve the king of Babylon, |
| 23 farò cessare nelle città di Giuda e per le vie di Gerusalemme il grido di gioia e di letizia, il canto dello sposo e della sposa e tutto il territorio diventerà un deserto senza abitanti". | 23 I will make to cease from the cities of Judah and from the region about Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, and the whole land will be a desolation without inhabitants." |
| 24 Noi non abbiamo dato ascolto alla tua voce di servire il re di Babilonia, perciò tu hai eseguito la minaccia, fatta per mezzo dei tuoi servi i profeti, che le ossa dei nostri re e dei nostri padri sarebbero rimosse dalla loro tomba. | 24 "'But we did not obey thy voice, to serve the king of Babylon; and thou hast confirmed thy words, which thou didst speak by thy servants the prophets, that the bones of our kings and the bones of our fathers would be brought out of their graves; |
| 25 Ed eccole abbandonate al calore del giorno e al gelo della notte. Essi son morti fra atroci dolori, di fame, di spada e di peste; | 25 and behold, they have been cast out to the heat of day and the frost of night. They perished in great misery, by famine and sword and pestilence. |
| 26 il tempio che porta il tuo nome tu lo hai ridotto nello stato in cui oggi si trova, per la malvagità della casa d'Israele e di Giuda. | 26 And the house which is called by thy name thou hast made as it is today, because of the wickedness of the house of Israel and the house of Judah. |
| 27 Tuttavia tu hai agito verso di noi, Signore Dio nostro, secondo tutta la tua bontà e secondo tutta la tua grande misericordia, | 27 "'Yet thou hast dealt with us, O Lord our God, in all thy kindness and in all thy great compassion, |
| 28 come avevi detto per mezzo del tuo servo Mosè, quando gli ordinasti di scrivere la tua legge davanti agli Israeliti, dicendo: | 28 as thou didst speak by thy servant Moses on the day when thou didst command him to write thy law in the presence of the people of Israel, saying, |
| 29 "Se voi non darete ascolto alla mia voce, questa moltitudine che ora è così grande sarà ridotta a un piccolo resto in mezzo alle nazioni fra le quali io la disperderò; | 29 "If you will not obey my voice, this very great multitude will surely turn into a small number among the nations, where I will scatter them. |
| 30 poiché io so che non mi ascolterà, perché è un popolo di dura cervice. Però nella terra del loro esilio ritorneranno in sé | 30 For I know that they will not obey me, for they are a stiff-necked people. But in the land of their exile they will come to themselves, |
| 31 e riconosceranno che io sono il Signore loro Dio. Darò loro un cuore e orecchi che ascoltano; | 31 and they will know that I am the Lord their God. I will give them a heart that obeys and ears that hear; |
| 32 nella terra del loro esilio mi loderanno e si ricorderanno del mio nome | 32 and they will praise me in the land of their exile, and will remember my name, |
| 33 e ripensando alla sorte subìta dai loro padri che peccarono contro di me, abbandoneranno la loro caparbietà e la loro malizia. | 33 and will turn from their stubbornness and their wicked deeds; for they will remember the ways of their fathers, who sinned before the Lord. |
| 34 Io li ricondurrò nella terra promessa con giuramento ai loro padri, ad Abramo, a Isacco, a Giacobbe; essi ne avranno di nuovo il dominio e io li moltiplicherò e non diminuiranno più; | 34 I will bring them again into the land which I swore to give to their fathers, to Abraham and to Isaac and to Jacob, and they will rule over it; and I will increase them, and they will not be diminished. |
| 35 farò con loro un'alleanza perenne: io sarò Dio per loro ed essi saranno popolo per me, né scaccerò mai più il mio popolo Israele dal paese che gli ho dato". | 35 I will make an everlasting covenant with them to be their God and they shall be my people; and I will never again remove my people Israel from the land which I have given them." |
