1 Il suddetto Simone, che si era fatto delatore dei beni e della patria, diffamava Onia, come se avesse percosso Eliodòro e fosse stato l'organizzatore dei disordini;	1 But Simon, of whom we spoke before, and of his country, spoke ill of Onias, as though he had incited Heliodorus to do these things, and had been the promoter of evils:
2 osava definire nemico della cosa pubblica il benefattore della città, il protettore dei cittadini, il difensore delle leggi.	2 And he presumed to call him a traitor to the kingdom, who provided for the city, and defended his nation, and wed zealous for the law of God.
3 L'odio era giunto a tal punto che si compirono delle uccisioni da parte di uno dei gregari di Simone;	3 But when the enmities proceeded so far, that murders also were committed by some of Simon's friends:
4 allora Onia, vedendo l'aggravarsi dell'invidia e accorgendosi che Apollonio figlio di Menèsteo, stratega della Celesira e della Fenicia, aizzava la perfidia di Simone,	4 Onias considering the danger of this contention, and that Apollonius, who was the governor of Celesyria and Phenicia, was outrageous, which increased the malice of Simon, went to the king,
5 si recò dal re, non per far la parte di accusatore dei suoi concittadini, ma per provvedere al bene comune del popolo e di ciascuno in particolare.	5 Not to be an accuser of his countrymen, but with a view to the common good of all the people.
6 Vedeva infatti che senza un provvedimento del re era impossibile ristabilire la pace nella vita pubblica e che Simone non avrebbe messo freno alla sua pazzia.	6 For he saw that, except the king took care, it was impossible that matters should be settled in peace, or that Simon would cease from his folly.
7 Ma, Selèuco essendo passato all'altra vita e avendo preso le redini del governo Antioco chiamato anche Epìfane, Giàsone, fratello di Onia, volle procurarsi con la corruzione il sommo sacerdozio	7 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, who was called the Illustrious, had taken possession of the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias ambitiously sought the high priesthood:
8 e, in un incontro con il re, gli promise trecentosessanta talenti d'argento e altri ottanta talenti riscossi con un'altra entrata.	8 And went to the king, promising him three hundred and sixty talents of silver, and out of other revenues fourscore talents.
9 Oltre a questi prometteva di versargli altri centocinquanta talenti, se gli fosse stato concesso di stabilire di sua autorità una palestra e un campo d'addestramento e di erigere una corporazione d'Antiocheni a Gerusalemme.	9 Besides this he promised also a hundred and fifty more, if he might have license to set him up a place for exercise, and a place for youth, and to entitle them, that were at Jerusalem, Antiochians.
10 Avendo il re acconsentito, egli, ottenuto il potere, si diede subito a trasformare i suoi connazionali secondo i costumi greci,	10 Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten the rule into his hands, forthwith he began to bring over his countrymen to the fashion of the heathens.
11 annullando i favori concessi dal re ai Giudei, ad opera di Giovanni, padre di quell'Eupolemo che aveva guidato l'ambasciata presso i Romani per negoziare il patto d'amicizia e di alleanza, e sradicando le leggi cittadine inaugurò usanze perverse.	11 And abolishing those things, which had been decreed of special favour by the kings in behalf of the Jews, by the means of John the father of that Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome to make amity and alliance, he disannulled the lawful ordinances of the citizens, and brought in fashions that were perverse.
12 Fu subito zelante nel costruire una palestra, proprio ai piedi dell'acròpoli, e nell'indurre i giovani più distinti a portare il pètaso.	12 For he had the boldness to set up, U under the very castle, a place of exercise, and to put all the choicest youths in brothel houses.
13 Così era raggiunto il colmo dell'ellenizzazione e la diserzione verso i costumi stranieri per l'eccessiva corruzione dell'empio e falso sommo sacerdote Giàsone.	13 Now this was not the beginning, but an increase, and progress of heathenish and foreign manners, through the abominable and unheard of wickedness of Jason, that impious wretch and no priest.
14 Perciò i sacerdoti non erano più premurosi del servizio all'altare, ma, disprezzando il tempio e trascurando i sacrifici, si affrettarono a partecipare agli spettacoli contrari alla legge nella palestra, appena dato il segnale del lancio del disco.	14 Insomuch that the priests were not now occupied about the offices of the altar, but despising the temple and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the games, and of the unlawful allowance thereof, and of the exercise of the discus.
15 Così tenendo in poco conto le glorie patrie stimavano nobilissime le glorie elleniche.	15 And setting nought by the honours of their fathers, they esteemed the Grecian glories for the best:
16 Ma appunto a causa di queste li sorprese una grave situazione e si ebbero quali avversari e punitori proprio coloro le cui istituzioni seguivano con zelo e a cui cercavano di rassomigliare in tutto.	16 For the sake of which they incurred a dangerous contention, and followed earnestly their ordinances, and in all things they coveted to be like them, who were their enemies and murderers.
17 Non è cosa che resti impunita il comportarsi empiamente contro le leggi divine, come dimostrerà chiaramente il successivo periodo di tempo.	17 For acting wickedly against the laws of God doth not pass unpunished: but this the time following will declare.
18 Celebrandosi in Tiro i giochi quinquennali con l'intervento del re,	18 Now when the game that was used every fifth year was kept at Tyre, the king being present,
19 l'empio Giàsone inviò come rappresentanti alcuni Antiocheni di Gerusalemme, i quali portavano con sé trecento dramme d'argento per il sacrifico a Ercole; ma questi portatori ritennero non conveniente usarle per il sacrifico, bensì impiegarle per altra spesa.	19 The wicked Jason sent from Jerusalem sinful men to carry three hundred didrachmas of silver for the sacrifice of Hercules; but the bearers thereof desired it might not be bestowed on the sacrifices, because it was not necessary, but might be deputed for other charges.
20 Così il denaro destinato al sacrificio a Ercole da parte del mandante, servì, grazie ai portatori, per la costruzione delle triremi.	20 So the money was appointed by him that sent it to the sacrifice of Hercules: but because of them that carried it was employed for the making of galleys.
21 Antioco, avendo mandato Apollonio, figlio di Menèsteo, in Egitto per l'intronizzazione del re Filomètore, venne a sapere che costui era diventato contrario al suo governo e quindi si preoccupò della sua sicurezza. Perciò si recò a Giaffa, poi mosse alla volta di Gerusalemme.	21 Now when Apollonius the son of Mnestheus was sent into Egypt to treat with the nobles of king Philometor, and Antiochus understood that he was wholly excluded from the affairs of the kingdom, consulting his own interest, he departed thence and came to Joppe, and from thence to Jerusalem:
22 Fu accolto da Giàsone e dalla città con dimostrazioni magnifiche e introdotto con corteo di fiaccole e acclamazioni. Così riprese la marcia militare verso la Fenicia.	22 Where he was received in a, magnificent manner by Jason, and the city, and came in with torch lights, and with praises, end from thence he returned with his army into Phenicia.
23 Tre anni dopo, Giàsone mandò Menelao, fratello del già menzionato Simone, a portare al re denaro e a presentargli un memoriale su alcuni affari importanti.	23 Three years afterwards Jason sent Menelaus, brother of the aforesaid Simon, to carry money to the king, and to bring answers from him concerning certain necessary affairs.
24 Ma quello, fattosi presentare al re e avendolo ossequiato con un portamento da persona autorevole, si accaparrò il sommo sacerdozio, superando l'offerta di Giàsone di trecento talenti d'argento.	24 But he being recommended to the king, when he had magnified the appearance of his power, got the high priesthood for himself, by offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver.
25 Munito delle disposizioni del re, si presentò di ritorno, non avendo con sé nulla che fosse degno del sommo sacerdozio, ma avendo le manie di un tiranno unite alla ferocia di una belva.	25 So having received the king's mandate, he returned bringing nothing worthy of the high priesthood: but having the mind of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast.
26 Così Giàsone, che aveva tradito il proprio fratello, fu tradito a sua volta da un altro e fu costretto a fuggire nel paese dell'Ammanìtide.	26 Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being himself undermined, was driven out a fugitive into the country of the Ammonites
27 Menelato si impadronì del potere, ma non s'interessò più del denaro promesso al re,	27 So Menelaus got the principality: but as for the money he had promised to the king he took no care, when Sostratus the governor of the castle called for
28 sebbene gliele avesse fatto richiesta Sòstrato, comandante dell'acròpoli; questi infatti aveva l'incarico della riscossione dei tributi. Per questo motivo tutti e due furono convocati dal re.	28 For to him appertained the gathering of the taxes: wherefore they were both called before the king.
29 Menelao lasciò come sostituto nel sommo sacerdozio Lisìmaco suo fratello; Sòstrato lasciò Cratéte, comandante dei Ciprioti.	29 And Menelaus was removed from the priesthood, Lysimachus his brother succeeding: and Sostratus was made governor of the Cyprians.
30 Mentre così stavano le cose, le città di Tarso e Mallo si ribellarono, perché erano state date in dono ad Antiòchide, concubina del re.	30 When these things were in doing, it fell out that they of Tharsus and Mallos raised a sedition, because they were given for a gift to Antiochis, the king's concubine.
31 Il re partì in fretta per riportare all'ordine la situazione, lasciando come luogotenente Andronìco, uno dei suoi dignitari.	31 The king therefore went in all haste to appease them, leaving Andronicus, one of his nobles, for his deputy.
32 Menelao allora, pensando di aver trovato l'occasione buona, sottrasse alcuni arredi d'oro del tempio e ne fece omaggio ad Andronìco; altri poi si trovò che li aveva venduti a Tiro e nelle città vicine.	32 Then Menelaus supposing that he had found a convenient time, having stolen certain vessels of gold out of the temple, gave them to Andronicus, and others he had sold at Tyre, and in the neighbouring cities.
33 Ma Onia lo biasimò, dopo essersi accertato della cosa ed essersi rifugiato in località inviolabile a Dafne situata presso Antiochia.	33 Which when Onias understood most certainly, he reproved him, keeping himself in a safe place at Antioch beside Daphne.
34 Per questo Menelao, incontratosi in segreto con Andronìco, lo pregò di sopprimere Onia. Quegli, recatosi da Onia e ottenutane con inganno la fiducia, dandogli la destra con giuramento lo persuase, sebbene ancora guardato con sospetto, ad uscire dall'asilo e subito lo uccise senza alcun riguardo alla giustizia.	34 Whereupon Menelaus coming to Andronicus, desired him to kill Onias. And he went to Onias, and gave him his right hand with an oath, and (though he were suspected by him) persuaded him to come forth out of the sanctuary, and immediately slew him, without any regard to justice.
35 Per questo fatto non solo i Giudei, ma anche molti altri popoli si mossero a sdegno e tristezza per l'empia uccisione di tanto uomo.	35 For which cause not only the Jews, but also the other nations, conceived indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of so great a man.
36 Quando il re tornò dalle località della Cilicia, si presentarono a lui i Giudei della città insieme con i Greci che condividevano l'esecrazione dell'uccisione di Onia contro ogni diritto.	36 And when the king was come back from the places of Cilicia, the Jews that were at Antioch, and also the Creaks went to him: complaining of the unjust murder of Onias.
37 Antioco fu intimamente rattristato, colpito da cordoglio e mosso a lacrime per la saggezza e la grande prudenza del defunto;	37 Antiochus therefore was grieved in his mind for Onias, and being moved to pity, shed tears, remembering the sobriety and modesty of the deceased.
38 subito, acceso di sdegno, tolse la porpora ad Andronìco, ne stracciò le vesti e lo trascinò attraverso tutta la città fino al luogo stesso dove egli aveva sacrilegamente ucciso Onia e là cancellò dal mondo l'assassino. Così il Signore gli rese il meritato castigo.	38 And being inflamed to anger, he commanded Andronicus to be stripped of his purple, and to be led about through all the city: and that in the same place wherein he had committed the impiety against Onias, the sacrilegious wretch should be put to death, the Lord repaying him his deserved punishment.
39 Essendo poi avvenuti molti furti sacrileghi in città da parte di Lisìmaco su istigazione di Menelao ed essendosene sparsa la voce al di fuori, il popolo si ribellò a Lisìmaco, quando già molti arredi d'oro erano stati portati via.	39 Now when many sacrileges had been committed by Lysimachus in the temple by the counsel of Menelaus, and the rumour of it was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, a great quantity of gold being already carried away.
40 La folla era eccitata e piena di furore e Lisìmaco, armati circa tremila uomini, diede inizio ad atti di violenza, mettendo come comandante un certo Aurano già avanzato in età e non meno in stoltezza.	40 Wherefore the multitude making an insurrection, and their minds being filled with anger, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began to use violence, one Tyrannus being captain, a man far gone both in age, and in madness.
41 Ma quelli, appena si accorsero dell'aggressione di Lisìmaco, afferrarono chi pietre, chi grossi bastoni, altri raccolsero a manciate la polvere sul posto e si gettarono contro coloro che stavano attorno a Lisìmaco.	41 But when they perceived the attempt of Lysimachus, some caught up stones, some strong clubs: and some threw ashes upon Lysimachus,
42 A questo modo ne ferirono molti, alcuni ne stesero morti, costrinsero tutti alla fuga, misero a morte lo stesso saccheggiatore del tempio presso la camera del tesoro.	42 And many of them were wounded, and some struck down to the ground, but all were put to flight: and as for the sacrilegious fellow himself, they slew him beside the treasury.
43 Per questi fatti fu intentato un processo contro Menelao.	43 Now concerning these matters, an accusation was laid against Menelaus.
44 Venuto il re a Tiro, i tre uomini mandati dal consiglio degli anziani difesero presso di lui il loro diritto.	44 And when the king was come to Tyre, three men were sent from the ancients to plead the cause before him.
45 Menelao, ormai sul punto di essere abbandonato, promise una buona quantità di denaro a Tolomeo, figlio di Dorìmene, perché traesse il re dalla sua parte.	45 But Menelaus being convicted, promised Ptolemee to give him much money to persuade the king to favour him.
46 Tolomeo invitò il re sotto un portico, come per prendere il fresco, e gli fece mutar parere.	46 So Ptolemee went to the king in a certain court where he was, as it were to cool himself, and brought him to be of another mind:
47 Così il re prosciolse dalle accuse Menelao, causa di tutto il male, e a quegli infelici che, se avessero discusso la causa anche presso gli Sciti, sarebbero stati prosciolti come innocenti, decretò la pena di morte.	47 So Menelaus who was guilty of all the evil, was acquitted by him of the accusations: and those poor men, who, if they had pleaded their cause even before Scythians, should have been judged innocent, were condemned to death.
48 Così senza dilazione subirono l'ingiusta pena coloro che avevano difeso la città, il popolo e gli arredi sacri.	48 Thus they that prosecuted the cause for the city, and for the people, and the sacred vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment.
49 Gli stessi cittadini di Tiro, indignati per questo fatto, provvidero generosamente quanto occorreva per la loro sepoltura.	49 Wherefore even the Tyrians being moved with indignation, were liberal towards their burial.
50 Menelao invece, per la cupidigia dei potenti, rimase al potere, crescendo in malvagità e facendosi grande traditore dei concittadini.	50 And so through the covetousness of them that were in power, Menelaus continued in authority, increasing in malice to the betraying of the citizens.
