1 Simone seppe che Trifone stava radunando un numeroso esercito per venire in Giudea a schiacciarla;	1 Simon heard that Trypho had col ected a large army to invade and devastate Judaea,
2 vide che il popolo era tremante e impaurito, andò a Gerusalemme e radunò il popolo;	2 and when he saw how the people were quaking with fear, he went up to Jerusalem, cal ed the peopletogether,
3 li confortò e disse loro: "Voi sapete bene quanto io e i miei fratelli e la casa di mio padre abbiamo fatto per le leggi e per il santuario e le guerre e le difficoltà che abbiamo sostenute.	3 and exhorted them thus, 'You know yourselves how much I and my brothers and my father's familyhave done for the laws and the sanctuary; you know what wars and hardships we have experienced.
4 Per questa causa sono morti i miei fratelli, tutti per la causa di Israele, e sono restato io solo.	4 That is why my brothers are all dead, for Israel's sake, and I am the only one left.
5 Ebbene, mai risparmierò la vita di fronte a qualunque tribolazione: perché io non sono più importante dei miei fratelli.	5 Far be it from me, then, to be sparing of my own life in any time of oppression, for I am not worth morethan my brothers.
6 Anzi io difenderò il mio popolo e il santuario e le vostre mogli e i figli vostri, poiché si sono radunati tutti i pagani per sterminarci, spinti dall'odio".	6 Rather wil I avenge my nation and the sanctuary and your wives and children, now that the foreignersare al united in malice to destroy us.'
7 Lo spirito del popolo si infiammò all'udire queste parole;	7 The people's spirit rekindled as they listened to his words,
8 perciò risposero gridando a gran voce: "Tu sei il nostro condottiero al posto di Giuda e di Giònata tuo fratello;	8 and they shouted back at him, 'You are our leader in place of Judas and your brother Jonathan.
9 combatti la nostra guerra e quanto ci comanderai noi faremo".	9 Fight our battles for us, and we wil do whatever you tel us.'
10 Egli allora radunò tutti gli uomini atti alle armi e accelerò il completamento delle mura di Gerusalemme e le fortificò tutt'attorno.	10 So he assembled al the fighting men and hurried on with completing the wal s of Jerusalem,fortifying the whole perimeter.
11 Poi inviò Giònata figlio di Assalonne con un forte esercito a Giaffa; egli ne scacciò gli occupanti e rimase là sul posto.	11 He sent a considerable force to Joppa under Jonathan son of Absalom who drove out the inhabitantsand remained there in occupation.
12 Intanto Trifone si mosse da Tolemàide con ingenti forze per venire in Giudea e aveva con sé Giònata come prigioniero.	12 Trypho now left Ptolemais with a large army to invade Judaea, taking Jonathan with him underguard.
13 Simone a sua volta si accampò in Adida di fronte alla pianura.	13 Simon pitched camp in Adida, facing the plain.
14 Trifone venne a sapere che Simone era succeduto a Giònata suo fratello e che si accingeva a muovergli guerra, perciò mandò messaggeri a proporgli:	14 When Trypho learned that Simon had taken the place of his brother Jonathan and that he intendedto join battle with him, he sent envoys to him with this message,
15 "Giònata tuo fratello lo tratteniamo a causa del denaro che doveva all'erario del re per gli affari che amministrava.	15 'Your brother Jonathan was in debt to the royal exchequer for the offices he held; that is why we aredetaining him.
16 Ora, mandaci cento talenti d'argento e due dei suoi figli in ostaggio, perché una volta liberato non si allontani per ribellarsi a noi. Con questo lo rimetteremo in libertà".	16 If you send a hundred talents of silver and two of his sons as hostages, to make sure that on hisrelease he does not revolt against us, we shal release him.'
17 Simone si rese conto che gli parlavano con inganno, ma mandò ugualmente a prendere l'argento e i figli, per non attirarsi forte inimicizia da parte del popolo,	17 Although Simon was aware that the message was a ruse, he sent for the money and the boys forfear of incurring great hostility from the people,
18 che poteva commentare: "È perito perché non gli hai mandato l'argento né i figli".	18 who would have said that Jonathan had died because Simon would not send Trypho the money andthe children.
19 Perciò gli mandò i cento talenti e i figli; ma quegli non mantenne la parola e non liberò Giònata.	19 He therefore sent both the boys and the hundred talents, but Trypho broke his word and did notrelease Jonathan.
20 Fatto questo, Trifone si mosse per entrare nel paese e devastarlo, girando per la via che conduce ad Adòra. Ma Simone con le sue truppe ne seguiva le mosse puntando su tutti i luoghi dove quegli si dirigeva.	20 Next, Trypho set about the invasion and devastation of the country; he made a detour along theAdora road, but Simon and his army confronted him wherever he attempted to go.
21 Quelli dell'Acra intanto inviarono messaggeri a Trifone sollecitandolo a venire da loro attraverso il deserto e a inviare loro vettovaglie.	21 The men in the Citadel kept sending messengers to Trypho, urging him to get through to them byway of the desert and send them supplies.
22 Trifone allestì tutta la sua cavalleria per andare, ma in quella notte cadde neve abbondantissima, e così a causa della neve non poté andare. Perciò si mosse e andò in Gàlaad.	22 Trypho organised his entire cavalry to go, but that night it snowed so heavily that he could not getthrough for the snow, so he left there and moved off into Gilead.
23 Quando fu vicino a Bascama, uccise Giònata e lo seppellì sul posto.	23 As he approached Baskama he kil ed Jonathan, who was buried there.
24 Poi tornò e partì per la sua regione.	24 Trypho turned back and regained his own country.
25 Simone mandò a prendere le ossa di Giònata suo fratello e lo seppellì in Modin, città dei suoi padri.	25 Simon sent and recovered the bones of his brother Jonathan, and buried him in Modein, the town ofhis ancestors.
26 Tutto Israele lo pianse con un grande lamento e fece lutto su di lui per molti giorni.	26 Al Israel kept solemn mourning for him and long bewailed him.
27 Simone sopraelevò il sepolcro del padre e dei fratelli e lo pose bene in vista con pietre levigate, dietro e davanti.	27 Over the tomb of his father and brothers, Simon raised a monument high enough to catch the eye,using dressed stone back and front.
28 Poi dispose sette piramidi, l'una di fronte all'altra, per il padre, per la madre e per i quattro fratelli.	28 He erected seven pyramids facing each other, for his father and mother and his four brothers,
29 Le completò con una struttura architettonica, ponendovi attorno grandi colonne; pose sulle colonne trofei di armi a perenne memoria e presso i trofei navi scolpite che si potessero osservare da quanti erano in navigazione sul mare.	29 surrounding them with a structure consisting of tal columns surmounted by trophies of arms to theireverlasting memory and, beside the trophies of arms, ships sculpted on a scale to be seen by al who sail thesea.
30 Tale è il mausoleo che eresse in Modin e che esiste ancora.	30 Such was the monument he constructed at Modein, and it is stil there today.
31 Trifone agiva con perfidia verso Antioco, il re ancora giovinetto, finché lo uccise	31 Now Trypho, betraying the trust of young King Antiochus, put him to death.
32 e si fece re al suo posto, si mise in capo la corona dell'Asia e procurò grandi rovine al paese.	32 He usurped his throne, assuming the crown of Asia, and brought great havoc on the country.
33 Simone intanto completò le fortezze della Giudea, le cinse di torri elevate e di mura solide con portoni e sbarre e rifornì le fortezze di viveri.	33 Simon built up the fortresses of Judaea, surrounding them with high towers, great wal s and gateswith bolts, and stocked these fortresses with food.
34 Poi Simone scelse uomini adatti e li inviò al re Demetrio per ottenere esoneri al paese; perché tutti gli atti di Trifone erano state rapine.	34 He also sent a delegation to King Demetrius, to get him to grant the province a remission, since alTrypho did was to despoil.
35 Il re Demetrio lo assicurò in questo senso, poi gli rispose per iscritto inviandogli la seguente lettera:	35 King Demetrius replied to his request in a letter framed as fol ows:
36 "Il re Demetrio a Simone sommo sacerdote e amico del re, agli anziani e al popolo dei Giudei salute.	36 'King Demetrius to Simon, high priest and Friend of Kings, and to the elders and nation of the Jews,greetings.
37 Abbiamo ricevuto la corona d'oro e la palma che ci avete inviata e siamo pronti a concludere con voi una pace solenne e a scrivere ai sovrintendenti agli affari di concedervi le esenzioni;	37 'It has pleased us to accept the golden crown and the palm you have sent us, and we are disposedto make a general peace with you, and to write to the officials to grant you remissions.
38 quanto stabilimmo con voi resta stabilito e le fortezze che avete costruite restino di vostra proprietà.	38 Everything that we have decreed concerning you remains in force, and the fortresses you have builtmay remain in your hands.
39 Vi condoniamo le mancanze e le colpe fino ad oggi e la corona che ci dovete; se altro si riscuoteva in Gerusalemme, non sia più riscosso.	39 We pardon all offences, unwitting or intentional, hitherto committed, and remit the crown tax you nowowe us; and whatever other taxes were levied in Jerusalem are no longer to be levied.
40 Se alcuni di voi sono atti ad essere iscritti al seguito della nostra persona, siano iscritti e regni la pace tra di noi".	40 If any of you are suitable for enrolment in our bodyguard, let them be enrol ed, and let there bepeace between us.'
41 Nell'anno centosettanta fu tolto il giogo dei pagani da Israele	41 The gentile yoke was thus lifted from Israel in the year 170,
42 e il popolo cominciò a scrivere negli atti pubblici e nei contratti: "Anno primo di Simone il grande, sommo sacerdote, stratega e capo dei Giudei".	42 when our people began engrossing their documents and contracts: 'In the first year of Simon,eminent high priest, commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews'.
43 In quel tempo Simone pose il campo contro Ghezer, la circondò di accampamenti, fece allestire una torre mobile, la spinse contro la città e abbatté una torre impadronendosene.	43 About that time Simon laid siege to Gezer, surrounding it with his troops. He constructed a mobiletower, brought it up to the city, opened a breach in one of the bastions and took it.
44 I soldati della torre mobile si lanciarono nella città e si produsse in città un grande trambusto.	44 The men in the mobile tower sprang out into the city, where great confusion ensued.
45 I cittadini salirono sulle mura insieme con le mogli e i bambini, con le vesti stracciate, e supplicarono a gran voce per indurre Simone a dar loro la destra	45 The citizens, accompanied by their wives and children, mounted the ramparts with their garmentstorn and loudly implored Simon to make peace with them:
46 e dissero: "Non trattarci secondo le nostre iniquità, ma secondo la tua clemenza".	46 'Treat us', they said, 'not as our wickedness deserves, but as your mercy prompts you.'
47 Simone venne a patti con loro e non combatté oltre contro di loro; ma li scacciò dalla città, purificò le case nelle quali c'erano idoli, e così entrò in città con canti di lode e di ringraziamento.	47 Simon came to terms with them and stopped the fighting; but he expel ed them from the city, purifiedthe houses which contained idols, and then made his entry with songs of praise.
48 Egli eliminò da essa ogni contaminazione e vi stabilì uomini che fossero osservanti della legge; poi la fortificò e costruì in essa la propria dimora.	48 He banished al impurity from it, settled in it people who observed the Law, and having fortified it,built a residence there for himself.
49 Ora quelli dell'Acra in Gerusalemme, messi nell'impossibilità di uscire e venire nel paese a comprare e vendere, erano terribilmente affamati e buon numero di essi moriva di fame.	49 The occupants of the Citadel in Jerusalem, prevented as they were from coming out and going intothe countryside to buy and sel , were in desperate need of food, and numbers of them were being carried off bystarvation.
50 Allora fecero giungere il loro grido a Simone, perché desse loro la destra, e Simone la diede; così li sloggiò di là e purificò l'Acra da tutte le contaminazioni.	50 They begged Simon to make peace with them, and he granted this, though he expel ed them andpurified the Citadel from its pollutions.
51 Fecero ingresso in quel luogo il ventitré del secondo mese dell'anno centosettantuno, con canti di lode e con palme, con suoni di cetre, cembali e arpe e con inni e canti, perché era stato eliminato un grande nemico da Israele.	51 The Jews made their entry on the twenty-third day of the second month in the year 171, withacclamations and carrying palms, to the sound of lyres, cymbals and harps, chanting hymns and canticles, sincea great enemy had been crushed and thrown out of Israel. Simon made it a day of annual rejoicing.
52 Simone stabilì di celebrare ogni anno questo giorno di festa. Intanto completò la fortificazione del monte del tempio lungo l'Acra; qui abitò con i suoi.	52 He fortified the Temple hil on the Citadel side, and took up residence there with his men.
53 Vedendo poi che suo figlio Giovanni era ormai uomo, Simone lo fece capo di tutte le milizie e questi pose la sua residenza in Ghezer.	53 Since his son John had come to manhood, Simon appointed him general-in-chief, with his residencein Gezer.
