1 Simone seppe che Trifone stava radunando un numeroso esercito per venire in Giudea a schiacciarla;	1 Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it,
2 vide che il popolo era tremante e impaurito, andò a Gerusalemme e radunò il popolo;	2 And saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together,
3 li confortò e disse loro: "Voi sapete bene quanto io e i miei fratelli e la casa di mio padre abbiamo fatto per le leggi e per il santuario e le guerre e le difficoltà che abbiamo sostenute.	3 And gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen.
4 Per questa causa sono morti i miei fratelli, tutti per la causa di Israele, e sono restato io solo.	4 By reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.
5 Ebbene, mai risparmierò la vita di fronte a qualunque tribolazione: perché io non sono più importante dei miei fratelli.	5 Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren.
6 Anzi io difenderò il mio popolo e il santuario e le vostre mogli e i figli vostri, poiché si sono radunati tutti i pagani per sterminarci, spinti dall'odio".	6 Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice.
7 Lo spirito del popolo si infiammò all'udire queste parole;	7 Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived.
8 perciò risposero gridando a gran voce: "Tu sei il nostro condottiero al posto di Giuda e di Giònata tuo fratello;	8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother.
9 combatti la nostra guerra e quanto ci comanderai noi faremo".	9 Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever, thou commandest us, that will we do.
10 Egli allora radunò tutti gli uomini atti alle armi e accelerò il completamento delle mura di Gerusalemme e le fortificò tutt'attorno.	10 So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.
11 Poi inviò Giònata figlio di Assalonne con un forte esercito a Giaffa; egli ne scacciò gli occupanti e rimase là sul posto.	11 Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absolom, and with him a great power, to Joppa: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it.
12 Intanto Trifone si mosse da Tolemàide con ingenti forze per venire in Giudea e aveva con sé Giònata come prigioniero.	12 So Tryphon removed from Ptolemaus with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward.
13 Simone a sua volta si accampò in Adida di fronte alla pianura.	13 But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain.
14 Trifone venne a sapere che Simone era succeduto a Giònata suo fratello e che si accingeva a muovergli guerra, perciò mandò messaggeri a proporgli:	14 Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying,
15 "Giònata tuo fratello lo tratteniamo a causa del denaro che doveva all'erario del re per gli affari che amministrava.	15 Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king's treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him.
16 Ora, mandaci cento talenti d'argento e due dei suoi figli in ostaggio, perché una volta liberato non si allontani per ribellarsi a noi. Con questo lo rimetteremo in libertà".	16 Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go.
17 Simone si rese conto che gli parlavano con inganno, ma mandò ugualmente a prendere l'argento e i figli, per non attirarsi forte inimicizia da parte del popolo,	17 Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people:
18 che poteva commentare: "È perito perché non gli hai mandato l'argento né i figli".	18 Who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead.
19 Perciò gli mandò i cento talenti e i figli; ma quegli non mantenne la parola e non liberò Giònata.	19 So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled neither would he let Jonathan go.
20 Fatto questo, Trifone si mosse per entrare nel paese e devastarlo, girando per la via che conduce ad Adòra. Ma Simone con le sue truppe ne seguiva le mosse puntando su tutti i luoghi dove quegli si dirigeva.	20 And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went.
21 Quelli dell'Acra intanto inviarono messaggeri a Trifone sollecitandolo a venire da loro attraverso il deserto e a inviare loro vettovaglie.	21 Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals.
22 Trifone allestì tutta la sua cavalleria per andare, ma in quella notte cadde neve abbondantissima, e così a causa della neve non poté andare. Perciò si mosse e andò in Gàlaad.	22 Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad.
23 Quando fu vicino a Bascama, uccise Giònata e lo seppellì sul posto.	23 And when he came near to Bascama he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.
24 Poi tornò e partì per la sua regione.	24 Afterward Tryphon returned and went into his own land.
25 Simone mandò a prendere le ossa di Giònata suo fratello e lo seppellì in Modin, città dei suoi padri.	25 Then sent Simon, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.
26 Tutto Israele lo pianse con un grande lamento e fece lutto su di lui per molti giorni.	26 And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days.
27 Simone sopraelevò il sepolcro del padre e dei fratelli e lo pose bene in vista con pietre levigate, dietro e davanti.	27 Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before.
28 Poi dispose sette piramidi, l'una di fronte all'altra, per il padre, per la madre e per i quattro fratelli.	28 Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren.
29 Le completò con una struttura architettonica, ponendovi attorno grandi colonne; pose sulle colonne trofei di armi a perenne memoria e presso i trofei navi scolpite che si potessero osservare da quanti erano in navigazione sul mare.	29 And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea.
30 Tale è il mausoleo che eresse in Modin e che esiste ancora.	30 This is the sepulchre which he made at Modin, and it standeth yet unto this day.
31 Trifone agiva con perfidia verso Antioco, il re ancora giovinetto, finché lo uccise	31 Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him.
32 e si fece re al suo posto, si mise in capo la corona dell'Asia e procurò grandi rovine al paese.	32 And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land.
33 Simone intanto completò le fortezze della Giudea, le cinse di torri elevate e di mura solide con portoni e sbarre e rifornì le fortezze di viveri.	33 Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein.
34 Poi Simone scelse uomini adatti e li inviò al re Demetrio per ottenere esoneri al paese; perché tutti gli atti di Trifone erano state rapine.	34 Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil.
35 Il re Demetrio lo assicurò in questo senso, poi gli rispose per iscritto inviandogli la seguente lettera:	35 Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner:
36 "Il re Demetrio a Simone sommo sacerdote e amico del re, agli anziani e al popolo dei Giudei salute.	36 King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:
37 Abbiamo ricevuto la corona d'oro e la palma che ci avete inviata e siamo pronti a concludere con voi una pace solenne e a scrivere ai sovrintendenti agli affari di concedervi le esenzioni;	37 The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted.
38 quanto stabilimmo con voi resta stabilito e le fortezze che avete costruite restino di vostra proprietà.	38 And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own.
39 Vi condoniamo le mancanze e le colpe fino ad oggi e la corona che ci dovete; se altro si riscuoteva in Gerusalemme, non sia più riscosso.	39 As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid.
40 Se alcuni di voi sono atti ad essere iscritti al seguito della nostra persona, siano iscritti e regni la pace tra di noi".	40 And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let then be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us.
41 Nell'anno centosettanta fu tolto il giogo dei pagani da Israele	41 Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year.
42 e il popolo cominciò a scrivere negli atti pubblici e nei contratti: "Anno primo di Simone il grande, sommo sacerdote, stratega e capo dei Giudei".	42 Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews.
43 In quel tempo Simone pose il campo contro Ghezer, la circondò di accampamenti, fece allestire una torre mobile, la spinse contro la città e abbatté una torre impadronendosene.	43 In those days Simon camped against Gaza and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it.
44 I soldati della torre mobile si lanciarono nella città e si produsse in città un grande trambusto.	44 And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city:
45 I cittadini salirono sulle mura insieme con le mogli e i bambini, con le vesti stracciate, e supplicarono a gran voce per indurre Simone a dar loro la destra	45 Insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.
46 e dissero: "Non trattarci secondo le nostre iniquità, ma secondo la tua clemenza".	46 And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy.
47 Simone venne a patti con loro e non combatté oltre contro di loro; ma li scacciò dalla città, purificò le case nelle quali c'erano idoli, e così entrò in città con canti di lode e di ringraziamento.	47 So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving.
48 Egli eliminò da essa ogni contaminazione e vi stabilì uomini che fossero osservanti della legge; poi la fortificò e costruì in essa la propria dimora.	48 Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwellingplace for himself.
49 Ora quelli dell'Acra in Gerusalemme, messi nell'impossibilità di uscire e venire nel paese a comprare e vendere, erano terribilmente affamati e buon numero di essi moriva di fame.	49 They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine.
50 Allora fecero giungere il loro grido a Simone, perché desse loro la destra, e Simone la diede; così li sloggiò di là e purificò l'Acra da tutte le contaminazioni.	50 Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions:
51 Fecero ingresso in quel luogo il ventitré del secondo mese dell'anno centosettantuno, con canti di lode e con palme, con suoni di cetre, cembali e arpe e con inni e canti, perché era stato eliminato un grande nemico da Israele.	51 And entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel.
52 Simone stabilì di celebrare ogni anno questo giorno di festa. Intanto completò la fortificazione del monte del tempio lungo l'Acra; qui abitò con i suoi.	52 He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company.
53 Vedendo poi che suo figlio Giovanni era ormai uomo, Simone lo fece capo di tutte le milizie e questi pose la sua residenza in Ghezer.	53 And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazera.
