1 Il re d'Egitto raccolse forze numerose come la sabbia che è lungo il lido del mare e molte navi e cercava di impadronirsi con inganno del regno di Alessandro per annetterlo al proprio regno.	1 And the king of Egypt gathered together a great host, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships, and went about through deceit to get Alexander's kingdom, and join it to his own.
2 Venne in Siria con dimostrazioni pacifiche e tutte le città gli aprivano le porte e gli andavano incontro, perché era ordine del re Alessandro di andargli incontro, essendo suo suocero.	2 Whereupon he took his journey into Spain in peaceable manner, so as they of the cities opened unto him, and met him: for king Alexander had commanded them so to do, because he was his brother in law.
3 Ma quando Tolomeo entrava nelle città, stabiliva in ognuna di esse le sue truppe di guarnigione.	3 Now as Ptolemee entered into the cities, he set in every one of them a garrison of soldiers to keep it.
4 Quando giunse ad Asdòd, gli mostrarono il tempio di Dagon bruciato e i villaggi intorno distrutti, i cadaveri buttati qua e là e quelli carbonizzati dagli incendi nella guerra: li avevano appunto accumulati lungo il percorso del re.	4 And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt, and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battle; for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass.
5 Raccontarono al re quanto aveva fatto Giònata, per metterlo in cattiva luce, ma il re tacque.	5 Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done, to the intent he might blame him: but the king held his peace.
6 Giònata andò incontro al re in Giaffa con grande apparato e si salutarono a vicenda e passarono la notte colà.	6 Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppa, where they saluted one another, and lodged.
7 Giònata accompagnò poi il re fino al fiume chiamato Elèutero e fece ritorno in Gerusalemme.	7 Afterward Jonathan, when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus, returned again to Jerusalem.
8 Il re Tolomeo si impadronì di tutte le città della costa fino a Selèucia marittima e covava piani iniqui riguardo ad Alessandro.	8 King Ptolemee therefore, having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the sea coast, imagined wicked counsels against Alexander.
9 Mandò un'ambasciata a dire al re Demetrio: "Su, concludiamo un'alleanza fra noi: io ti darò mia figlia, che Alessandro ha in moglie, e la possibilità di rientrare nel regno di tuo padre.	9 Whereupon he sent ambasadors unto king Demetrius, saying, Come, let us make a league betwixt us, and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath, and thou shalt reign in thy father's kingdom:
10 Mi sono pentito di avergli dato mia figlia, perché ha cercato di uccidermi".	10 For I repent that I gave my daughter unto him, for he sought to slay me.
11 Lo calunniò perché egli aspirava al suo regno;	11 Thus did he slander him, because he was desirous of his kingdom.
12 quindi, toltagli la figlia, la diede a Demetrio e cambiò atteggiamento verso Alessandro e divenne così manifesta la loro inimicizia.	12 Wherefore he took his daughter from him, and gave her to Demetrius, and forsook Alexander, so that their hatred was openly known.
13 Tolomeo entrò in Antiochia e cinse la corona dell'Asia; si pose in capo due corone, quella dell'Egitto e quella dell'Asia.	13 Then Ptolemee entered into Antioch, where he set two crowns upon his head, the crown of Asia, and of Egypt.
14 Alessandro in quel frattempo era in Cilicia, perché si erano sollevati gli abitanti di quelle province.	14 In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia, because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him.
15 Appena seppe la cosa, Alessandro venne contro di lui per combatterlo. Tolomeo condusse l'esercito contro di lui e gli andò incontro con forze ingenti e lo sconfisse.	15 But when Alexander heard of this, he came to war against him: whereupon king Ptolemee brought forth his host, and met him with a mighty power, and put him to flight.
16 Alessandro fuggì in Arabia per trovarvi scampo e il re Tolomeo trionfò.	16 So Alexander fled into Arabia there to be defended; but king Ptolemee was exalted:
17 L'arabo Zabdiel tagliò la testa ad Alessandro e la mandò a Tolomeo.	17 For Zabdiel the Arabian took off Alexander's head, and sent it unto Ptolemee.
18 Ma anche il re Tolomeo morì tre giorni dopo e quelli che egli aveva lasciato nelle fortezze furono sopraffatti da altri che si trovavano sulle fortezze stesse.	18 King Ptolemee also died the third day after, and they that were in the strong holds were slain one of another.
19 Così Demetrio divenne re nell'anno centosessantasette.	19 By this means Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and seventh year.
20 In quei giorni Giònata radunò gli uomini della Giudea per espugnare l'Acra in Gerusalemme e allestì molte macchine contro di essa.	20 At the same time Jonathan gathered together them that were in Judea to take the tower that was in Jerusalem: and he made many engines of war against it.
21 Allora alcuni nemici del popolo, uomini iniqui, corsero dal re ad annunciare che Giònata assediava l'Acra.	21 Then came ungodly persons, who hated their own people, went unto the king, and told him that Jonathan besieged the tower,
22 Sentendo la cosa, quegli si adirò; quando ne ebbe conferma, si mise subito in viaggio, venne a Tolemàide e scrisse a Giònata di sospendere l'assedio e di andargli incontro a Tolemàide al più presto per un colloquio.	22 Whereof when he heard, he was angry, and immediately removing, he came to Ptolemais, and wrote unto Jonathan, that he should not lay siege to the tower, but come and speak with him at Ptolemais in great haste.
23 Quando Giònata ricevette il messaggio, ordinò di continuare l'assedio e, scelti alcuni anziani e sacerdoti, decise di esporre se stesso al pericolo;	23 Nevertheless Jonathan, when he heard this, commanded to besiege it still: and he chose certain of the elders of Israel and the priests, and put himself in peril;
24 prese con sé argento e oro, vesti e molti altri doni e si recò dal re a Tolemàide e trovò favore presso di lui.	24 And took silver and gold, and raiment, and divers presents besides, and went to Ptolemais unto the king, where he found favour in his sight.
25 C'erano però alcuni traditori del suo popolo a deporre contro di lui,	25 And though certain ungodly men of the people had made complaints against him,
26 ma il re lo trattò come lo avevano trattato i suoi predecessori e lo esaltò davanti a tutti i suoi amici,	26 Yet the king entreated him as his predecessors had done before, and promoted him in the sight of all his friends,
27 lo confermò nella dignità di sommo sacerdote e in tutti gli onori che aveva prima e stabilì che fosse annoverato tra i primi suoi amici.	27 And confirmed him in the high priesthood, and in all the honours that he had before, and gave him preeminence among his chief friends.
28 Giònata ottenne che il re dichiarasse la Giudea esente dai tributi insieme alle tre toparchie e alla Samaria e gli promise trecento talenti.	28 Then Jonathan desired the king, that he would make Judea free from tribute, as also the three governments, with the country of Samaria; and he promised him three hundred talents.
29 Il re acconsentì e scrisse a Giònata, a proposito di tutto questo, lettere del seguente tenore:	29 So the king consented, and wrote letters unto Jonathan of all these things after this manner:
30 "Il re Demetrio al fratello Giònata e al popolo dei Giudei salute.	30 King Demetrius unto his brother Jonathan, and unto the nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:
31 Rimettiamo anche a voi copia della lettera che abbiamo scritta a Làstene nostro parente intorno a voi, perché ne prendiate conoscenza.	31 We send you here a copy of the letter which we did write unto our cousin Lasthenes concerning you, that ye might see it.
32 Re Demetrio a Làstene suo padre salute.	32 King Demetrius unto his father Lasthenes sendeth greeting:
33 Abbiamo deciso di beneficare il popolo dei Giudici nostri amici e rispettosi dei nostri diritti, per la loro benevolenza nei nostri riguardi.	33 We are determined to do good to the people of the Jews, who are our friends, and keep covenants with us, because of their good will toward us.
34 Abbiamo assegnato a loro il territorio della Giudea; i tre distretti di Afèrema, Lidda e Ramatàim restano trasferiti dalla Samaria alla Giudea con le loro dipendenze in favore di quanti offrono sacrifici in Gerusalemme, in compenso dei diritti che il re prelevava in passato ogni anno da loro sui frutti della terra e degli alberi.	34 Wherefore we have ratified unto them the borders of Judea, with the three governments of Apherema and Lydda and Ramathem, that are added unto Judea from the country of Samaria, and all things appertaining unto them, for all such as do sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the payments which the king received of them yearly aforetime out of the fruits of the earth and of trees.
35 Da qui innanzi tutte le altre nostre competenze delle decime e delle tasse a noi dovute e le saline e le corone a noi spettanti, tutto condoniamo loro.	35 And as for other things that belong unto us, of the tithes and customs pertaining unto us, as also the saltpits, and the crown taxes, which are due unto us, we discharge them of them all for their relief.
36 Nessuna di queste disposizioni sarà mai revocata da oggi.	36 And nothing hereof shall be revoked from this time forth for ever.
37 Sia dunque vostra cura preparare una copia della presente e rimetterla a Giònata perché sia esposta sul monte santo in luogo visibile".	37 Now therefore see that thou make a copy of these things, and let it be delivered unto Jonathan, and set upon the holy mount in a conspicuous place.
38 Il re Demetrio, vedendo che il paese era in pace sotto di lui e nessuno gli faceva resistenza, congedò le truppe perché ognuno tornasse a casa sua, eccetto le forze straniere che aveva assoldate dalle isole dei pagani. Allora gli si inimicarono tutte le milizie dei suoi padri.	38 After this, when king Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him, and that no resistance was made against him, he sent away all his forces, every one to his own place, except certain bands of strangers, whom he had gathered from the isles of the heathen: wherefore all the forces of his fathers hated him.
39 Trifone, che prima stava con Alessandro, vide che tutte le milizie mormoravano contro Demetrio e andò presso l'arabo Imalcue che allevava il piccolo Antioco figlio di Alessandro.	39 Moreover there was one Tryphon, that had been of Alexander's part afore, who, seeing that all the host murmured against Demetrius, went to Simalcue the Arabian that brought up Antiochus the young son of Alexander,
40 Egli insistette che glielo cedesse per farlo regnare al posto di suo padre e gli riferì quanto aveva detto Demetrio e l'ostilità che avevano per lui i soldati, e rimase là molti giorni.	40 And lay sore upon him to deliver him this young Antiochus, that he might reign in his father's stead: he told him therefore all that Demetrius had done, and how his men of war were at enmity with him, and there he remained a long season.
41 Giònata intanto mandò a chiedere al re che richiamasse gli occupanti dell'Acra in Gerusalemme e quelli delle altre fortezze, perché erano sempre in lotta con Israele.	41 In the mean time Jonathan sent unto king Demetrius, that he would cast those of the tower out of Jerusalem, and those also in the fortresses: for they fought against Israel.
42 Demetrio fece rispondere a Giònata: "Non solo questo farò per te e per il tuo popolo ma colmerò te e il tuo popolo di onori appena ne avrò l'opportunità.	42 So Demetrius sent unto Jonathan, saying, I will not only do this for thee and thy people, but I will greatly honour thee and thy nation, if opportunity serve.
43 Ora però farai bene a inviarmi uomini che combattano con me, perché si sono ritirate le mie truppe".	43 Now therefore thou shalt do well, if thou send me men to help me; for all my forces are gone from me.
44 Giònata gli inviò ad Antiochia tremila degli uomini più forti; essi si recarono presso il re, e il re si rallegrò della loro venuta.	44 Upon this Jonathan sent him three thousand strong men unto Antioch: and when they came to the king, the king was very glad of their coming.
45 I cittadini della capitale si radunarono al centro della città in numero di circa centoventimila uomini e volevano eliminare il re.	45 Howbeit they that were of the city gathered themselves together into the midst of the city, to the number of an hundred and twenty thousand men, and would have slain the king.
46 Il re si rifugiò nel palazzo, ma i cittadini occuparono le vie della città e incominciarono i combattimenti.	46 Wherefore the king fled into the court, but they of the city kept the passages of the city, and began to fight.
47 Il re chiamò in aiuto i Giudei, i quali accorsero tutti a lui; poi si sparsero per la città e ne uccisero in quel giorno circa centomila;	47 Then the king called to the Jews for help, who came unto him all at once, and dispersing themselves through the city slew that day in the city to the number of an hundred thousand.
48 quindi incendiarono la città, fecero in quel giorno gran bottino e salvarono il re.	48 Also they set fire on the city, and gat many spoils that day, and delivered the king.
49 I cittadini videro che i Giudei si erano impadroniti della città a loro piacere e si persero d'animo e gridarono verso il re con voce supplichevole:	49 So when they of the city saw that the Jews had got the city as they would, their courage was abated: wherefore they made supplication to the king, and cried, saying,
50 "Stendi a noi la destra e desistano i Giudei dal combattere noi e la città".	50 Grant us peace, and let the Jews cease from assaulting us and the city.
51 Gettarono le armi e fecero la pace. I Giudei crebbero in fama presso il re e presso quanti erano nel suo regno e fecero ritorno in Gerusalemme portando grande bottino.	51 With that they cast away their weapons, and made peace; and the Jews were honoured in the sight of the king, and in the sight of all that were in his realm; and they returned to Jerusalem, having great spoils.
52 Demetrio rimase sul trono del suo regno e il paese fu in pace sotto di lui.	52 So king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.
53 Ma rinnegò quanto aveva detto, cambiò rapporti con Giònata e non corrispose alla benevolenza che questi gli aveva dimostrata e lo fece soffrire molto.	53 Nevertheless he dissembled in all that ever he spake, and estranged himself from Jonathan, neither rewarded he him according to the benefits which he had received of him, but troubled him very sore.
54 Dopo questi fatti, Trifone ritornò con Antioco ancora adolescente, il quale cominciò a regnare e cinse la corona.	54 After this returned Tryphon, and with him the young child Antiochus, who reigned, and was crowned.
55 Si raccolsero presso di lui tutte le milizie che Demetrio aveva licenziate e mossero guerra contro di lui ed egli fuggì e rimase sconfitto.	55 Then there gathered unto him all the men of war, whom Demetrius had put away, and they fought against Demetrius, who turned his back and fled.
56 Trifone catturò gli elefanti e si impadronì di Antiochia.	56 Moreover Tryphon took the elephants, and won Antioch.
57 Allora il giovinetto Antioco scrisse a Giònata: "Ti confermo il sommo sacerdozio, ti faccio capo dei quattro distretti e ti concedo di essere tra gli amici del re".	57 At that time young Antiochus wrote unto Jonathan, saying, I confirm thee in the high priesthood, and appoint thee ruler over the four governments, and to be one of the king's friends.
58 Gli inviò vasi d'oro e un servizio da tavola con la facoltà di bere in quei vasi, di vestire la porpora e portare la fibbia d'oro.	58 Upon this he sent him golden vessels to be served in, and gave him leave to drink in gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to wear a golden buckle.
59 Nominò anche Simone suo fratello comandante dalla Scala di Tiro fino ai confini dell'Egitto.	59 His brother Simon also he made captain from the place called The ladder of Tyrus unto the borders of Egypt.
60 Giònata si diede a percorrere la provincia dell'Oltrefiume e le varie città e accorse a lui, come alleato, tutto l'esercito della Siria. Andò ad Ascalòna e i cittadini gli uscirono incontro a rendergli omaggio.	60 Then Jonathan went forth, and passed through the cities beyond the water, and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves unto him for to help him: and when he came to Ascalon, they of the city met him honourably.
61 Di là passò a Gaza, ma gli abitanti di Gaza gli chiusero le porte; egli la cinse d'assedio e incendiò i sobborghi e li mise a sacco.	61 From whence he went to Gaza, but they of Gaza shut him out; wherefore he laid siege unto it, and burned the suburbs thereof with fire, and spoiled them.
62 Allora quelli di Gaza supplicarono Giònata, il quale diede loro la destra, prelevando i figli dei loro capi come ostaggi e inviandoli a Gerusalemme; poi percorse la regione fino a Damasco.	62 Afterward, when they of Gaza made supplication unto Jonathan, he made peace with them, and took the sons of their chief men for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem, and passed through the country unto Damascus.
63 Giònata venne a sapere che i capi di Demetrio si trovavano presso Cades in Galilea con un numeroso esercito e con l'intenzione di distoglierlo dall'impresa.	63 Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius' princes were come to Cades, which is in Galilee, with a great power, purposing to remove him out of the country,
64 Egli si mosse contro di loro, lasciando il fratello Simone nel paese.	64 He went to meet them, and left Simon his brother in the country.
65 Simone si accampò contro Bet-Zur e l'assalì per molti giorni assediandola.	65 Then Simon encamped against Bethsura and fought against it a long season, and shut it up:
66 Allora supplicarono che desse loro la destra ed egli la diede, ma li fece sloggiare di là, occupò la città e vi pose una guarnigione.	66 But they desired to have peace with him, which he granted them, and then put them out from thence, and took the city, and set a garrison in it.
67 Giònata a sua volta e il suo esercito si erano accampati presso il lago di Gennesaret e raggiunsero di buon mattino la pianura di Casòr.	67 As for Jonathan and his host, they pitched at the water of Gennesar, from whence betimes in the morning they gat them to the plain of Nasor.
68 Ed ecco l'esercito degli stranieri avanzare contro di lui nella pianura, dopo aver disposto appostamenti contro di lui sui monti. Essi avanzavano di fronte	68 And, behold, the host of strangers met them in the plain, who, having laid men in ambush for him in the mountains, came themselves over against him.
69 quando gli appostati sbucarono dalle loro posizioni e attaccarono battaglia.	69 So when they that lay in ambush rose out of their places and joined battle, all that were of Jonathan's side fled;
70 Tutti gli uomini di Giònata fuggirono, nessuno di loro rimase se non Mattatia figlio di Assalonne e Giuda figlio di Calfi, comandanti di contingenti dell'esercito.	70 Insomuch as there was not one of them left, except Mattathias the son of Absalom, and Judas the son of Calphi, the captains of the host.
71 Allora Giònata si stracciò le vesti, si cosparse il capo di polvere e si prostrò a pregare.	71 Then Jonathan rent his clothes, and cast earth upon his head, and prayed.
72 Poi ritornò a combattere contro di loro, li sconfisse e li costrinse alla fuga.	72 Afterwards turning again to battle, he put them to flight, and so they ran away.
73 I suoi che erano fuggiti, quando videro ciò, ritornarono a lui e con lui si diedero all'inseguimento fino a Cades dov'era il loro accampamento e là anch'essi si accamparono.	73 Now when his own men that were fled saw this, they turned again unto him, and with him pursued them to Cades, even unto their own tents, and there they camped.
74 Gli stranieri caduti in quel giorno furono circa tremila. Giònata tornò poi in Gerusalemme.	74 So there were slain of the heathen that day about three thousand men: but Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.
