1 Elifaz di Teman prese a sua volta la parola e disse:	1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2 "Un sapiente risponde forse con dottrina falsa e si riempie il ventre con vento di Levante?	2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
3 Arguisce forse con ragioni inconsistenti e con discorsi che non servono a nulla?	3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
4 Tu pure vuoi distruggere la pietà e sopprimere la riflessione davanti a Dio.	4 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
5 In verità, il tuo crimine ispira le tue parole e adotti il linguaggio dei furbi.	5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
6 E' la tua bocca che ti condanna, non io, e le tue labbra testimoniano contro di te.	6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
7 Sei tu forse il primo uomo che è nato? Sei stato generato prima dei colli?	7 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
8 Hai tu ascoltato i segreti consigli di Dio, e ti sei accaparrata la sapienza?	8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
9 Che cosa sai tu che noi non sappiamo? E cosa comprendi che non sia a noi familiare?	9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
10 Anche tra noi c'è il vecchio, c'è il canuto; qualcuno che è più anziano di tuo padre.	10 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
11 Ti sembrano poca cosa le consolazioni di Dio e la parola soave che ti è rivolta?	11 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
12 Perché ti trasporta la passione, e perché si storcono i tuoi occhi	12 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
13 quando rivolgi contro Dio il tuo furore e lanci parole dalla tua bocca?	13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
14 Chi è l'uomo perché si ritenga puro e perché si dica giusto un nato di donna?	14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 Ecco, neppure dei suoi santi egli ha fiducia, e i cieli non sono puri ai suoi occhi;	15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
16 quanto meno l'uomo detestabile e corrotto, che beve l'iniquità come acqua!	16 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
17 Voglio spiegartelo, ascoltami; ti racconterò ciò che ho visto,	17 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
18 ciò che narrano i saggi senza celarlo, avendolo udito dai loro antenati.	18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
19 Ad essi soli fu concesso questo paese, quando nessuno straniero si era infiltrato tra essi.	19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 Il malvagio si tormenta tutta la vita; qualunque sia il numero degli anni riservati al tiranno,	20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
21 grida di spavento risuonano nei suoi orecchi; quando sta in pace, lo assalta il brigante.	21 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
22 Non spera di uscire dalle tenebre, destinato com'è al pugnale.	22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
23 Vaga in cerca di cibo, ma dove andare? Sa che la sua sventura è vicina.	23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 Il giorno tenebroso lo spaventa, l'ansia e l'angoscia lo assalgono, come un re pronto all'assalto!	24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25 Infatti, ha steso contro Dio la sua mano, ha osato sfidare l'Onnipotente;	25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
26 correva contro di lui a testa alta, sotto il dorso blindato dei suoi scudi;	26 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
27 perché aveva la faccia coperta di grasso ed i lombi circondati di pinguedine.	27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
28 Aveva abitato in città diroccate, in case non più adatte a dimora, destinate a diventare macerie.	28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
29 Non si arricchirà, non durerà la sua fortuna; le sue possessioni non scenderanno nel sepolcro.	29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
30 Non sfuggirà alle tenebre, una fiamma seccherà i suoi germogli ed il vento porterà via i suoi fiori.	30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31 Non confidi nella vanità che inganna, perché la vanità sarà la sua ricompensa.	31 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
32 Ciò si compirà anzitempo; i suoi rami non rinverdiranno più.	32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
33 Sarà come vite che lascia cadere l'agresto, come l'ulivo che perde la fioritura.	33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
34 Sì, la banda degli empi è sterile ed il fuoco divora le tende della venalità.	34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
35 Chi concepisce malizia, genera sventura, e il suo ventre nutre la delusione".	35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
