Siracide 47

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Après lui se leva Natân pour prophétiser au temps de David.	1 After him arose Nathan, to prophesy in the time of David.
2 Comme on prélève la graisse pour le sacrifice de communion, ainsi David fut choisi parmiles Israélites.	2 As the fat is set apart from the communion sacrifice, so was David chosen out of the Israelites.
3 Il se joua du lion comme du chevreau, de l'ours comme de l'agneau.	3 He played with lions as though with kids, and with bears as though with lambs.
4 Jeune encore, n'a-t-il pas tué le géant et lavé la honte du peuple, en lançant avec la fronde lapierre qui abattit l'arrogance de Goliath?	4 While stil a boy, did he not slay the giant and take away the people's shame, by hurling a stone fromhis sling and cutting short the boasting of Goliath?
5 Car il invoqua le Seigneur Très-Haut, qui accorda à sa droite la force pour mettre à mort unpuissant guerrier et relever la vigueur de son peuple.	5 For he cal ed on the Lord Most High, who gave strength to his right arm to put a mighty warrior to deathand assert the strength of his own people.
6 Aussi lui a-t-on fait gloire de 10.000 et l'a-t-on loué dans les bénédictions du Seigneur, enlui offrant une couronne de gloire.	6 Hence they gave him credit for ten thousand, and praised him while they blessed the Lord, by offeringhim a crown of glory.
7 Car il détruisit les ennemis alentour, il anéantit les Philistins ses adversaires, pour toujours ilbrisa leur vigueur.	7 For he destroyed the enemies on every front, he annihilated his foes, the Philistines, and crushed theirstrength for ever.
8 Dans toutes ses oeuvres il rendit hommage au Saint Très-Haut dans des paroles de gloire; detout son coeur il chanta, montrant son amour pour son Créateur.	8 In al his activities he gave thanks to the Holy One Most High in words of glory; he put all his heart intohis songs out of love for his Creator.
9 Il établit devant l'autel des chantres, pour émettre les chants les plus doux;	9 He placed singers before the altar, melodiously to sing;
10 il donna aux fêtes la splendeur, un éclat parfait aux solennités, faisant louer le saint nom duSeigneur, faisant retentir le sanctuaire dès le matin.	10 he gave the feasts their splendour, the festivals their solemn pomp, causing the Lord's holy name tobe praised and the sanctuary to resound from dawn.
11 Le Seigneur a effacé ses fautes, il a fait grandir sa vigueur pour toujours, il lui a accordéune alliance royale, un trône glorieux en Israël.	11 The Lord took away his sins, making his strength ever greater; he gave him a royal covenant, and aglorious throne in Israel.
12 Un fils savant lui succéda qui, grâce à lui, vécut heureux.	12 A wise son succeeded him, who lived content, thanks to him.
13 Salomon régna dans un temps de paix et Dieu lui accorda la tranquillité alentour, afin qu'ilélevât une maison pour son nom et préparât un sanctuaire éternel.	13 Solomon reigned in a time of peace, and God gave him peace al round so that he could raise a houseto his name and prepare an everlasting sanctuary.
14 Comme tu étais sage dans ta jeunesse, rempli d'intelligence ainsi qu'un fleuve!	14 How wise you were despite your youth, like a river, brimming over with intelligence!
15 Ton esprit a couvert la terre, tu l'as remplie de sentences obscures.	15 Your mind ranged the earth, you fil ed it with mysterious sayings.
16 Ta renommée est parvenue jusqu'aux îles lointaines et tu fus aimé dans ta paix.	16 Your name reached the distant islands, and you were loved for your peace.
17 Tes chants, tes proverbes, tes sentences et tes réponses ont fait l'admiration du monde.	17 Your songs, your proverbs, your sayings and your answers were the wonder of the world.
18 Au nom du Seigneur Dieu, de celui qu'on appelle le Dieu d'Israël, tu as amassé l'or commede l'étain et comme le plomb tu as multiplié l'argent.	18 In the name of the Lord God, of him who is cal ed the God of Israel, you amassed gold like so muchtin, and made silver as common as lead.
19 Tu as livré ton corps aux femmes, tu as été l'esclave de tes sens.	19 You abandoned your body to women, you became the slave of your appetites.
20 Tu as fait une tache à ta gloire, tu as profané ta race, au point de faire venir la colère contretes enfants et l'affliction pour ta folie:	20 You stained your honour, you profaned your stock, so bringing retribution on your children andaffliction for your fol y:
21 il se dressa un double pouvoir, il surgit d'Ephraïm un royaume révolté.	21 the empire split in two, from Ephraim arose a rebel kingdom.
22 Mais le Seigneur ne renonce jamais à sa miséricorde et n'efface aucune de ses paroles, il nerefuse pas à son élu une postérité et n'extirpe point la race de celui qui l'a aimé. Aussi a-t-il donné à Jacob unreste et à David une racine issue de lui.	22 But the Lord never goes back on his mercy, never cancels any of his words, wil neither deny offspringto his elect nor stamp out the line of the man who loved him. And hence, he has granted a remnant to Jacob andto David a root sprung from him.
23 Et Salomon se reposa avec ses pères, laissant après lui quelqu'un de sa race, le plus fou dupeuple, dénué d'intelligence: Roboam, qui poussa le peuple à la révolte.	23 Solomon rested with his ancestors, leaving one of his stock as his successor, the stupidest member ofthe nation, brainless Rehoboam, who drove the people to rebel.
24 Quant à Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, c'est lui qui fit pécher Israël et enseigna à Ephraïm la voiedu mal. Dès lors leurs fautes se multiplièrent tant qu'elles les firent exiler loin de leur pays.	24 Next, Jeroboam son of Nebat, who made Israel sin, and set Ephraim on the way of evil; from then ontheir sins multiplied so excessively as to drive them out of their country;
25 Car ils cherchaient toute sorte de mal, jusqu'à encourir le châtiment.	25 for they tried out every kind of wickedness, until vengeance overtook them.
