Siracide 12

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Si tu fais le bien, sache à qui tu le fais et tes bienfaits ne seront pas perdus.	1 If you mean to do a kindness, choose the right person, then your good deeds wil not be wasted.
2 Fais le bien à un homme pieux, il te le rendra, sinon par lui-même, du moins par le Très-Haut.	2 Do good to someone devout, and you wil be rewarded, if not by that person, then certainly by the MostHigh.
3 Pas de bienfaits à qui persévère dans le mal et se refuse à faire la charité.	3 No good will come to one who persists in evil, or who refuses to give alms.
4 Donne à l'homme pieux et ne viens pas en aide au pécheur.	4 Give to the devout, do not go to the help of a sinner.
5 Fais le bien à qui est humble et ne donne pas à l'impie. Refuse-lui son pain, ne le lui donnepas, il en deviendrait plus fort que toi. Car tu serais payé au double en méchanceté pour tous les bienfaits dont tul'aurais gratifié.	5 Do good to the humble, give nothing to the godless. Refuse him bread, do not give him any, it mightmake him stronger than you are; then you would be repaid evil twice over for al the good you had done him.
6 Car le Très-Haut lui-même a les pécheurs en horreur et aux impies il infligera une punition.	6 For the Most High himself detests sinners, and wil repay the wicked with what they deserve.
7 Donne à l'homme bon, mais ne viens pas en aide au pécheur.	7 Give to the good, and do not go to the help of a sinner.
8 Dans la prospérité on ne peut reconnaître le véritable ami, et dans l'adversité l'ennemi nepeut se cacher.	8 In prosperity you cannot always tel a true friend, but in adversity you cannot mistake an enemy.
9 Quand un homme est heureux, ses ennemis ont du chagrin; quand il est malheureux, mêmeson ami l'abandonne.	9 When someone is doing well that person's enemies are sad, when someone is doing badly, even afriend wil keep at a distance.
10 Ne te fie jamais à ton ennemi; de même que l'airain se rouille, ainsi fait sa méchanceté.	10 Do not ever trust an enemy; as bronze tarnishes, so does an enemy's malice.
11 Même s'il se fait humble et s'avance en courbant l'échine, veille sur toi-même et méfie-toide lui. Agis envers lui comme si tu polissais un miroir, sache que sa rouille ne tiendra pas jusqu'à la fin.	11 Even if he behaves humbly and comes bowing and scraping, maintain your reserve and be on yourguard against him. Behave towards him as if you were polishing a mirror, you will find that his tarnish cannot last.
12 Ne le mets pas près de toi, il pourrait te renverser et prendre ta place. Ne le fais pas asseoirà ta droite, il chercherait à te ravir ton siège, et finalement tu comprendrais mes paroles, tu te repentirais ensongeant à mon discours.	12 Do not stand him beside you in case he thrusts you out and takes your place. Do not seat him on yourright, or he will be after your position, and then you wil remember what I have said and sadly admit that I wasright.
13 Qui aurait pitié du charmeur que mord le serpent et de tous ceux qui affrontent les bêtesféroces?	13 Who feels sorry for a snake-charmer bitten by a snake, or for those who take risks with savageanimals? -
14 Il en va de même de celui qui fait du pécheur son compagnon et qui prend part à sespéchés.	14 just so for one who consorts with a sinner, and becomes an accomplice in his sins.
15 Il reste quelque temps avec toi, mais, si tu chancelles, il ne se contient plus.	15 He wil stay with you for a while, but if you once give way he wil press his advantage.
16 L'ennemi n'a que douceur sur les lèvres, mais dans son coeur il médite de te jeter dans lafosse. L'ennemi a des larmes dans les yeux, et s'il trouve l'occasion il ne se rassasiera pas de sang.	16 An enemy may have sweetness on his lips, and in his heart a scheme to throw you into the ditch. Anenemy may have tears in his eyes, but if he gets a chance there can never be too much blood for him.
17 Si le sort t'est contraire, tu le trouveras là avant toi, et sous prétexte de t'aider il te saisira letalon.	17 If you meet with misfortune, you will find him there before you, and, pretending to help you, he wil tripyou up.
18 Il hochera la tête et battra des mains, il ne fera que murmurer et changer de visage.	18 He wil wag his head and clap his hands, he wil whisper a lot and his expression wil change.
