| 1 Paroles de celui qui assemble, (du) fils de celui qui répand les vérités. Vision racontée par un homme qui est avec Dieu, et qui, fortifié par la présence de Dieu (demeurant avec lui), a dit : | 1 The words of Gatherer the son of Vomiter. The vision which the man spoke with whom God is, and who being strengthened by God, abiding with him, said: |
| 2 Je suis le plus insensé des hommes, et la sagesse des hommes n'est pas en moi. | 2 I am the most foolish of men, and the wisdom of men is not with me. |
| 3 Je n'ai pas appris la sagesse, et je ne connais pas la science des saints. | 3 I have not learned wisdom, and have not known the science of saints. |
| 4 Qui est monté au ciel, et en est descendu ? Qui a retenu le vent dans ses mains ? Qui a lié les eaux comme dans un vêtement ? Qui a affermi toutes les extrémités de la terre ? Quel est son nom, et quel est le nom de son fils, si tu le sais ? | 4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, and descended? who hath held the wind in his hands? who hath bound up the waters together as in a garment? who hath raised up all the borders of the earth? what is his name, and what is the name of his son, if thou knowest? |
| 5 Toute parole de Dieu est passée au feu ; il est un bouclier pour (tous) ceux qui espèrent en lui. | 5 Every word of God is fire tried: he is a buckler to them that hope in him. |
| 6 N'ajoute rien à ses paroles, de peur que tu ne sois repris et trouvé menteur.line L'enfer, la femme stérile (l'impudique), la terre qui ne se rassasie pas d'eau, et le feu qui ne dit jamais : C'est assez. | 6 Add not any thing to his words, lest thou be reproved, and found a liar: |
| 7 Je vous ai demandé deux choses ; ne me les refusez pas avant que je meure. | 7 Two things I have asked of thee, deny them not to me before I die. |
| 8 Eloignez de moi la vanité et les paroles mensongères. Ne me donnez ni la pauvreté ni les richesses ; accordez-moi seulement ce qui m'est nécessaire pour vivre ; | 8 Remove far from me vanity, and lying words. Give me neither beggary, nor riches: give me only the necessaries of life: |
| 9 de peur qu'étant rassasié, je ne sois tenté de vous renier, et de dire : Qui est le Seigneur ? ou que, pressé par la pauvreté, je ne dérobe, et que je ne parjure le nom de mon Dieu. | 9 Lest perhaps being filled, I should be tempted to deny, and say: Who is the Lord? or being compelled by poverty, I should steal, and forswear the name of my God. |
| 10 N'accuse pas le serviteur auprès de son maître, de peur qu'il ne te maudisse et que tu n'en souffres (ne succombes). | 10 Accuse not a servant to his master, lest he curse thee, and thou fall. |
| 11 Il est une race qui maudit son père, et qui ne bénit pas sa mère. | 11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. |
| 12 Il est une race qui se croit pure, et qui cependant n'a pas été lavée de ses souillures. | 12 A generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet are not washed from their filthiness. |
| 13 Il est une race dont les yeux sont altiers et les paupières élevées (relevées). | 13 A generation, whose eyes are lofty, and their eyelids lifted up on high. |
| 14 Il est une race qui a des glaives pour dents et qui déchire (mâche) avec ses mâchoires, pour dévorer ceux qui n'ont rien sur la terre, et qui sont pauvres parmi les hommes. | 14 A generation, that for teeth hath swords, and grindeth with their jaw teeth, to devour the needy from off the earth, and the poor from among men. |
| 15 La sangsue a deux filles, qui disent : Apporte, apporte. Il y a trois choses insatiables, et une quatrième qui ne dit jamais : C'est assez. | 15 The horseleech hath two daughters that say: Bring, bring. There are three things that never are satisfied, and the fourth never saith: It is enough. |
| 16 L'enfer, la femme stérile, la terre qui ne se rassasie pas d'eau, et le feu qui ne dit jamais: C'est assez. | 16 Hell, and the mouth of the womb, and the earth which is not satisfied with water: and the fire never saith: It is enough. |
| 17 Que l'œil de celui qui insulte son père, et qui méprise la mère qui l'a enfanté (l'enfantement de sa mère), soit arraché (percé) par les corbeaux des torrents et dévoré par les petits de l'aigle ! | 17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and that despiseth the labour of his mother in bearing him, let the ravens of the brooks pick it out, and the young eagles eat it. |
| 18 Trois choses me sont difficiles à comprendre, et la quatrième m'est entièrement inconnue : | 18 Three things are hard to me, and the fourth I am utterly ignorant of. |
| 19 la trace de l'aigle dans le ciel, la trace du serpent sur le rocher, la trace d'un navire au milieu de la mer, et la voie de l'homme dans sa jeunesse (son adolescence). | 19 The way of an eagle in the air, the way of a serpent upon a rock, the way of a ship in the midst of the sea, and the way of a man in youth. |
| 20 Telle est aussi la voie de la femme adultère, qui mange, et dit en s'essuyant la bouche : Je n'ai pas fait de mal. | 20 Such is also the way of an adulterous woman, who eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith: I have done no evil. |
| 21 Trois choses font trembler (troublent) la terre, et elle ne peut supporter la quatrième : | 21 By three things the earth is disturbed, and the fourth it cannot bear: |
| 22 un esclave qui vient à régner, un insensé qui (quand il) est rassasié de pain ; | 22 By a slave when he reigneth: by a fool when he is filled with meat: |
| 23 une femme digne de haine, qu'un homme a épousée, et une servante qui est devenue l'héritière de sa maîtresse. | 23 By an odious woman when she is married: and by a bondwoman when she is heir to her mistress. |
| 24 Il y a sur la terre quatre choses très petites, et qui sont plus sages que les sages mêmes : | 24 There are four very little things of the earth, and they are wiser than the wise: |
| 25 les fourmis, peuple faible, qui fait sa provision pendant la moisson ; | 25 The ants, a feeble people, which provide themselves food in the harvest: |
| 26 les lapins (le levraut, note), nation sans puissance, qui établit sa demeure dans les roches ; | 26 The rabbit, a weak people, which maketh its bed in the rock: |
| 27 les sauterelles qui n'ont pas de roi, et qui sortent toutes par bandes ; | 27 The locust hath no king, yet they all go out by their bands. |
| 28 le lézard, qui se soutient avec ses mains, et qui demeure dans le(s) palais du (des) roi(s). | 28 The stellio supporteth itself on hands, and dwelleth in kings' houses. |
| 29 Il y a trois choses qui ont une belle allure, et une quatrième qui s'avance magnifiquement (avec succès) : | 29 There are three things, which go well, and the fourth that walketh happily: |
| 30 le lion, le plus fort des animaux, qui ne craint rien de tout ce qu'il rencontre ; | 30 A lion, the strongest of beasts, who hath no fear of any thing he meeteth: |
| 31 le coq, dont la démarche est hardie, et le bélier, et le roi à qui rien ne résiste. | 31 A cock girded about the loins: and a ram: and a king, whom none can resist. |
| 32 Tel s'est montré insensé, après avoir été élevé à un rang sublime ; car, s'il avait été intelligent, il aurait mis sa (la) main sur sa bouche. | 32 There is that hath appeared a fool after he was lifted up on high: for if he had understood, he would have laid his hand upon his mouth. |
| 33 Celui qui presse trop fort les mamelles pour en tirer du lait en fait sortir un suc épais (du beurre) ; celui qui se mouche violemment tire le sang, et celui qui excite la colère produit les querelles. | 33 And he that strongly squeezeth the papa to bring out milk, straineth out butter: and he that violently bloweth his nose, bringeth out blood: and he that provoketh wrath bringeth forth strife. |
