BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Habló Yahveh a Moisés y le dijo:	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
2 «Haz que los israelitas tomen venganza de los madianitas. Luego irás a reunirte con tu parentela.»	2 'Exact the ful vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. Afterwards you will be gathered to yourpeople.'
3 Moisés habló al pueblo y le dijo: «Que se armen algunos de vosotros para la guerra de Yahveh contra Madián, para tomar de Madián la venganza de Yahveh.	3 Moses said to the people, 'Some of you are to take up arms for Yahweh's campaign against Midian,to carry out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.
4 Pondréis sobre las armas mil de cada tribu, de todas las tribus de Israel.»	4 You will put a thousand men in the field from each of the tribes of Israel.'
5 Los millares de Israel suministraron, a razón de mil por cada tribu, 12.000 hombres armados para la guerra.	5 In this way Israel's thousands provided twelve thousand men equipped for war, one thousand fromeach tribe:
6 Moisés envió al combate mil por cada tribu, y con ellos a Pinjás, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, que llevaba en su mano los objetos sagrados y las trompetas del clamoreo.	6 Moses put them in the field, one thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar,to go with them carrying the sacred objects and the trumpets for the battle cry.
7 Atacaron a Madián como había mandado Yahveh a Moisés y mataron a todos los varones.	7 They made war on Midian, as Yahweh had ordered Moses, and put every male to death.
8 Mataron también a los reyes de Madián: Eví, Réquem, Sur, Jur y Rebá, cinco reyes madianitas; y a Balaam, hijo de Beor, lo mataron a filo de espada.	8 What is more, they kil ed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five Midianite kings;they also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.
9 Los israelitas hicieron cautivas a las mujeres de Madián y a sus niños y saquearon su ganado, sus rebaños, y todos sus bienes.	9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their little ones captive and carried off al their cattle, altheir flocks and al their goods as booty.
10 Dieron fuego a todas las ciudades en que habitaban y a todos sus campamentos.	10 They set fire to the towns where they lived and to al their encampments.
11 Reunieron todo el botín que habían capturado, hombres y bestias,	11 Then, taking al their booty, everything they had captured, human and animal,
12 y llevaron los cautivos, la presa y el botín ante Moisés, ante el sacerdote Eleazar y ante toda la comunidad de los israelitas, al campamento, en las Estepas de Moab, que están cerca del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.	12 they brought the captives, spoil and booty to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the whole community ofIsraelites at the camp on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho.
13 Moisés, el sacerdote Eleazar y todos los principales de la comunidad salieron a su encuentro hasta fuera del campamento.	13 Moses, the priest Eleazar and al the leaders of the community went out of the camp to meet them.
14 Moisés se encolerizó contra los jefes de las tropas, jefes de millar y jefes de cien, que volvían de la expedición guerrera.	14 Moses was enraged with the officers of the army, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, who had come back from this military expedition.
15 Les dijo Moisés: «¿Pero habéis dejado con vida a todas las mujeres?	15 He said, 'Why have you spared the life of al the women?
16 Precisamente ellas fueron las que indujeron a prevaricar contra Yahveh a los israelitas, siguiendo el consejo de Balaam, cuando lo de Peor; por eso azotó la plaga a la comunidad de Yahveh.	16 They were the very ones who, on Balaam's advice, caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to Yahwehin the affair at Peor: hence the plague which struck Yahweh's community.
17 Matad, pues, a todos los niños varones. Y a toda mujer que haya conocido varón, que haya dormido con varón, matadla también.	17 So kil al the male children and kil al the women who have ever slept with a man;
18 Pero dejad con vida para vosotros a todas las muchachas que no hayan dormido con varón.	18 but spare the lives of the young girls who have never slept with a man, and keep them foryourselves.
19 Y vosotros, todos los que hayáis matado a alguno y todos los que hayáis tocado a algún muerto, acampad fuera del campamento siete días. Purificaos vosotros y vuestros cautivos, el día tercero y el día séptimo.	19 As for you, bivouac outside the camp for seven days, everyone who has kil ed anyone or touched acorpse. Purify yourselves and your prisoners on the third and seventh days,
20 Purificad también todos los vestidos, todos los objetos de cuero, todo tejido de pelo de cabra y todo objeto de madera.»	20 and purify al clothing, everything made of skin, everything woven of goat's hair and everythingmade of wood.'
21 Dijo el sacerdote Eleazar a los hombres de la tropa que habían ido a la guerra: «Este es el precepto de la Ley que ordenó Yahveh a Moisés.	21 The priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had come back from the campaign, 'This is an article ofthe Law which Yahweh prescribed to Moses:
22 El oro, la plata, el bronce, el hierro, el estaño y el plomo,	22 although gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,
23 todo lo que puede pasar por el fuego, lo pasaréis por el fuego y quedará puro. Pero será purificado con las aguas lustrales. Pero todo lo que no pueda pasar por el fuego lo pasaréis por las aguas.»	23 everything that can withstand fire can be cleaned by being passed through fire, it must stil bepurified with water for purification. Whatever cannot resist fire you must pass through water.
24 Lavaréis vuestros vestidos el día séptimo y quedaréis puros. Luego podréis entrar en el campamento.	24 'Wash your clothes on the seventh day and you wil then be clean. You may then re-enter the camp.'
25 Habló Yahveh a Moisés y le dijo:	25 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
26 «Sacad la cuenta, tú, el sacerdote Eleazar y los principales de las familias de la comunidad, del botín y de los cautivos, hombres y bestias.	26 'With the priest Eleazar and the heads of families in the community, take a count of the spoils andcaptives, human and animal.
27 Luego repartirás el botín, la mitad para los combatientes que fueron a la guerra y la otra mitad para toda la comunidad.	27 You wil then share out the spoil, half and half, between those who fought the campaign and the restof the community.
28 Reservarás para Yahveh, de la parte de los combatientes que fueron a la guerra, uno por cada quinientos, sean hombres, bueyes, asnos u ovejas.	28 From the share of the combatants who took part in the campaign, you wil set aside one out of everyfive hundred persons, oxen, donkeys and sheep as Yahweh's portion.
29 Lo tomarás de la mitad que les corresponde y se lo darás al sacerdote Eleazar, como reserva para Yahveh.	29 You wil take this from the half share coming to them and give it to the priest Eleazar as the portionset aside for Yahweh.
30 Y de la mitad de los israelitas, uno por cada cincuenta, sean hombres, bueyes, asnos u ovejas, cualquier clase de bestias, y se lo darás a los levitas, que están encargados del ministerio de la Morada de Yahveh.	30 From the half coming to the Israelites, you will take one out of every fifty persons, oxen, donkeys,sheep, and al other animals, and give them to the Levites who are responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing.'
31 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar hicieron como había mandado Yahveh a Moisés.	31 Moses and the priest Eleazar did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
32 Fue el botín, el remanente de lo que la gente de guerra había saqueado: 675.000 cabezas de ganado lanar,	32 The spoils, the remainder of the booty captured by the soldiers, came to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep and goats,
33 72.000 de vacuno	33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,
34 y 61.000 de ganado asnal.	34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,

38 36.000 de vacuno, siendo la parte de Yahveh 72,	38 thirty-six thousand head of cattle, of which Yahweh's portion was seventy-two,
39 30.500 de asnal, siendo la parte de Yahveh 61.	39 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, of which Yahweh's portion was sixty-one,
40 Las personas eran 16.000, correspondiendo a Yahveh, 32.	40 and sixteen thousand persons, of which Yahweh's portion was thirty-two.
41 Moisés dio al sacerdote Eleazar la reserva de Yahveh, como había ordenado Yahveh a Moisés.	41 Moses gave the priest Eleazar the portion set aside for Yahweh, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
42 La mitad perteneciente a los israelitas, que había separado Moisés de la de los combatientes,	42 As for the half coming to the Israelites which Moses had separated from that of the combatants,
43 esta mitad correspondiente a la comunidad era de 337.500 cabezas de ganado lanar;	43 this half, the community's share, came to three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundredsheep and goats,
44 36.000 de vacuno;	44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,
45 30.500 de asnal,	45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys
46 y 16.000 personas.	46 and sixteen thousand persons.
47 Tomó Moisés de la mitad de los israelitas, a razón de uno por cincuenta, hombres y bestias, y se los dio a los levitas, que se encargan del ministerio de la Morada de Yahveh, como había ordenado Yahveh a Moisés.	47 From this half, the Israelites' share, Moses took one out of every fifty, human and animal, and gavethem to the Levites who were responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
48 Se presentaron ante Moisés los jefes de las tropas de Israel que habían ido a la guerra, jefes de millar y jefes de cien,	48 The officers of the thousands who had fought the campaign, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, came to Moses
49 y dijeron a Moisés: «Tus siervos han sacado la cuenta de los combatientes que tenían a sus órdenes, y no falta ni uno.	49 and said, 'Your servants have numbered the soldiers under their command: none of our men ismissing.
50 Por eso traemos de ofrenda a Yahveh lo que cada uno de nosotros ha encontrado en objetos de oro, brazaletes, ajorcas, anillos, arracadas y collares, para hacer expiación por nosotros delante de Yahveh.»	50 So, as an offering for Yahweh, we have brought what each of us has found in the way of goldornaments, armlets and bracelets, rings, earrings and breastplates, to make expiation for ourselves beforeYahweh.'
51 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron de ellos el oro y las joyas.	51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, al this jewel ery.
52 El total del oro de la reserva que reservaron para Yahveh, de parte de los jefes de millar y de cien, fue 16.750 siclos.	52 This portion of gold given to Yahweh by the commanders of the thousands and commanders of thehundreds amounted to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53 Los combatientes habían tomado cada uno su botín.	53 Each of the soldiers took his own booty.
54 Pero Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron el oro de los jefes de millar y de cien y lo llevaron a la Tienda del Encuentro, para que sirviera ante Yahveh de memorial en favor de los israelitas.	54 But Moses and the priest Eleazar, having accepted the gold from the commanders of the thousandsand commanders of the hundreds, brought it into the Tent of Meeting, to be a reminder of the Israelites beforeYahweh.
