1 pues tu espíritu incorruptible está en todas ellas.	1 For thine incorruptible Spirit is in all things.
2 Por eso mismo gradualmente castigas a los que caen; les amonestas recordándoles en qué pecan para que, apartándose del mal, crean en ti, Señor.	2 Therefore chastenest thou them by little and little that offend, and warnest them by putting them in remembrance wherein they have offended, that leaving their wickedness they may believe on thee, O Lord.
3 A los antiguos habitantes de tu tierra santa	3 For it was thy will to destroy by the hands of our fathers both those old inhabitants of thy holy land,
4 los odiabas, porque cometían las más nefastas acciones, prácticas de hechicería, iniciaciones impías.	4 Whom thou hatedst for doing most odious works of witchcrafts, and wicked sacrifices;
5 A estos despiadados asesinos de sus hijos, devoradores de entrañas en banquetes de carne humana y de sangre, a estos iniciados en bacanales,	5 And also those merciless murderers of children, and devourers of man's flesh, and the feasts of blood,
6 padres asesinos de seres indefensos, habías querido destruirlos a manos de nuestros padres,	6 With their priests out of the midst of their idolatrous crew, and the parents, that killed with their own hands souls destitute of help:
7 para que la tierra que te era la más apreciada de todas, recibiera una digna colonia de hijos de Dios.	7 That the land, which thou esteemedst above all other, might receive a worthy colony of God's children.
8 Pero aun con éstos, por ser hombres, te mostraste indulgente, y les enviaste avispas, como precursoras de tu ejército, que les fuesen poco a poco destruyendo.	8 Nevertheless even those thou sparedst as men, and didst send wasps, forerunners of thine host, to destroy them by little and little.
9 No porque no pudieses en batalla campal entregar a los impíos en manos de los justos, o aniquilarlos de una vez con feroces fieras o con una palabra inexorable,	9 Not that thou wast unable to bring the ungodly under the hand of the righteous in battle, or to destroy them at once with cruel beasts, or with one rough word:
10 sino que les concedías, con un castigo gradual, una ocasión de arrepentirse; aun sabiendo que era su natural perverso, su malicia innata, y que jamás cambiaría su manera de pensar	10 But executing thy judgments upon them by little and little, thou gavest them place of repentance, not being ignorant that they were a naughty generation, and that their malice was bred in them, and that their cogitation would never be changed.
11 por ser desde el comienzo una raza maldita. Tampoco por temor a nadie concedías la impunidad a sus pecados.	11 For it was a cursed seed from the beginning; neither didst thou for fear of any man give them pardon for those things wherein they sinned.
12 Pues ¿quién podría decirte: «¿Qué has hecho?» ¿Quién se opondría a tu sentencia? ¿Quién te citaría a juicio por destruir naciones por ti creadas? ¿Quién se alzaría contra ti como vengador de hombres inicuos?	12 For who shall say, What hast thou done? or who shall withstand thy judgment? or who shall accuse thee for the nations that perish, whom thou made? or who shall come to stand against thee, to be revenged for the unrighteous men?
13 Pues fuera de ti no hay un Dios que de todas las cosas cuide, a quien tengas que dar cuenta de la justicia de tus juicios;	13 For neither is there any God but thou that careth for all, to whom thou mightest shew that thy judgment is not unright.
14 ni hay rey ni soberano que se te enfrente en favor de los que has castigado.	14 Neither shall king or tyrant be able to set his face against thee for any whom thou hast punished.
15 Sino que, como eres justo, con justicia administras el universo, y miras como extraño a tu poder condenar a quien no merece ser castigado.	15 Forsomuch then as thou art righteous thyself, thou orderest all things righteously: thinking it not agreeable with thy power to condemn him that hath not deserved to be punished.
16 Tu fuerza es el principio de tu justicia y tu señorío sobre todos los seres te hace indulgente con todos ellos	16 For thy power is the beginning of righteousness, and because thou art the Lord of all, it maketh thee to be gracious unto all.
17 Ostentas tu fuerza a los que no creen en la plenitud de tu poder, y confundes la audacia de los que la conocen.	17 For when men will not believe that thou art of a full power, thou shewest thy strength, and among them that know it thou makest their boldness manifest.
18 Dueño de tu fuerza, juzgas con moderación y nos gobiernas con mucha indulgencia porque, con sólo quererlo, lo puedes todo.	18 But thou, mastering thy power, judgest with equity, and orderest us with great favour: for thou mayest use power when thou wilt.
19 Obrando así enseñaste a tu pueblo que el justo debe ser amigo del hombre, y diste a tus hijos la buena esperanza de que, en el pecado, das lugar al arrepentimiento.	19 But by such works hast thou taught thy people that the just man should be merciful, and hast made thy children to be of a good hope that thou givest repentance for sins.
20 Pues si a los enemigos de tus hijos, merecedores de la muerte, con tanto miramiento e indulgencia los castigaste dándoles tiempo y lugar para apartarse de la maldad,	20 For if thou didst punish the enemies of thy children, and the condemned to death, with such deliberation, giving them time and place, whereby they might be delivered from their malice:
21 ¿con qué consideración no juzgaste a los hijos tuyos, a cuyos padres con juramentos y pactos tan buenas promesas hiciste?	21 With how great circumspection didst thou judge thine own sons, unto whose fathers thou hast sworn, and made covenants of good promises?
22 Así pues, para aleccionarnos, a nuestros enemigos los flagelas con moderación, para que, al juzgar, tengamos en cuenta tu bondad y, al ser juzgados, esperemos tu misericordia.	22 Therefore, whereas thou dost chasten us, thou scourgest our enemies a thousand times more, to the intent that, when we judge, we should carefully think of thy goodness, and when we ourselves are judged, we should look for mercy.
23 Por tanto, también a los que inicuamente habían vivido una vida insensata les atormentaste con sus mismas abominaciones.	23 Wherefore, whereas men have lived dissolutely and unrighteously, thou hast tormented them with their own abominations.
24 Demasiado, en verdad, se habían desviado por los caminos del error, teniendo por dioses a los más viles y despreciables, animales, dejándose engañar como pequeñuelos inconscientes.	24 For they went astray very far in the ways of error, and held them for gods, which even among the beasts of their enemies were despised, being deceived, as children of no understanding.
25 Por eso, como a niños sin seso, les enviaste una irrisión de castigo.	25 Therefore unto them, as to children without the use of reason, thou didst send a judgment to mock them.
26 Pero los que con una reprimenda irrisoria no se enmendaron, iban a experimentar un castigo digno de Dios.	26 But they that would not be reformed by that correction, wherein he dallied with them, shall feel a judgment worthy of God.
27 A la vista de los seres que les atormentaban y les indignaban, de aquellos seres que tenían por dioses y eran ahora su castigo, abrieron los ojos y reconocieron por el Dios verdadero a aquel que antes se negaban a conocer. Por lo cual el supremo castigo descargó sobre ellos.	27 For, look, for what things they grudged, when they were punished, that is, for them whom they thought to be gods; [now] being punished in them, when they saw it, they acknowledged him to be the true God, whom before they denied to know: and therefore came extreme damnation upon them.
