Every high priest is taken from among human beings and is appointed to act on their behalf inrelationships with God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins;1 כִּי כָּל־כֹּהֵן גָּדוֹל הַלָּקוּחַ מִתּוֹךְ בְּנֵי־אָדָם מֻפְקָד הוּא בַּעֲבוּר בְּנֵי אָדָם בְּעִנְיְנֵי אֱלֹהִים לְהַקְרִיב מִנְחָה וָזֶבַח עַל־הַחֲטָאִים
he can sympathise with those who are ignorant or who have gone astray, because he too is subject tothe limitations of weakness.2 וְהוּא יָכוֹל לַחְמֹל עַל־הַשֹּׁגְגִים וְהַתֹּעִים בִּהְיוֹתוֹ גַם־הוּא יְדוּעַ חֹלִי
That is why he has to make sin offerings for himself as wel as for the people.3 אֲשֶׁר־עַל־כֵּן חַיָּב לְהַקְרִיב עַל־הַחֲטָאִים גַּם בְּעַד־הָעָם גַּם בְּעַד־נַפְשׁוֹ
No one takes this honour on himself; it needs a cal from God, as in Aaron's case.4
And so it was not Christ who gave himself the glory of becoming high priest, but the one who said tohim: You are my Son, today I have fathered you,5 כֵּן גַּם־הַמָּשִׁיחַ לֹא־כִבֵּד אֶת־עַצְמוֹ לִהְיוֹת כֹּהֵן גָּדוֹל כִּי אִם־הָאֹמֵר אֵלָיו בְּנִי אַתָּה אֲנִי הַיּוֹם יְלִדְתִּיךָ
and in another text: You are a priest for ever, of the order of Melchizedek.6 כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר גַּם־בְּמָקוֹם אַחֵר אַתָּה כֹהֵן לְעוֹלָם עַל־דִּבְרָתִי מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶק
During his life on earth, he offered up prayer and entreaty, with loud cries and with tears, to the onewho had the power to save him from death, and, winning a hearing by his reverence,7 אֲשֶׁר בִּימֵי הֱיוֹתוֹ בַבָּשָׂר הִקְרִיב תְּפִלּוֹת וְתַחֲנוּנִים בִּצְעָקָה גְדוֹלָה וּבִדְמָעוֹת לִפְנֵי מִי־שֶׁיָּכוֹל לְהוֹשִׁיעוֹ מִמָּוֶת וַיֵּעָתֶר־לוֹ מִפְּנֵי יִרְאָתוֹ
he learnt obedience, Son though he was, through his sufferings;8 וְאַף כִּי־הָיָה הַבֵּן לָמַד מֵעֻנּוֹתוֹ לִשְׁמוֹעַ
when he had been perfected, he became for al who obey him the source of eternal salvation9 וְאַחֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר הֻשְׁלַם הָיָה מַמְצִיא תְּשׁוּעַת עוֹלָמִים לְכָל־שֹׁמְעָיו
and was acclaimed by God with the title of high priest of the order of Melchizedek.10 וְהָאֱלֹהִים קָרָא־לוֹ כֹּהֵן גָּדוֹל עַל־דִּבְרָתִי מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶק
On this subject we have many things to say, and they are difficult to explain because you have grownso slow at understanding.11 עַל־זֹאת יֶשׁ־לָנוּ לְדַבֵּר הַרְבֵּה וְקָשׁוֹת לְבַאֵר לָכֶם בְּמִלִּין יַעַן כִּי־כָבְדוּ אָזְנֵיכֶם
Indeed, when you should by this time have become masters, you need someone to teach you al overagain the elements of the principles of God's sayings; you have gone back to needing milk, and not solid food.12 כִּי תַּחַת אֲשֶׁר הָיָה רָאוּי לָכֶם לְפִי־אֹרֶךְ הַזְּמָן לִהְיוֹת מְלַמְּדִים עַתָּה מִן־הַצֹּרֶךְ לָשׁוּב וּלְלַמֵּד אֶתְכֶם עִקְּרֵי רֵאשִׁית דִּבְרֵי אֱלֹהִים וְנִצְרַכְתֶּם לְחָלָב וְלֹא לְמַאֲכָל בָּרִיא
Truly, no one who is stil living on milk can digest the doctrine of saving justice, being stil a baby.13 כִּי כֹל אֲשֶׁר מַאֲכָלוֹ חָלָב אֵינֶנּוּ מֵבִין בִּדְבַר־צֶדֶק כִּי־עוֹדֶנּוּ עוֹלֵל
Solid food is for adults with minds trained by practice to distinguish between good and bad.14 אַךְ לַשְּׁלֵמִים הַמַּאֲכָל הַבָּרִיא אֲשֶׁר עַל־פִּי הַהַרְגֵל יֵשׁ לָהֶם חוּשִׁים מְנֻסִּים לְהַבְדִּיל בֵּין־טוֹב לָרָע
