That is why al you who are holy brothers and share the same heavenly cal should turn your minds toJesus, the apostle and the high priest of our profession of faith.1 לָכֵן אַחַי הַקְּדוֹשִׁים חֲבֵרִים לַקְּרִיאָה שֶׁל־מַעְלָה הַבִּיטוּ אֶל־הַשָּׁלִיחַ וְכֹהֵן הוֹדָיָתֵנוּ הַגָּדוֹל אֶל־הַמָּשִׁיחַ יֵשׁוּעַ
He was trustworthy to the one who appointed him, just like Moses, who remained trustworthy in all hishousehold;2
but he deserves a greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house is more honoured than thehouse itself.3 כִּי־כָבוֹד גָּדוֹל מִמּשֶׁה נָחַל־זֶה כַּאֲשֶׁר בֹּנֵה הַבַּיִת חָשׁוּב יוֹתֵר מִן־הַבָּיִת
Every house is built by someone, of course; but God built everything that exists.4
It is true that Moses was trustworthy in the household of God, as a servant is, acting as witness to thethings which were yet to be revealed,5 וְהֵן משֶׁה נֶאֱמָן בְּכָל־בֵּיתוֹ כְּעֶבֶד לְעֵדוּת הַדְּבָרִים הָעֲתִידִים לְהֵאָמֵר
but Christ is trustworthy as a son is, over his household. And we are his household, as long as wefearlessly maintain the hope in which we glory.6 אֲבָל הַמָּשִׁיחַ הוּא הַבֵּן עַל־בֵּיתוֹ וַאֲנַחְנוּ בֵיתוֹ אִם־נַחֲזִיק בַּבִּטָּחוֹן וּבִתְהִלַּת הַתִּקְוָה וְלֹא־נַרְפֶּנָּה עַד־הַקֵּץ
That is why, as the Holy Spirit says: If only you would listen to him today!7
Do not harden your hearts, as at the rebel ion, as at the time of testing in the desert,8
when your ancestors chal enged me, and put me to the test, and saw what I could do9 אֲשֶׁר נִסּוּנִי אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם בְּחָנוּנִי גַּם־רָאוּ פָעֳלִי אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה
for forty years. That was why that generation sickened me and I said, 'Always fickle hearts, thatcannot grasp my ways!'10 לָכֵן אָקוּט בַּדּוֹר וָאֹמַר עַם תֹּעֵי לֵבָב הֵם וְהֵם לֹא־יָדְעוּ דְרָכָי
And then in my anger I swore that they would never enter my place of rest.11
Take care, brothers, that none of you ever has a wicked heart, so unbelieving as to turn away from theliving God.12 רְאוּ עַתָּה אֶחָי פֶּן־יֵשׁ בְּאֶחָד מִכֶּם לֶב־רַע וַחֲסַר אֱמוּנָה לָסוּר מֵאֱלֹהִים חַיִּים
Every day, as long as this today lasts, keep encouraging one another so that none of you is hardenedby the lure of sin,13 אַךְ־הוֹכֵחַ תּוֹכִיחוּ אִישׁ אֶת־רֵעֵהוּ יוֹם יוֹם עַד־שֶׁיִּקָּרֵא הַיּוֹם לְמַעַן אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יַקְשֶׁה אִישׁ מִכֶּם אֶת־לִבּוֹ בְּמַדּוּחֵי פָשַׁע
because we have been granted a share with Christ only if we keep the grasp of our first confidencefirm to the end.14 כִּי נִתְחַבַּרְנוּ לַמָּשִׁיחַ אִם־נַחֲזִיק בְּרֵאשִׁית הַבִּטְחָה וְלֹא נַרְפֶּנָּה עַד־הַקֵּץ
In this saying: If only you would listen to him today; do not harden your hearts, as at the Rebel ion,15
who was it who listened and then rebelled? Surely al those whom Moses led out of Egypt.16 מִי אֵפוֹא אֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר שָׁמְעוּ וַיָּרִיבוּ הֲלֹא כָּל־יֹצְאֵי מִצְרַיִם בְּיַד־משֶׁה
And with whom was he angry for forty years? Surely with those who sinned and whose dead bodiesfel in the desert.17 וּבְמִי הִתְקוֹטֵט אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה הֲלֹא בַחַטָּאִים אֲשֶׁר נָפְלוּ פִגְרֵיהֶם בַּמִּדְבָּר
To whom did he swear they would never enter his place of rest? Surely those who would not believe.18
So we see that it was their refusal to believe which prevented them from entering.19
