Joshua 5

1 When al the kings of the Amorites living to westward across the Jordan, and al the kings of theCanaanites living on the seaboard, heard that Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan before theIsraelites until they had crossed, their hearts failed and they lost al courage to resist the Israelites.	1 Or quando tutti i re degli Amorrei che abitavano di là dal Giordano, a occidente, e tutti i re di Canaan che posse devano i luoghi vicini al Mar Grande, ebbero udito che il Signore aveva seccato la corrente del Giordano dinanzi ai figli d'Israele, finché fossero passati, si sbigottirono e si persero di coraggio, spaventati dall'arrivo dei figli d'Israele.
2 At this time Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again (a secondtime).	2 Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: « Fatti dei coltelli di pietra, e circoncidi di nuovo i figli d'Israele ».
3 Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites on the Hil of Foreskins.	3 Egli eseguendo l'ordine del Signore, circoncise i figli d'Israele sul colle della circoncisione.
4 The reason why Joshua circumcised them was this. Al the males of the people who had come out ofEgypt of age to bear arms had died in the desert on their journey after leaving Egypt.	4 La ragione di questa seconda circoncisione fu che tutti i maschi del popolo usciti dall'Egitto, tutti gli uomini d'armi eran morti nel deserto, nei lunghissimi giri del viaggio.
5 Now, al the people who came out had been circumcised; but none of those born in the desert, duringthe journey, after leaving Egypt, had been circumcised;	5 Essi erano stati circoncisi; ma il popolo nato nel deserto,
6 for the Israelites walked the desert for forty years, until the whole nation had died out, that is, the menwho had come out of Egypt of age to bear arms; they had not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and Yahweh hadsworn to them never to let them see the land which he had sworn to their ancestors that he would give us, a landflowing with milk and honey.	6 nei quarantanni di viaggio per quella vastissima solitudine, rimase incirconciso. Finiti che furono coloro che non avevano ascoltato la voce del Signore, quelli a cui Egli aveva giurato di non far loro vedere la terra stillante latte e miele,
7 But in place of these he set their sons, and these were the ones whom Joshua circumcised: they wereuncircumcised because they had not been circumcised during the journey.	7 i figli di questi, succeduti nel luogo dei loro padri, furon circoncisi da Giosuè: erano incirconcisi, quali eran nati, chè nessuno li aveva circoncisi nel viaggio.
8 When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they stayed resting in the camp till they werewel again.	8 E dopo che furono tutti circoncisi, restarono accampati nel medesimo luogo, fino a tanto che non fossero guariti.
9 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Today I have taken the shame of Egypt away from you.' Hence, the placehas been cal ed Gilgal ever since.	9 E il Signore disse a Giosuè: « Oggi io ho tolto da voi l'obbrobrio d'Egitto ». E fu dato a quel luogo il nome di Galgala fino al presente.
10 The Israelites pitched their camp at Gilgal and kept the Passover there on the fourteenth day of themonth, at evening, in the plain of Jericho.	10 I figli d'Israele rimasero in Galgala, e ai quattordici del mese, verso sera, fecero la pasqua nelle pianure di Gerico,
11 On the very next day after the Passover, they ate what the land produced, unleavened bread androasted ears of corn.	11 Il dì seguente mangiarono dei frutti della terra, pani azzimi e paste del grano di quell'anno.
12 The manna stopped the day after they had eaten the produce of the land. The Israelites from that yearonwards ate the produce of Canaan and had no more manna.	12 E allora, dopo che ebbero mangiato dei frutti della terra, la manna cessò, e i figli d'Israele non usaron più tal cibo; ma si cibarono dei frutti della terra di Canaan di quello stesso anno.
13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him, grasping anaked sword. Joshua walked towards him and said to him, 'Are you on our side or on that of our enemies?'	13 Or trovandosi Giosuè nei dintorni di Gerico, alzati gli occhi, vide davanti a sè ritto un uomo colla spada sguainata. Giosuè, andatogli incontro, gli disse: « Sei dei nostri, o dei nemici? »
14 He replied, 'On neither side. I have come now as the captain of the army of Yahweh.' Joshua fel on hisface to the ground, worshipping him, and said, 'What has my Lord to say to his servant?'	14 E quello rispose: « No: io sono il principe dell'esercito del Signore, ed ora vengo ».
15 The captain of the army of Yahweh answered Joshua, 'Take your sandals off your feet, for the placewhere you are standing is holy.' And Joshua did so.	15 Giosuè cadde bocconi per terra, l'adorò e disse: « Che cosa il mio Signore ha da dire al suo servo? »
	16 Sciogli, disse, dai tuoi piedi i calzari, perchè il luogo dove stai è santo ». E Giosuè fece come gli era stato ordinato.
