Joshua 5

1 When al the kings of the Amorites living to westward across the Jordan, and al the kings of theCanaanites living on the seaboard, heard that Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan before theIsraelites until they had crossed, their hearts failed and they lost al courage to resist the Israelites.	1 Quando adunque tutti i re degli Amorrhei abitanti di là dal Giordano verso occidente, e tutti i re di Canaan, che eran signori de' luoghi vicini al mar grande, ebbero udito, come il Signore avea asciugata la corrente del Giordano dinanzi a' figliuoli d'Israele, finchè fosser passati, si sbigottiron di cuore, e non rimase in essi vigore pella paura dell'arrivo de’ figliuoli d'Israele.
2 At this time Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again (a secondtime).	2 Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: Fatti de' coltelli di pietra, e di nuovo circoncidi i figliuoli d'Israele.
3 Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites on the Hil of Foreskins.	3 Fece egli il comando del Signore, e circoncise i figliuoli d'Israele sul colle della circoncisione.
4 The reason why Joshua circumcised them was this. Al the males of the people who had come out ofEgypt of age to bear arms had died in the desert on their journey after leaving Egypt.	4 Or ecco il motivo della seconda circoncisione: Tutto il popolo di sesso mascolino che uscì dall'Egitto, tutti gli uomini atti alle armi perirono nel deserto nel giro lunghissimo de' loro viaggi;
5 Now, al the people who came out had been circumcised; but none of those born in the desert, duringthe journey, after leaving Egypt, had been circumcised;	5 E questi erano tutti circoncisi. Ma il popolo nato nel deserto
6 for the Israelites walked the desert for forty years, until the whole nation had died out, that is, the menwho had come out of Egypt of age to bear arms; they had not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and Yahweh hadsworn to them never to let them see the land which he had sworn to their ancestors that he would give us, a landflowing with milk and honey.	6 Ne' quarant’anni di viaggio per quella vastissima solitudine rimase incirconciso, per sino a tanto che fossero consunti coloro che non avevano ascoltato le voci del Signore, e a' quali avea prima giurato di non far loro vedere la terra, che scorreva latte e miele.
7 But in place of these he set their sons, and these were the ones whom Joshua circumcised: they wereuncircumcised because they had not been circumcised during the journey.	7 Succedettero i figliuoli di questi nel luogo de' padri loro, e furono circoncisi da Giosuè: perocché erano incirconcisi, quali eran nati, e nissuno gli avea circoncisi nel viaggio.
8 When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they stayed resting in the camp till they werewel again.	8 E circoncisi che furon tutti, restarono cogli alloggiamenti nel medesimo luogo, fino a tanto che fosser guariti.
9 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Today I have taken the shame of Egypt away from you.' Hence, the placehas been cal ed Gilgal ever since.	9 E il Signore disse a Giosuè: Oggi io ho levato da voi l’obbrobrio d'Egitto. E fu dato a quel luogo il nome di Galgala, come anche in oggi si appella.
10 The Israelites pitched their camp at Gilgal and kept the Passover there on the fourteenth day of themonth, at evening, in the plain of Jericho.	10 E si fermarono i figliuoli d'Israele in Galgala, e vi fecer la Pasqua a' quattordici del mese alla sera nelle pianure di Gerico:
11 On the very next day after the Passover, they ate what the land produced, unleavened bread androasted ears of corn.	11 E il dì seguente mangiarono i pani azzimi fatti di frumento del paese, e la farina dello stesso anno.
12 The manna stopped the day after they had eaten the produce of the land. The Israelites from that yearonwards ate the produce of Canaan and had no more manna.	12 E mancò la manna dopoché ebber mangiato de' frutti della terra, e non usaron più di tal cibo i figliuoli d'Israele; ma si cibarono delle biade della terra di Canaan nate lo stesso anno.
13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him, grasping anaked sword. Joshua walked towards him and said to him, 'Are you on our side or on that of our enemies?'	13 Or trovandosi Giosuè ne' contorni della città di Gerico, alzò gli occhi, e vide dirimpetto a sé un uomo in piedi colla spada sguainata, e andò verso di lui, e gli disse: Se' tu de' nostri, o de' nemici?
14 He replied, 'On neither side. I have come now as the captain of the army of Yahweh.' Joshua fel on hisface to the ground, worshipping him, and said, 'What has my Lord to say to his servant?'	14 E quegli rispose: No, ma io sono il principe dell'esercito del Signore, e ora io vengo…
15 The captain of the army of Yahweh answered Joshua, 'Take your sandals off your feet, for the placewhere you are standing is holy.' And Joshua did so.	15 Cadde Giosuè boccone per terra, e adorandolo disse: Che è quello che il mio Signore dice al suo servo?
	16 Sciogli (diss’egli) i tuoi calzari da' tuoi piedi: perocché il luogo, dove tu stai, è santo. E Giosuè fece come gli era ordinato.
