Joshua 5

1 When al the kings of the Amorites living to westward across the Jordan, and al the kings of theCanaanites living on the seaboard, heard that Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan before theIsraelites until they had crossed, their hearts failed and they lost al courage to resist the Israelites.	1 Quando tutti i re degli Amorrei, a occidente del Giordano, e tutti i re dei Cananei, lungo il mare, vennero a sapere che il Signore aveva prosciugato le acque del Giordano davanti agli Israeliti, al loro passaggio, si sentirono venir meno il cuore e rimasero senza coraggio davanti agli Israeliti.
2 At this time Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again (a secondtime).	2 In quel tempo il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Fatti coltelli di selce e fa’ una nuova circoncisione agli Israeliti».
3 Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites on the Hil of Foreskins.	3 Giosuè si fece coltelli di selce e circoncise gli Israeliti al colle dei Prepuzi.
4 The reason why Joshua circumcised them was this. Al the males of the people who had come out ofEgypt of age to bear arms had died in the desert on their journey after leaving Egypt.	4 La ragione di questa circoncisione praticata da Giosuè è la seguente: tutto il popolo uscito dall’Egitto, i maschi, tutti gli uomini atti alla guerra, erano morti nel deserto dopo l’uscita dall’Egitto.
5 Now, al the people who came out had been circumcised; but none of those born in the desert, duringthe journey, after leaving Egypt, had been circumcised;	5 Tutti coloro che erano usciti erano circoncisi, mentre tutti coloro che erano nati nel deserto, dopo l’uscita dall’Egitto, non erano circoncisi.
6 for the Israelites walked the desert for forty years, until the whole nation had died out, that is, the menwho had come out of Egypt of age to bear arms; they had not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and Yahweh hadsworn to them never to let them see the land which he had sworn to their ancestors that he would give us, a landflowing with milk and honey.	6 Quarant’anni infatti avevano camminato gli Israeliti nel deserto, finché non fu estinta tutta la generazione degli uomini idonei alla guerra, usciti dall’Egitto; essi non avevano ascoltato la voce del Signore e il Signore aveva giurato di non far loro vedere quella terra che il Signore aveva giurato ai loro padri di darci, terra dove scorrono latte e miele.
7 But in place of these he set their sons, and these were the ones whom Joshua circumcised: they wereuncircumcised because they had not been circumcised during the journey.	7 Al loro posto suscitò i loro figli e Giosuè circoncise costoro; non erano infatti circoncisi, perché non era stata fatta la circoncisione durante il viaggio.
8 When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they stayed resting in the camp till they werewel again.	8 Quando si terminò di circoncidere tutti, rimasero a riposo nell’accampamento fino al loro ristabilimento.
9 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Today I have taken the shame of Egypt away from you.' Hence, the placehas been cal ed Gilgal ever since.	9 Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Oggi ho allontanato da voi l’infamia dell’Egitto». Quel luogo si chiama Gàlgala fino ad oggi.
10 The Israelites pitched their camp at Gilgal and kept the Passover there on the fourteenth day of themonth, at evening, in the plain of Jericho.	10 Gli Israeliti rimasero accampati a Gàlgala e celebrarono la Pasqua al quattordici del mese, alla sera, nelle steppe di Gerico.
11 On the very next day after the Passover, they ate what the land produced, unleavened bread androasted ears of corn.	11 Il giorno dopo la Pasqua mangiarono i prodotti della terra, azzimi e frumento abbrustolito in quello stesso giorno.
12 The manna stopped the day after they had eaten the produce of the land. The Israelites from that yearonwards ate the produce of Canaan and had no more manna.	12 E a partire dal giorno seguente, come ebbero mangiato i prodotti della terra, la manna cessò. Gli Israeliti non ebbero più manna; quell’anno mangiarono i frutti della terra di Canaan.
13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him, grasping anaked sword. Joshua walked towards him and said to him, 'Are you on our side or on that of our enemies?'	13 Quando fu presso Gerico, Giosuè alzò gli occhi e vide un uomo in piedi davanti a sé, che aveva in mano una spada sguainata. Giosuè si diresse verso di lui e gli chiese: «Tu sei dei nostri o dei nostri nemici?».
14 He replied, 'On neither side. I have come now as the captain of the army of Yahweh.' Joshua fel on hisface to the ground, worshipping him, and said, 'What has my Lord to say to his servant?'	14 Rispose: «No, io sono il capo dell’esercito del Signore. Giungo proprio ora». Allora Giosuè cadde con la faccia a terra, si prostrò e gli disse: «Che ha da dire il mio signore al suo servo?».
15 The captain of the army of Yahweh answered Joshua, 'Take your sandals off your feet, for the placewhere you are standing is holy.' And Joshua did so.	15 Rispose il capo dell’esercito del Signore a Giosuè: «Togliti i sandali dai tuoi piedi, perché il luogo sul quale tu stai è santo». Giosuè così fece.
