NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
When al the kings of the Amorites living to westward across the Jordan, and al the kings of theCanaanites living on the seaboard, heard that Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan before theIsraelites until they had crossed, their hearts failed and they lost al courage to resist the Israelites.1 Postquam ergo audierunt om nes reges Amorraeorum, qui ha bitabant trans Iordanem ad occidentalem plagam, et cuncti reges Chanaan, qui propinqua possidebant Magno mari loca, quod siccasset Dominus fluenta Iordanis coram filiis Israel, donec transirent, dissolutum est cor eorum, et non remansit in eis spiritus coram filiis Israel.
At this time Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again (a secondtime).2 Eo tempore ait Dominus ad Iosue: “ Fac tibi cultros lapideos et circumcide iterum secundo filios Israel ”.
Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites on the Hil of Foreskins.3 Fecit, quod iusserat Dominus, et circumcidit filios Israel in colle Praeputiorum.
The reason why Joshua circumcised them was this. Al the males of the people who had come out ofEgypt of age to bear arms had died in the desert on their journey after leaving Egypt.4 Haec autem causa est secundae circumcisionis: omnis populus, qui egressus est ex Aegypto, generis masculini, universi bellatores viri mortui sunt in deserto in via;
Now, al the people who came out had been circumcised; but none of those born in the desert, duringthe journey, after leaving Egypt, had been circumcised;5 qui omnes circumcisi erant. Populus autem, qui natus est in deserto, incircumcisus fuit.
for the Israelites walked the desert for forty years, until the whole nation had died out, that is, the menwho had come out of Egypt of age to bear arms; they had not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and Yahweh hadsworn to them never to let them see the land which he had sworn to their ancestors that he would give us, a landflowing with milk and honey.6 Per quadraginta enim annos ambulabant filii Israel, donec consumerentur omnes homines bellatores, qui non audierant vocem Domini, et quibus iuraverat, ut non ostenderet eis terram, super qua iuraverat patribus eorum, ut daret illis terram lacte et melle manantem.
But in place of these he set their sons, and these were the ones whom Joshua circumcised: they wereuncircumcised because they had not been circumcised during the journey.7 Horum filii in locum successerunt patrum et circumcisi sunt a Iosue, quia, sicut nati fuerant, in praeputio erant, nec eos in via aliquis circumciderat.
When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they stayed resting in the camp till they werewel again.8 Postquam autem omnes circumcisi sunt, manserunt in eodem castrorum loco, donec sanarentur.
Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Today I have taken the shame of Egypt away from you.' Hence, the placehas been cal ed Gilgal ever since.9 Dixitque Dominus ad Iosue: “ Hodie abstuli opprobrium Aegypti a vobis ”. Vocatumque est nomen loci illius Galgala usque in praesentem diem.
The Israelites pitched their camp at Gilgal and kept the Passover there on the fourteenth day of themonth, at evening, in the plain of Jericho.10 Manseruntque filii Israel in Galgalis et fecerunt Pascha quarta decima die mensis ad vesperum in campestribus Iericho;
On the very next day after the Passover, they ate what the land produced, unleavened bread androasted ears of corn.11 et comederunt de frugibus terrae a die altero, azymos panes et polentam hoc ipso die.
The manna stopped the day after they had eaten the produce of the land. The Israelites from that yearonwards ate the produce of Canaan and had no more manna.12 Defecitque manna a die sequenti, postquam comederunt de frugibus terrae, nec usi sunt ultra cibo illo filii Israel, sed comederunt de frugibus terrae Chanaan in anno illo.
Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him, grasping anaked sword. Joshua walked towards him and said to him, 'Are you on our side or on that of our enemies?'13 Cum autem esset Iosue in agro urbis Iericho, levavit oculos et vidit virum stantem contra se et evaginatum tenentem gladium; perrexitque ad eum et ait: “ Noster es an adversariorum? ”.
He replied, 'On neither side. I have come now as the captain of the army of Yahweh.' Joshua fel on hisface to the ground, worshipping him, and said, 'What has my Lord to say to his servant?'14 Qui respondit: “ Nequaquam, sed sum princeps exercitus Domini et nunc veni ”.
The captain of the army of Yahweh answered Joshua, 'Take your sandals off your feet, for the placewhere you are standing is holy.' And Joshua did so.15 Cecidit Iosue pronus in terram et adorans ait: “ Quid Dominus meus loquitur ad servum suum? ”.
Et dixit princeps exercitus Domini ad Iosue: “ Solve calceamentum de pedibus tuis; locus enim, in quo stas, sanctus est ”. Fecitque Iosue, ut sibi fuerat imperatum.
