Joshua 5

1 When al the kings of the Amorites living to westward across the Jordan, and al the kings of theCanaanites living on the seaboard, heard that Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan before theIsraelites until they had crossed, their hearts failed and they lost al courage to resist the Israelites.	1 - Ora come tutti i re degli Amorrei, che abitavano al di là del Giordano ad occidente, e tutti i re di Canaan, che possedevano le località vicine al Gran Mare intesero che il Signore aveva asciugato il letto del Giordano dinanzi a' figli d'Israele, finchè non furon passati, si perdettero d'animo e non ebbero più coraggio per paura dell'entrata dei figli d'Israele.
2 At this time Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again (a secondtime).	2 In quel tempo disse il Signore a Giosuè: «Preparati de' coltelli di pietra e circoncidi una seconda volta i figli d'Israele».
3 Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites on the Hil of Foreskins.	3 Fece egli quanto gli aveva ordinato il Signore e circoncise i figli d'Israele sul colle della circoncisione.
4 The reason why Joshua circumcised them was this. Al the males of the people who had come out ofEgypt of age to bear arms had died in the desert on their journey after leaving Egypt.	4 Questo è il motivo della seconda circoncisione: tutti i maschi del popolo uscito dall'Egitto, tutti i combattenti eran morti nel deserto durante la lunghissima peregrinazione.
5 Now, al the people who came out had been circumcised; but none of those born in the desert, duringthe journey, after leaving Egypt, had been circumcised;	5 Tutti costoro eran circoncisi; mentre tutto il popolo nato nel deserto,
6 for the Israelites walked the desert for forty years, until the whole nation had died out, that is, the menwho had come out of Egypt of age to bear arms; they had not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and Yahweh hadsworn to them never to let them see the land which he had sworn to their ancestors that he would give us, a landflowing with milk and honey.	6 durante i quarant'anni di vita errabonda in quella vastissima solitudine, non era stato circonciso, fino a tanto che non furon morti quelli che non avevano ascoltato la voce del Signore e contro i quali era stato giurato che non sarebbe stata mostrata ad essi la terra dove scorre latte e miele.
7 But in place of these he set their sons, and these were the ones whom Joshua circumcised: they wereuncircumcised because they had not been circumcised during the journey.	7 A costoro eran succeduti i loro figli e questi vennero circoncisi da Giosuè, perchè erano ancora come quando nacquero nè erano stati circoncisi da alcuno durante il viaggio.
8 When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they stayed resting in the camp till they werewel again.	8 Ricevuta la circoncisione, rimasero accampati nello stesso luogo fino a guarigione completa.
9 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Today I have taken the shame of Egypt away from you.' Hence, the placehas been cal ed Gilgal ever since.	9 Il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Oggi ho tolto da voi l'obbrobrio dell'Egitto». E quel luogo venne chiamato "Galgala", nome che dura fino a questi giorni.
10 The Israelites pitched their camp at Gilgal and kept the Passover there on the fourteenth day of themonth, at evening, in the plain of Jericho.	10 I figli d'Israele si fermarono in Galgala e vi fecero la Pasqua nel decimoquarto giorno del mese, verso sera, nella pianura di Gerico
11 On the very next day after the Passover, they ate what the land produced, unleavened bread androasted ears of corn.	11 e nel giorno seguente mangiarono dei prodotti del suolo, pani azzimi e grano tostato raccolto in quello stesso anno.
12 The manna stopped the day after they had eaten the produce of the land. The Israelites from that yearonwards ate the produce of Canaan and had no more manna.	12 E la manna venne a mancare, dopo che ebbero mangiato dei prodotti del suolo e i figli d'Israele non ebbero più manna da mangiare, ma si nutrirono coi prodotti dell'anno in corso raccolti nella terra di Canaan.
13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him, grasping anaked sword. Joshua walked towards him and said to him, 'Are you on our side or on that of our enemies?'	13 Mentre Giosuè si trovava nel territorio della città di Gerico, alzò gli occhi e si vide dinanzi un uomo con in mano la spada sguainata. Mossogli incontro, gli domandò: «Sei tu dei nostri o dei nemici?».
14 He replied, 'On neither side. I have come now as the captain of the army of Yahweh.' Joshua fel on hisface to the ground, worshipping him, and said, 'What has my Lord to say to his servant?'	14 Ed avendo egli risposto: «No, ma sono un principe dell'esercito del Signore e arrivo in questo momento»;
15 The captain of the army of Yahweh answered Joshua, 'Take your sandals off your feet, for the placewhere you are standing is holy.' And Joshua did so.	15 Giosuè cadde con la faccia a terra e l'adorò, dicendo: «Che cosa comanda il mio Signore al suo servo?».
	16 «Slegati» gli rispose «i calzari dei piedi, perchè il luogo dove stai è santo». Giosuè fece quanto gli era stato imposto.
