Joshua 5

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 When al the kings of the Amorites living to westward across the Jordan, and al the kings of theCanaanites living on the seaboard, heard that Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan before theIsraelites until they had crossed, their hearts failed and they lost al courage to resist the Israelites.	1 Lorsque tous les rois des Amorites qui habitaient au-delà du Jourdain, vers l'ouest, et tous les rois desCananéens qui habitaient face à la mer apprirent que Yahvé avait asséché les eaux du Jourdain devant lesIsraélites, jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient passés, le coeur leur manqua et ils perdirent courage devant les Israélites.
2 At this time Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again (a secondtime).	2 En ce temps-là, Yahvé dit à Josué: "Fais-toi des couteaux de silex, et circoncis de nouveau lesIsraélites (une seconde fois").
3 Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites on the Hil of Foreskins.	3 Josué se fit des couteaux de silex et circoncit les Israélites sur le Tertre des Prépuces.
4 The reason why Joshua circumcised them was this. Al the males of the people who had come out ofEgypt of age to bear arms had died in the desert on their journey after leaving Egypt.	4 Voici la raison pour laquelle Josué fit cette circoncision: toute la population mâle, sortie d'Egypte enâge de porter les armes, était morte dans le désert, en chemin, après leur sortie d'Egypte.
5 Now, al the people who came out had been circumcised; but none of those born in the desert, duringthe journey, after leaving Egypt, had been circumcised;	5 Or, tout ce peuple émigré avait été circoncis; mais tout le peuple né dans le désert, en chemin, aprèsleur sortie d'Egypte, on ne l'avait pas circoncis;
6 for the Israelites walked the desert for forty years, until the whole nation had died out, that is, the menwho had come out of Egypt of age to bear arms; they had not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and Yahweh hadsworn to them never to let them see the land which he had sworn to their ancestors that he would give us, a landflowing with milk and honey.	6 car pendant 40 ans les Israélites marchèrent dans le désert, jusqu'à ce que toute la nation eût péri, àsavoir les hommes sortis d'Egypte en âge de porter les armes; ils n'avaient pas obéi à la voix de Yahvé, et Yahvéleur avait juré de ne pas leur laisser voir la terre qu'il avait juré à leurs pères de nous donner, terre qui ruisselle delait et de miel.
7 But in place of these he set their sons, and these were the ones whom Joshua circumcised: they wereuncircumcised because they had not been circumcised during the journey.	7 Quant à leurs fils, il les établit à leur place, et ce sont eux que Josué circoncit: ils étaient incirconcis,car on ne les avait pas circoncis en chemin.
8 When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they stayed resting in the camp till they werewel again.	8 Lorsqu'on eut achevé de circoncire toute la nation, ils restèrent sur place dans le camp jusqu'à leurguérison.
9 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Today I have taken the shame of Egypt away from you.' Hence, the placehas been cal ed Gilgal ever since.	9 Alors Yahvé dit à Josué: "Aujourd'hui j'ai ôté de dessus vous le déshonneur de l'Egypte." Aussi a-t-onappelé ce lieu du nom de Gilgal jusqu'aujourd'hui.
10 The Israelites pitched their camp at Gilgal and kept the Passover there on the fourteenth day of themonth, at evening, in the plain of Jericho.	10 Les Israélites campèrent à Gilgal et y firent la Pâque, le quatorzième jour du mois, le soir, dans laplaine de Jéricho.
11 On the very next day after the Passover, they ate what the land produced, unleavened bread androasted ears of corn.	11 Le lendemain de la Pâque, ils mangèrent du produit du pays: pains sans levain et épis grillés, en cemême jour.
12 The manna stopped the day after they had eaten the produce of the land. The Israelites from that yearonwards ate the produce of Canaan and had no more manna.	12 Il n'y eut plus de manne le lendemain, où ils mangeaient du produit du pays. Les Israélites n'ayantplus de manne se nourrirent dès cette année des produits de la terre de Canaan.
13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him, grasping anaked sword. Joshua walked towards him and said to him, 'Are you on our side or on that of our enemies?'	13 Or Josué, se trouvant près de Jéricho, leva les yeux et vit un homme qui se tenait debout devant lui,une épée nue à la main. Josué s'avança vers lui et lui dit: "Es-tu des nôtres ou de nos ennemis?"
14 He replied, 'On neither side. I have come now as the captain of the army of Yahweh.' Joshua fel on hisface to the ground, worshipping him, and said, 'What has my Lord to say to his servant?'	14 Il répondit: "Non! Mais je suis le chef de l'armée de Yahvé, et maintenant je suis venu." Josué,tombant la face contre terre, l'adora et dit: "Que dit mon Seigneur à son serviteur?"
15 The captain of the army of Yahweh answered Joshua, 'Take your sandals off your feet, for the placewhere you are standing is holy.' And Joshua did so.	15 Le chef de l'armée de Yahvé répondit à Josué: "Ote tes sandales de tes pieds, car le lieu sur lequel tute trouves est saint." Et Josué fit ainsi.
