Joshua 5

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 When al the kings of the Amorites living to westward across the Jordan, and al the kings of theCanaanites living on the seaboard, heard that Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan before theIsraelites until they had crossed, their hearts failed and they lost al courage to resist the Israelites.	1 Quando tutti i re amorrei che abitavano ad ovest del Giordano, e tutti i re Cananei che erano sul litorale, seppero che il Signore aveva asciugato le acque davanti ai figli d'Israele, finché essi non furono passati, mancò loro ogni coraggio e nessuno più si sentì forza davanti ai figli d'Israele.
2 At this time Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again (a secondtime).	2 In quel tempo il Signore disse a Giosuè: "Fatti dei coltelli di pietra e circoncidi di nuovo i figli d'Israele".
3 Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites on the Hil of Foreskins.	3 Giosuè si procurò dei coltelli di pietra e circoncise i figli d'Israele presso il colle di Aralot.
4 The reason why Joshua circumcised them was this. Al the males of the people who had come out ofEgypt of age to bear arms had died in the desert on their journey after leaving Egypt.	4 Questo è il motivo per il quale Giosuè li fece circoncidere: tutta la gente che era uscita dall'Egitto, i maschi, tutti quelli atti alla guerra, erano morti strada facendo, nel deserto, dopo l'uscita dall'Egitto.
5 Now, al the people who came out had been circumcised; but none of those born in the desert, duringthe journey, after leaving Egypt, had been circumcised;	5 Ora, tutto questo popolo che era uscito dall'Egitto era circonciso, ma quelli che erano nati nel deserto, durante il viaggio dopo l'uscita dall'Egitto, non erano circoncisi.
6 for the Israelites walked the desert for forty years, until the whole nation had died out, that is, the menwho had come out of Egypt of age to bear arms; they had not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and Yahweh hadsworn to them never to let them see the land which he had sworn to their ancestors that he would give us, a landflowing with milk and honey.	6 Per quarant'anni, infatti, i figli d'Israele vagarono nel deserto, in modo che perì tutta la nazione, cioè tutti quelli che nel momento dell'uscita dall'Egitto erano atti alla guerra; questi non avevano ascoltato la parola del Signore, quando egli aveva giurato loro che non avrebbe consentito che vedessero la terra, che aveva giurato di dare ai loro padri, una terra abbondantissima in latte e miele.
7 But in place of these he set their sons, and these were the ones whom Joshua circumcised: they wereuncircumcised because they had not been circumcised during the journey.	7 Ma in loro vece egli suscitò i loro figli: questi fece circoncidere Giosuè, perché questi erano incirconcisi, non essendo stati circoncisi durante il viaggio.
8 When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they stayed resting in the camp till they werewel again.	8 Quando finì di circoncidersi tutta la nazione, rimasero fermi nell'accampamento, finché furono guariti.
9 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Today I have taken the shame of Egypt away from you.' Hence, the placehas been cal ed Gilgal ever since.	9 Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: "Oggi ho allontanato da voi l'onta dell'Egitto". Così quel luogo fu chiamato Gàlgala fino a questo giorno.
10 The Israelites pitched their camp at Gilgal and kept the Passover there on the fourteenth day of themonth, at evening, in the plain of Jericho.	10 Stettero quindi accampati i figli d'Israele in Gàlgala e celebrarono la Pasqua il 14 del mese, la sera, nella pianura di Gerico.
11 On the very next day after the Passover, they ate what the land produced, unleavened bread androasted ears of corn.	11 La mattina di Pasqua mangiarono dei prodotti della terra, pane azzimo e spighe abbrustolite, in quello stesso giorno.
12 The manna stopped the day after they had eaten the produce of the land. The Israelites from that yearonwards ate the produce of Canaan and had no more manna.	12 Da quello stesso mattino, allorché cominciarono a mangiare i frutti del paese, non ci fu più la manna. Non ci fu più la manna per i figli d'Israele ed essi mangiarono quell'anno i frutti della terra di Canaan.
13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him, grasping anaked sword. Joshua walked towards him and said to him, 'Are you on our side or on that of our enemies?'	13 Mentre Giosuè si trovava presso Gerico levò lo sguardo ed ecco vide un uomo in piedi dinanzi a sé, con in mano una spada sguainata. Giosuè gli andò incontro e gli rivolse la parola: "Sei dei nostri oppure dei nostri avversari?".
14 He replied, 'On neither side. I have come now as the captain of the army of Yahweh.' Joshua fel on hisface to the ground, worshipping him, and said, 'What has my Lord to say to his servant?'	14 Quegli gli rispose: "Io, capo dell'esercito del Signore, arrivo in questo momento". Allora Giosuè cadde bocconi per adorarlo e poi disse: "Che cosa comanda il mio capo al suo servo?".
15 The captain of the army of Yahweh answered Joshua, 'Take your sandals off your feet, for the placewhere you are standing is holy.' And Joshua did so.	15 Il capo dell'esercito del Signore rispose a Giosuè: "Togli dai piedi i sandali, perché questo luogo dove stai è santo". Giosuè obbedì prontamente.
