NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Since you have been raised up to be with Christ, you must look for the things that are above, whereChrist is, sitting at God's right hand.1 Therefore, if you be risen with Christ, seek the things that are above; where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God:
Let your thoughts be on things above, not on the things that are on the earth,2 Mind the things that are above, not the things that are upon the earth.
because you have died, and now the life you have is hidden with Christ in God.3 For you are dead; and your life is hid with Christ in God.
But when Christ is revealed -- and he is your life-you, too, wil be revealed with him in glory.4 When Christ shall appear, who is your life, then you also shall appear with him in glory.
That is why you must kill everything in you that is earthly: sexual vice, impurity, uncontrol ed passion, evil desires and especially greed, which is the same thing as worshipping a false god;5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, lust, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is the service of idols.
it is precisely these things which draw God's retribution upon those who resist.6 For which things the wrath of God cometh upon the children of unbelief,
And these things made up your way of life when you were living among such people,7 In which you also walked some time, when you lived in them.
but now you also must give up al these things: human anger, hot temper, malice, abusive language anddirty talk;8 But now put you also all away: anger, indignation, malice, blasphemy, filthy speech out of your mouth.
and do not lie to each other. You have stripped off your old behaviour with your old self,9 Lie not one to another: stripping yourselves of the old man with his deeds,
and you have put on a new self which will progress towards true knowledge the more it is renewed inthe image of its Creator;10 And putting on the new, him who is renewed unto knowledge, according to the image of him that created him.
and in that image there is no room for distinction between Greek and Jew, between the circumcisedand uncircumcised, or between barbarian and Scythian, slave and free. There is only Christ: he is everythingand he is in everything.11 Where there is neither Gentile nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian nor Scythian, bond nor free. But Christ is all, and in all.
As the chosen of God, then, the holy people whom he loves, you are to be clothed in heartfeltcompassion, in generosity and humility, gentleness and patience.12 Put ye on therefore, as the elect of God, holy, and beloved, the bowels of mercy, benignity, humility, modesty, patience:
Bear with one another; forgive each other if one of you has a complaint against another. The Lord hasforgiven you; now you must do the same.13 Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if any have a complaint against another: even as the Lord hath forgiven you, so do you also.
Over al these clothes, put on love, the perfect bond.14 But above all these things have charity, which is the bond of perfection:
And may the peace of Christ reign in your hearts, because it is for this that you were cal ed together inone body. Always be thankful.15 And let the peace of Christ rejoice in your hearts, wherein also you are called in one body: and be ye thankful.
Let the Word of Christ, in al its richness, find a home with you. Teach each other, and advise eachother, in al wisdom. With gratitude in your hearts sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs to God;16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you abundantly, in all wisdom: teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual canticles, singing in grace in your hearts to God.
and whatever you say or do, let it be in the name of the Lord Jesus, in thanksgiving to God the Fatherthrough him.17 All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Wives, be subject to your husbands, as you should in the Lord.18 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as it behoveth in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives and do not be sharp with them.19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter towards them.
Children, be obedient to your parents always, because that is what will please the Lord.20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing to the Lord.
Parents, do not irritate your children or they will lose heart.21 Fathers, provoke not your children to indignation, lest they be discouraged.
Slaves, be obedient in every way to the people who, according to human reckoning, are your masters;not only when you are under their eye, as if you had only to please human beings, but wholeheartedly, out ofrespect for the Master.22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not serving to the eye, as pleasing men, but in simplicity of heart, fearing God.
Whatever your work is, put your heart into it as done for the Lord and not for human beings,23 Whatsoever you do, do it from the heart, as to the Lord, and not to men:
knowing that the Lord wil repay you by making you his heirs. It is Christ the Lord that you are serving.24 Knowing that you shall receive of the Lord the reward of inheritance. Serve ye the Lord Christ.
Anyone who does wrong wil be repaid in kind. For there is no favouritism.25 For he that doth wrong, shall receive for that which he hath done wrongfully: and there is no respect of persons with God.
