NEW JERUSALEMRevised Standard Version Catholic Edition
Finally, brothers, I wish you joy in the Lord. To write to you what I have already written before is notrouble to me and to you will be a protection.1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is not irksome to me, and is safe for you.
Beware of dogs! Beware of evil workmen! Beware of self-mutilators!2 Look out for the dogs, look out for the evil-workers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh.
We are the true people of the circumcision since we worship by the Spirit of God and make Christ Jesusour only boast, not relying on physical qualifications,3 For we are the true circumcision, who worship God in spirit, and glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh.
although, I myself could rely on these too. If anyone does claim to rely on them, my claim is better.4 Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If any other man thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more:
Circumcised on the eighth day of my life, I was born of the race of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, aHebrew born of Hebrew parents. In the matter of the Law, I was a Pharisee;5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law a Pharisee,
as for religious fervour, I was a persecutor of the Church; as for the uprightness embodied in the Law, Iwas faultless.6 as to zeal a persecutor of the church, as to righteousness under the law blameless.
But what were once my assets I now through Christ Jesus count as losses.7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
Yes, I wil go further: because of the supreme advantage of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, I counteverything else as loss. For him I have accepted the loss of al other things, and look on them all as filth if only Ican gain Christ8 Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ
and be given a place in him, with the uprightness I have gained not from the Law, but through faith inChrist, an uprightness from God, based on faith,9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, based on law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith;
that I may come to know him and the power of his resurrection, and partake of his sufferings by beingmoulded to the pattern of his death,10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,
striving towards the goal of resurrection from the dead.11 that if possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
Not that I have secured it already, nor yet reached my goal, but I am stil pursuing it in the attempt totake hold of the prize for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
Brothers, I do not reckon myself as having taken hold of it; I can only say that forgetting al that liesbehind me, and straining forward to what lies in front,13 Brethren, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,
I am racing towards the finishing-point to win the prize of God's heavenly call in Christ Jesus.14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
So this is the way in which al of us who are mature should be thinking, and if you are still thinkingdifferently in any way, then God has yet to make this matter clear to you.15 Let those of us who are mature be thus minded; and if in anything you are otherwise minded, God will reveal that also to you.
Meanwhile, let us go forward from the point we have each attained.16 Only let us hold true to what we have attained.
Brothers, be united in imitating me. Keep your eyes fixed on those who act according to the exampleyou have from me.17 Brethren, join in imitating me, and mark those who so live as you have an example in us.
For there are so many people of whom I have often warned you, and now I warn you again with tearsin my eyes, who behave like the enemies of Christ's cross.18 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, live as enemies of the cross of Christ.
They are destined to be lost; their god is the stomach; they glory in what they should think shameful, since their minds are set on earthly things.19 Their end is destruction, their god is the belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.
But our homeland is in heaven and it is from there that we are expecting a Saviour, the Lord JesusChrist,20 But our commonwealth is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
who wil transfigure the wretched body of ours into the mould of his glorious body, through the workingof the power which he has, even to bring all things under his mastery.21 who will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power which enables him even to subject all things to himself.
