NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Finally, brothers, I wish you joy in the Lord. To write to you what I have already written before is notrouble to me and to you will be a protection.1 De cetero, fratres mei, gaudete in Domino. Eadem vobis scribere, mihi quidem non pigrum, vobis autem necessarium.
Beware of dogs! Beware of evil workmen! Beware of self-mutilators!2 Videte canes, videte malos operarios, videte concisionem.
We are the true people of the circumcision since we worship by the Spirit of God and make Christ Jesusour only boast, not relying on physical qualifications,3 Nos enim sumus circumcisio, qui spiritu servimus Deo, et gloriamur in Christo Jesu, et non in carne fiduciam habentes,
although, I myself could rely on these too. If anyone does claim to rely on them, my claim is better.4 quamquam ego habeam confidentiam et in carne. Si quis alius videtur confidere in carne, ego magis,
Circumcised on the eighth day of my life, I was born of the race of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, aHebrew born of Hebrew parents. In the matter of the Law, I was a Pharisee;5 circumcisus octavo die, ex genere Israël, de tribu Benjamin, Hebræus ex Hebræis, secundum legem pharisæus,
as for religious fervour, I was a persecutor of the Church; as for the uprightness embodied in the Law, Iwas faultless.6 secundum æmulationem persequens Ecclesiam Dei, secundum justitiam, quæ in lege est, conversatus sine querela.
But what were once my assets I now through Christ Jesus count as losses.7 Sed quæ mihi fuerunt lucra, hæc arbitratus sum propter Christum detrimenta.
Yes, I wil go further: because of the supreme advantage of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, I counteverything else as loss. For him I have accepted the loss of al other things, and look on them all as filth if only Ican gain Christ8 Verumtamen existimo omnia detrimentum esse propter eminentem scientiam Jesu Christi Domini mei : propter quem omnia detrimentum feci, et arbitror ut stercora, ut Christum lucrifaciam,
and be given a place in him, with the uprightness I have gained not from the Law, but through faith inChrist, an uprightness from God, based on faith,9 et inveniar in illo non habens meam justitiam, quæ ex lege est, sed illam, quæ ex fide est Christi Jesu : quæ ex Deo est justitia in fide,
that I may come to know him and the power of his resurrection, and partake of his sufferings by beingmoulded to the pattern of his death,10 ad cognoscendum illum, et virtutem resurrectionis ejus, et societatem passionum illius : configuratus morti ejus :
striving towards the goal of resurrection from the dead.11 si quo modo occurram ad resurrectionem, quæ est ex mortuis :
Not that I have secured it already, nor yet reached my goal, but I am stil pursuing it in the attempt totake hold of the prize for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.12 non quod jam acceperim, aut jam perfectus sim : sequor autem, si quomodo comprehendam in quo et comprehensus sum a Christo Jesu.
Brothers, I do not reckon myself as having taken hold of it; I can only say that forgetting al that liesbehind me, and straining forward to what lies in front,13 Fratres, ego me non arbitror comprehendisse. Unum autem, quæ quidem retro sunt obliviscens, ad ea vero quæ sunt priora, extendens meipsum,
I am racing towards the finishing-point to win the prize of God's heavenly call in Christ Jesus.14 ad destinatum persequor, ad bravium supernæ vocationis Dei in Christo Jesu.
So this is the way in which al of us who are mature should be thinking, and if you are still thinkingdifferently in any way, then God has yet to make this matter clear to you.15 Quicumque ergo perfecti sumus, hoc sentiamus : et si quid aliter sapitis, et hoc vobis Deus revelabit.
Meanwhile, let us go forward from the point we have each attained.16 Verumtamen ad quod pervenimus ut idem sapiamus, et in eadem permaneamus regula.
Brothers, be united in imitating me. Keep your eyes fixed on those who act according to the exampleyou have from me.17 Imitatores mei estote, fratres, et observate eos qui ita ambulant, sicut habetis formam nostram.
For there are so many people of whom I have often warned you, and now I warn you again with tearsin my eyes, who behave like the enemies of Christ's cross.18 Multi enim ambulant, quos sæpe dicebam vobis (nunc autem et flens dico) inimicos crucis Christi :
They are destined to be lost; their god is the stomach; they glory in what they should think shameful, since their minds are set on earthly things.19 quorum finis interitus : quorum Deus venter est : et gloria in confusione ipsorum, qui terrena sapiunt.
But our homeland is in heaven and it is from there that we are expecting a Saviour, the Lord JesusChrist,20 Nostra autem conversatio in cælis est : unde etiam Salvatorem exspectamus Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum,
who wil transfigure the wretched body of ours into the mould of his glorious body, through the workingof the power which he has, even to bring all things under his mastery.21 qui reformabit corpus humilitatis nostræ, configuratum corpori claritatis suæ, secundum operationem, qua etiam possit subjicere sibi omnia.
