NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all God's holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, togetherwith their presiding elders and the deacons.1 Paulus et Timotheus, servi Jesu Christi, omnibus sanctis in Christo Jesu, qui sunt Philippis, cum episcopis et diaconibus.
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.2 Gratia vobis, et pax a Deo Patre nostro, et Domino Jesu Christo.
I thank my God whenever I think of you,3 Gratias ago Deo meo in omni memoria vestri,
and every time I pray for you al , I always pray with joy4 semper in cunctis orationibus meis pro omnibus vobis, cum gaudio deprecationem faciens,
for your partnership in the gospel from the very first day up to the present.5 super communicatione vestra in Evangelio Christi a prima die usque nunc.
I am quite confident that the One who began a good work in you wil go on completing it until the Day ofJesus Christ comes.6 Confidens hoc ipsum, quia qui cœpit in vobis opus bonum, perficiet usque in diem Christi Jesu :
It is only right that I should feel like this towards you all, because you have a place in my heart, sinceyou have all shared together in the grace that has been mine, both my chains and my work defending andestablishing the gospel.7 sicut est mihi justum hoc sentire pro omnibus vobis : eo quod habeam vos in corde, et in vinculis meis, et in defensione, et confirmatione Evangelii, socios gaudii mei omnes vos esse.
For God wil testify for me how much I long for you al with the warm longing of Christ Jesus;8 Testis enim mihi est Deus, quomodo cupiam omnes vos in visceribus Jesu Christi.
it is my prayer that your love for one another may grow more and more with the knowledge andcomplete understanding9 Et hoc oro, ut caritas vestra magis ac magis abundet in scientia, et in omni sensu :
that will help you to come to true discernment, so that you wil be innocent and free of any trace of guiltwhen the Day of Christ comes,10 ut probetis potiora, ut sitis sinceri, et sine offensa in diem Christi,
entirely fil ed with the fruits of uprightness through Jesus Christ, for the glory and praise of God.11 repleti fructu justitiæ per Jesum Christum, in gloriam et laudem Dei.
Now I want you to realise, brothers, that the circumstances of my present life are helping rather thanhindering the advance of the gospel.12 Scire autem vos volo fratres, quia quæ circa me sunt, magis ad profectum venerunt Evangelii :
My chains in Christ have become wel known not only to al the Praetorium, but to everybody else,13 ita ut vincula mea manifesta fierent in Christo in omni prætorio, et in ceteris omnibus,
and so most of the brothers in the Lord have gained confidence from my chains and are getting moreand more daring in announcing the Message without any fear.14 et plures e fratribus in Domino confidentes vinculis meis, abundantius auderent sine timore verbum Dei loqui.
It is true that some of them are preaching Christ out of malice and rivalry; but there are many as welwhose intentions are good;15 Quidam quidem et propter invidiam et contentionem : quidam autem et propter bonam voluntatem Christum prædicant :
some are doing it out of love, knowing that I remain firm in my defence of the gospel.16 quidam ex caritate, scientes quoniam in defensionem Evangelii positus sum.
There are others who are proclaiming Christ out of jealousy, not in sincerity but meaning to add to theweight of my chains.17 Quidam autem ex contentione Christum annuntiant non sincere, existimantes pressuram se suscitare vinculis meis.
But what does it matter? Only that in both ways, whether with false motives or true, Christ isproclaimed, and for that I am happy;18 Quid enim ? Dum omni modo sive per occasionem, sive per veritatem, Christus annuntietur : et in hoc gaudeo, sed et gaudebo.
and I shal go on being happy, too, because I know that this is what wil save me, with your prayers andwith the support of the Spirit of Jesus Christ;19 Scio enim quia hoc mihi proveniet ad salutem, per vestram orationem, et subministrationem Spiritus Jesu Christi,
al in accordance with my most confident hope and trust that I shal never have to admit defeat, but withcomplete fearlessness I shall go on, so that now, as always, Christ wil be glorified in my body, whether by mylife or my death.20 secundum exspectationem et spem meam, quia in nullo confundar : sed in omni fiducia sicut semper, et nunc magnificabitur Christus in corpore meo, sive per vitam, sive per mortem.
Life to me, of course, is Christ, but then death would be a positive gain.21 Mihi enim vivere Christus est, et mori lucrum.
On the other hand again, if to be alive in the body gives me an opportunity for fruitful work, I do notknow which I should choose.22 Quod si vivere in carne, hic mihi fructus operis est, et quid eligam ignoro.
I am caught in this dilemma: I want to be gone and to be with Christ, and this is by far the strongerdesire-23 Coarctor autem e duobus : desiderium habens dissolvi, et esse cum Christo, multo magis melius :
and yet for your sake to stay alive in this body is a more urgent need.24 permanere autem in carne, necessarium propter vos.
This much I know for certain, that I shal stay and stand by you al , to encourage your advance andyour joy in the faith,25 Et hoc confidens scio quia manebo, et permanebo omnibus vobis ad profectum vestrum, et gaudium fidei :
so that my return to be among you may increase to overflowing your pride in Jesus Christ on myaccount.26 ut gratulatio vestra abundet in Christo Jesu in me, per meum adventum iterum ad vos.
But you must always behave in a way that is worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come toyou and see for myself or whether I only hear al about you from a distance, I shall find that you are standing firmand united in spirit, battling, as a team with a single aim, for the faith of the gospel,27 Tantum digne Evangelio Christi conversamini : ut sive cum venero, et videro vos, sive absens audiam de vobis, quia statis in uno spiritu unanimes, collaborantes fidei Evangelii :
undismayed by any of your opponents. This will be a clear sign, for them that they are to be lost, andfor you that you are to be saved.28 et in nullo terreamini ab adversariis : quæ illis est causa perditionis, vobis autem salutis, et hoc a Deo :
This comes from God, for you have been granted the privilege for Christ's sake not only of believing inhim but of suffering for him as wel ;29 quia vobis donatum est pro Christo, non solum ut in eum credatis, sed ut etiam pro illo patiamini :
you are fighting the same battle which you saw me fighting for him and which you hear I am fightingstill.30 idem certamen habentes, quale et vidistis in me, et nunc audistis de me.
