Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all God's holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, togetherwith their presiding elders and the deacons.1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons.
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.2 Grace and peace to you, from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
I thank my God whenever I think of you,3 I give thanks to my God, with every remembrance of you,
and every time I pray for you al , I always pray with joy4 always, in all my prayers, making supplication for all of you with joy,
for your partnership in the gospel from the very first day up to the present.5 because of your communion in the Gospel of Christ, from the first day even until now.
I am quite confident that the One who began a good work in you wil go on completing it until the Day ofJesus Christ comes.6 I am confident of this very thing: that he who has begun this good work in you will perfect it, unto the day of Christ Jesus.
It is only right that I should feel like this towards you all, because you have a place in my heart, sinceyou have all shared together in the grace that has been mine, both my chains and my work defending andestablishing the gospel.7 So then, it is right for me to feel this way about all of you, because I hold you in my heart, and because, in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the Gospel, you all are partakers of my joy.
For God wil testify for me how much I long for you al with the warm longing of Christ Jesus;8 For God is my witness how, within the heart of Jesus Christ, I long for all of you.
it is my prayer that your love for one another may grow more and more with the knowledge andcomplete understanding9 And this I pray: that your charity may abound more and more, with knowledge and with all understanding,
that will help you to come to true discernment, so that you wil be innocent and free of any trace of guiltwhen the Day of Christ comes,10 so that you may be confirmed in what is better, in order that you may be sincere and without offense on the day of Christ:
entirely fil ed with the fruits of uprightness through Jesus Christ, for the glory and praise of God.11 filled with the fruit of justice, through Jesus Christ, in the glory and praise of God.
Now I want you to realise, brothers, that the circumstances of my present life are helping rather thanhindering the advance of the gospel.12 Now, brothers, I want you to know that the things concerning me happened for the advancement of the Gospel,
My chains in Christ have become wel known not only to al the Praetorium, but to everybody else,13 in such a way that my chains have become manifest in Christ in every place of judgment and in all other such places.
and so most of the brothers in the Lord have gained confidence from my chains and are getting moreand more daring in announcing the Message without any fear.14 And many from among the brothers in the Lord, becoming confident through my chains, are now much bolder in speaking the Word of God without fear.
It is true that some of them are preaching Christ out of malice and rivalry; but there are many as welwhose intentions are good;15 Certainly, some do so even because of envy and contention; and others, too, do so because of a good will to preach Christ.
some are doing it out of love, knowing that I remain firm in my defence of the gospel.16 Some act out of charity, knowing that I have been appointed for the defense of the Gospel.
There are others who are proclaiming Christ out of jealousy, not in sincerity but meaning to add to theweight of my chains.17 But others, out of contention, announce Christ insincerely, claiming that their difficulties lift them up to my chains.
But what does it matter? Only that in both ways, whether with false motives or true, Christ isproclaimed, and for that I am happy;18 But what does it matter? As long as, by every means, whether under pretext or in truthfulness, Christ is announced. And about this, I rejoice, and moreover, I will continue to rejoice.
and I shal go on being happy, too, because I know that this is what wil save me, with your prayers andwith the support of the Spirit of Jesus Christ;19 For I know that this will bring me to salvation, through your prayers and under the ministration of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
al in accordance with my most confident hope and trust that I shal never have to admit defeat, but withcomplete fearlessness I shall go on, so that now, as always, Christ wil be glorified in my body, whether by mylife or my death.20 by means of my own expectation and hope. For in nothing shall I be confounded. Instead, with all confidence, now just as always, Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.
Life to me, of course, is Christ, but then death would be a positive gain.21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
On the other hand again, if to be alive in the body gives me an opportunity for fruitful work, I do notknow which I should choose.22 And while I live in the flesh, for me, there is the fruit of works. But I do not know which I would choose.
I am caught in this dilemma: I want to be gone and to be with Christ, and this is by far the strongerdesire-23 For I am constrained between the two: having a desire to be dissolved and to be with Christ, which is the far better thing,
and yet for your sake to stay alive in this body is a more urgent need.24 but then to remain in the flesh is necessary for your sake.
This much I know for certain, that I shal stay and stand by you al , to encourage your advance andyour joy in the faith,25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall remain and that I shall continue to remain with all of you, for your advancement and for your joy in the faith,
so that my return to be among you may increase to overflowing your pride in Jesus Christ on myaccount.26 so that your rejoicing may abound in Christ Jesus for me, through my return to you again.
But you must always behave in a way that is worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come toyou and see for myself or whether I only hear al about you from a distance, I shall find that you are standing firmand united in spirit, battling, as a team with a single aim, for the faith of the gospel,27 Only let your behavior be worthy of the Gospel of Christ, so that, whether I return and see you, or whether, being absent, I hear about you, still you may stand firm with one spirit, with one mind, laboring together for the faith of the Gospel.
undismayed by any of your opponents. This will be a clear sign, for them that they are to be lost, andfor you that you are to be saved.28 And in nothing be terrified by the adversaries. For what is to them is an occasion of perdition, is to you an occasion of salvation, and this is from God.
This comes from God, for you have been granted the privilege for Christ's sake not only of believing inhim but of suffering for him as wel ;29 For this has been given to you on behalf of Christ, not only so that you may believe in him, but even so that you may suffer with him,
you are fighting the same battle which you saw me fighting for him and which you hear I am fightingstill.30 engaging in the same struggle, of a kind which you also have seen in me, and which you now have heard from me.
