NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
About the gifts of the Spirit, brothers, I want you to be quite certain.1 De spiritalibus autem, fra tres, nolo vos ignorare.
You remember that, when you were pagans, you were irresistibly drawn to inarticulate heathen gods.2 Scitis quoniam,cum gentes essetis, ad simulacra muta, prout ducebamini, euntes.
Because of that, I want to make it quite clear to you that no one who says 'A curse on Jesus' can bespeaking in the Spirit of God, and nobody is able to say, 'Jesus is Lord' except in the Holy Spirit.3 Ideo notumvobis facio quod nemo in Spiritu Dei loquens dicit: “ Anathema Iesus! ”; etnemo potest dicere: “ Dominus Iesus ”, nisi in Spiritu Sancto.
There are many different gifts, but it is always the same Spirit;4 Divisiones vero gratiarum sunt, idem autem Spiritus;
there are many different ways of serving, but it is always the same Lord.5 et divisionesministrationum sunt, idem autem Dominus;
There are many different forms of activity, but in everybody it is the same God who is at work in themal .6 et divisiones operationum sunt, idemvero Deus, qui operatur omnia in omnibus.
The particular manifestation of the Spirit granted to each one is to be used for the general good.7 Unicuique autem datur manifestatioSpiritus ad utilitatem.
To one is given from the Spirit the gift of utterance expressing wisdom; to another the gift of utteranceexpressing knowledge, in accordance with the same Spirit;8 Alii quidem per Spiritum datur sermo sapientiae, aliiautem sermo scientiae secundum eundem Spiritum,
to another, faith, from the same Spirit; and to another, the gifts of healing, through this one Spirit;9 alteri fides in eodem Spiritu,alii donationes sanitatum in uno Spiritu,
to another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the power of distinguishingspirits; to one, the gift of different tongues and to another, the interpretation of tongues.10 alii operationes virtutum, aliiprophetatio, alii discretio spirituum, alii genera linguarum, alii interpretatiolinguarum;
But at work in al these is one and the same Spirit, distributing them at wil to each individual.11 haec autem omnia operatur unus et idem Spiritus, dividens singulisprout vult.
For as with the human body which is a unity although it has many parts -- al the parts of the body,though many, stil making up one single body -- so it is with Christ.12 Sicut enim corpus unum est et membra habet multa, omnia autem membracorporis, cum sint multa, unum corpus sunt, ita et Christus;
We were baptised into one body in a single Spirit, Jews as wel as Greeks, slaves as wel as freemen, and we were all given the same Spirit to drink.13 etenim in unoSpiritu omnes nos in unum corpus baptizati sumus, sive Iudaei sive Graeci siveservi sive liberi, et omnes unum Spiritum potati sumus.
And indeed the body consists not of one member but of many.14 Nam et corpus non estunum membrum sed multa.
If the foot were to say, 'I am not a hand and so I do not belong to the body,' it does not belong to thebody any the less for that.15 Si dixerit pes: “Non sum manus, non sum de corpore”, non ideo non est de corpore;
Or if the ear were to say, 'I am not an eye, and so I do not belong to the body,' that would not stop itsbelonging to the body.16 et si dixerit auris: “ Non sum oculus,non sum de corpore ”, non ideo non est de corpore.
If the whole body were just an eye, how would there be any hearing? If the whole body were hearing,how would there be any smel ing?17 Si totum corpus oculusest, ubi auditus? Si totum auditus, ubi odoratus?
As it is, God has put al the separate parts into the body as he chose.18 Nunc autem posuit Deusmembra, unumquodque eorum in corpore, sicut voluit.
If they were al the same part, how could it be a body?19 Quod si essent omnia unummembrum, ubi corpus?
As it is, the parts are many but the body is one.20 Nunc autem multa quidem membra, unum autem corpus.
The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I have no need of you,' and nor can the head say to the feet, 'I haveno need of you.'21 Non potest dicere oculus manui: “ Non es mihi necessaria! ”; aut iterumcaput pedibus: “ Non estis mihi necessarii! ”.
What is more, it is precisely the parts of the body that seem to be the weakest which are theindispensable ones.22 Sed multo magis, quaevidentur membra corporis infirmiora esse, necessaria sunt;
It is the parts of the body which we consider least dignified that we surround with the greatest dignity;and our less presentable parts are given greater presentability23 et, quae putamusignobiliora membra esse corporis, his honorem abundantiorem circumdamus; et,quae inhonesta sunt nostra, abundantiorem honestatem habent,
which our presentable parts do not need. God has composed the body so that greater dignity isgiven to the parts which were without it,24 honesta autemnostra nullius egent. Sed Deus temperavit corpus, ei, cui deerat, abundantioremtribuendo honorem,
and so that there may not be disagreements inside the body but each part may be equal y concernedfor all the others.25 ut non sit schisma in corpore, sed idipsum pro invicemsollicita sint membra.
If one part is hurt, al the parts share its pain. And if one part is honoured, all the parts share its joy.26 Et sive patitur unum membrum, compatiuntur omniamembra; sive glorificatur unum membrum, congaudent omnia membra.
Now Christ's body is yourselves, each of you with a part to play in the whole.27 Vos autemestis corpus Christi et membra ex parte.
And those whom God has appointed in the Church are, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdlyteachers; after them, miraculous powers, then gifts of healing, helpful acts, guidance, various kinds of tongues.28 Et quosdam quidem posuit Deus in ecclesia primum apostolos, secundoprophetas, tertio doctores, deinde virtutes, exinde donationes curationum,opitulationes, gubernationes, genera linguarum.
Are al of them apostles? Or all prophets? Or all teachers? Or al miracle-workers?29 Numquid omnes apostoli?Numquid omnes prophetae? Numquid omnes doctores? Numquid omnes virtutes?
Do al have the gifts of healing? Do al of them speak in tongues and al interpret them?30 Numquid omnes donationes habent curationum? Numquid omnes linguis loquuntur?Numquid omnes interpretantur?
Set your mind on the higher gifts. And now I am going to put before you the best way of all.31 Aemulamini autem charismata maiora. Et adhucexcellentiorem viam vobis demonstro.
