NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
About the gifts of the Spirit, brothers, I want you to be quite certain.1 Now in regard to spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be unaware.
You remember that, when you were pagans, you were irresistibly drawn to inarticulate heathen gods.2 You know how, when you were pagans, you were constantly attracted and led away to mute idols.
Because of that, I want to make it quite clear to you that no one who says 'A curse on Jesus' can bespeaking in the Spirit of God, and nobody is able to say, 'Jesus is Lord' except in the Holy Spirit.3 Therefore, I tell you that nobody speaking by the spirit of God says, "Jesus be accursed." And no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the holy Spirit.
There are many different gifts, but it is always the same Spirit;4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit;
there are many different ways of serving, but it is always the same Lord.5 there are different forms of service but the same Lord;
There are many different forms of activity, but in everybody it is the same God who is at work in themal .6 there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.
The particular manifestation of the Spirit granted to each one is to be used for the general good.7 To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.
To one is given from the Spirit the gift of utterance expressing wisdom; to another the gift of utteranceexpressing knowledge, in accordance with the same Spirit;8 To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit;
to another, faith, from the same Spirit; and to another, the gifts of healing, through this one Spirit;9 to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit;
to another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the power of distinguishingspirits; to one, the gift of different tongues and to another, the interpretation of tongues.10 to another mighty deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues.
But at work in al these is one and the same Spirit, distributing them at wil to each individual.11 But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes.
For as with the human body which is a unity although it has many parts -- al the parts of the body,though many, stil making up one single body -- so it is with Christ.12 As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ.
We were baptised into one body in a single Spirit, Jews as wel as Greeks, slaves as wel as freemen, and we were all given the same Spirit to drink.13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.
And indeed the body consists not of one member but of many.14 Now the body is not a single part, but many.
If the foot were to say, 'I am not a hand and so I do not belong to the body,' it does not belong to thebody any the less for that.15 If a foot should say, "Because I am not a hand I do not belong to the body," it does not for this reason belong any less to the body.
Or if the ear were to say, 'I am not an eye, and so I do not belong to the body,' that would not stop itsbelonging to the body.16 Or if an ear should say, "Because I am not an eye I do not belong to the body," it does not for this reason belong any less to the body.
If the whole body were just an eye, how would there be any hearing? If the whole body were hearing,how would there be any smel ing?17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
As it is, God has put al the separate parts into the body as he chose.18 But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended.
If they were al the same part, how could it be a body?19 If they were all one part, where would the body be?
As it is, the parts are many but the body is one.20 But as it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I have no need of you,' and nor can the head say to the feet, 'I haveno need of you.'21 The eye cannot say to the hand, "I do not need you," nor again the head to the feet, "I do not need you."
What is more, it is precisely the parts of the body that seem to be the weakest which are theindispensable ones.22 Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary,
It is the parts of the body which we consider least dignified that we surround with the greatest dignity;and our less presentable parts are given greater presentability23 and those parts of the body that we consider less honorable we surround with greater honor, and our less presentable parts are treated with greater propriety,
which our presentable parts do not need. God has composed the body so that greater dignity isgiven to the parts which were without it,24 whereas our more presentable parts do not need this. But God has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it,
and so that there may not be disagreements inside the body but each part may be equal y concernedfor all the others.25 so that there may be no division in the body, but that the parts may have the same concern for one another.
If one part is hurt, al the parts share its pain. And if one part is honoured, all the parts share its joy.26 If (one) part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy.
Now Christ's body is yourselves, each of you with a part to play in the whole.27 Now you are Christ's body, and individually parts of it.
And those whom God has appointed in the Church are, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdlyteachers; after them, miraculous powers, then gifts of healing, helpful acts, guidance, various kinds of tongues.28 Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues.
Are al of them apostles? Or all prophets? Or all teachers? Or al miracle-workers?29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work mighty deeds?
Do al have the gifts of healing? Do al of them speak in tongues and al interpret them?30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
Set your mind on the higher gifts. And now I am going to put before you the best way of all.31 Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts. But I shall show you a still more excellent way.
