NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
I have told you al this so that you may not fal away.1 Haec locutus sum vobis, ut non scandalizemini.
They wil expel you from the synagogues, and indeed the time is coming when anyone who kills youwil think he is doing a holy service to God.2 Absque synagogisfacient vos; sed venit hora, ut omnis, qui interficit vos, arbitretur obsequiumse praestare Deo.
They wil do these things because they have never known either the Father or me.3 Et haec facient, quia non noverunt Patrem neque me.
But I have told you all this, so that when the time for it comes you may remember that I told you. I didnot tell you this from the beginning, because I was with you;4 Sedhaec locutus sum vobis, ut, cum venerit hora eorum, reminiscamini eorum, quiaego dixi vobis. Haec autem vobis ab initio non dixi, quia vobiscum eram.
but now I am going to the one who sent me. Not one of you asks, 'Where are you going?'5 At nunc vado ad eum, qui me misit, et nemo ex vobis interrogat me: “Quovadis?”.
Yet you are sad at heart because I have told you this.6 Sed quia haec locutus sum vobis, tristitia implevit cor vestrum.
Stil , I am telling you the truth: it is for your own good that I am going, because unless I go, theParaclete wil not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.7 Sed ego veritatem dico vobis: Expedit vobis, ut ego vadam. Si enim non abiero,Paraclitus non veniet ad vos; si autem abiero, mittam eum ad vos.
And when he comes, he wil show the world how wrong it was, about sin, and about who was in theright, and about judgement:8 Et cumvenerit ille, arguet mundum de peccato et de iustitia et de iudicio:
about sin: in that they refuse to believe in me;9 depeccato quidem, quia non credunt in me;
about who was in the right: in that I am going to the Father and you will see me no more;10 de iustitia vero, quia ad Patremvado, et iam non videtis me;
about judgement: in that the prince of this world is already condemned.11 de iudicio autem, quia princeps mundi huiusiudicatus est.
I still have many things to say to you but they would be too much for you to bear now.12 Adhuc multa habeo vobis dicere, sed non potestis portare modo.
However, when the Spirit of truth comes he will lead you to the complete truth, since he wil not bespeaking of his own accord, but wil say only what he has been told; and he wil reveal to you the things to come.13 Cum autemvenerit ille, Spiritus veritatis, deducet vos in omnem veritatem; non enimloquetur a semetipso, sed quaecumque audiet, loquetur et, quae ventura sunt,annuntiabit vobis.
He wil glorify me, since al he reveals to you wil be taken from what is mine.14 Ille me clarificabit, quia de meo accipiet et annuntiabitvobis.
Everything the Father has is mine; that is why I said: all he reveals to you wil be taken from what ismine.15 Omnia, quaecumque habet Pater, mea sunt; propterea dixi quia de meoaccipit et annuntiabit vobis.
In a short time you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you wil see me again.16 Modicum, et iam non videtis me; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me ”.
Then some of his disciples said to one another, 'What does he mean, "In a short time you wil nolonger see me, and then a short time later you wil see me again," and, "I am going to the Father"?17 Dixerunt ergo ex discipulis eius ad invicem: “ Quid est hoc, quod dicit nobis:“Modicum, et non videtis me; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me” et: “Vadoad Patrem”? ”.
What is this "short time"? We don't know what he means.'18 Dicebant ergo: “ Quid est hoc, quod dicit: “Modicum”?Nescimus quid loquitur ”.
Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said, 'You are asking one another what I meantby saying, "In a short time you wil no longer see me, and then a short time later you wil see me again."19 Cognovit Iesus quia volebant eum interrogare etdixit eis: “ De hoc quaeritis inter vos, quia dixi: “Modicum, et non videtisme; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me”?
'In al truth I tell you, you wil be weeping and wailing while the world wil rejoice; you will be sorrowful,but your sorrow wil turn to joy.20 Amen, amen dico vobis quiaplorabitis et flebitis vos, mundus autem gaudebit; vos contristabimini, sedtristitia vestra vertetur in gaudium.
A woman in childbirth suffers, because her time has come; but when she has given birth to the childshe forgets the suffering in her joy that a human being has been born into the world.21 Mulier, cum parit, tristitiam habet,quia venit hora eius; cum autem pepererit puerum, iam non meminit pressuraepropter gaudium, quia natus est homo in mundum.
So it is with you: you are sad now, but I shal see you again, and your hearts wil be ful of joy, andthat joy no one shal take from you.22 Et vos igitur nunc quidemtristitiam habetis; iterum autem videbo vos, et gaudebit cor vestrum, et gaudiumvestrum nemo tollit a vobis.
When that day comes, you will not ask me any questions. In all truth I tel you, anything you ask fromthe Father he wil grant in my name.23 Et in illo die me non rogabitis quidquam.
Amen, amen dico vobis: Si quid petieritis Patrem in nomine meo, dabit vobis.
Until now you have not asked anything in my name. Ask and you wil receive, and so your joy wil becomplete.24 Usque modo non petistis quidquam in nomine meo. Petite et accipietis, ut gaudiumvestrum sit plenum.
I have been tel ing you these things in veiled language. The hour is coming when I shall no longerspeak to you in veiled language but tell you about the Father in plain words.25 Haec in proverbiis locutus sum vobis; venit hora, cum iamnon in proverbiis loquar vobis, sed palam de Patre annuntiabo vobis.
When that day comes you wil ask in my name; and I do not say that I shal pray to the Father for you,26 Illo diein nomine meo petetis, et non dico vobis quia ego rogabo Patrem de vobis;
because the Father himself loves you for loving me, and believing that I came from God.27 ipse enim Pater amat vos, quia vos me amastis et credidistis quia ego a Deoexivi.
I came from the Father and have come into the world and now I am leaving the world to go to theFather.'28 Exivi a Patre et veni in mundum; iterum relinquo mundum et vado adPatrem ”.
His disciples said, 'Now you are speaking plainly and not using veiled language.29 Dicunt discipuli eius: “ Ecce nunc palam loqueris, etproverbium nullum dicis.
Now we see that you know everything and need not wait for questions to be put into words; becauseof this we believe that you came from God.'30 Nunc scimus quia scis omnia, et non opus est tibi,ut quis te interroget; in hoc credimus quia a Deo existi ”.
Jesus answered them: Do you believe at last?31 Respondit eisIesus: “ Modo creditis?
Listen; the time wil come -- indeed it has come already -- when you are going to be scattered, eachgoing his own way and leaving me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.32 Ecce venit hora et iam venit, ut dispergaminiunusquisque in propria et me solum relinquatis; et non sum solus, quia Patermecum est.
I have told you al this so that you may find peace in me. In the world you wil have hardship, but becourageous: I have conquered the world.33 Haec locutus sum vobis, ut in me pacem habeatis; in mundopressuram habetis, sed confidite, ego vici mundum ”.
