NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Now it happened that after this he made his way through towns and villages preaching and proclaimingthe good news of the kingdom of God. With him went the Twelve,1 Et factum est deinceps, et ipse iter faciebat per civitates, et castella prædicans, et evangelizans regnum Dei : et duodecim cum illo,
as wel as certain women who had been cured of evil spirits and ailments: Mary surnamed theMagdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,2 et mulieres aliquæ, quæ erant curatæ a spiritibus malignis et infirmantibus : Maria, quæ vocatur Magdalene, de qua septem dæmonia exierant,
Joanna the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out oftheir own resources.3 et Joanna uxor Chusæ procuratoris Herodis, et Susanna, et aliæ multæ, quæ ministrabant ei de facultatibus suis.
With a large crowd gathering and people from every town finding their way to him, he told this parable:4 Cum autem turba plurima convenirent, et de civitatibus properarent ad eum, dixit per similitudinem :
'A sower went out to sow his seed. Now as he sowed, some fel on the edge of the path and wastrampled on; and the birds of the air ate it up.5 Exiit qui seminat, seminare semen suum. Et dum seminat, aliud cecidit secus viam, et conculcatum est, et volucres cæli comederunt illud.
Some seed fell on rock, and when it came up it withered away, having no moisture.6 Et aliud cecidit supra petram : et natum aruit, quia non habebat humorem.
Some seed fell in the middle of thorns and the thorns grew with it and choked it.7 Et aliud cecidit inter spinas, et simul exortæ spinæ suffocaverunt illud.
And some seed fell into good soil and grew and produced its crop a hundredfold.' Saying this he cried,'Anyone who has ears for listening should listen!'8 Et aliud cecidit in terram bonam : et ortum fecit fructum centuplum. Hæc dicens clamabat : Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat.
His disciples asked him what this parable might mean,9 Interrogabant autem eum discipuli ejus, quæ esset hæc parabola.
and he said, 'To you is granted to understand the secrets of the kingdom of God; for the rest it remainsin parables, so that they may look but not perceive, listen but not understand.10 Quibus ipse dixit : Vobis datum est nosse mysterium regni Dei, ceteris autem in parabolis : ut videntes non videant, et audientes non intelligant.
'This, then, is what the parable means: the seed is the word of God.11 Est autem hæc parabola : Semen est verbum Dei.
Those on the edge of the path are people who have heard it, and then the devil comes and carriesaway the word from their hearts in case they should believe and be saved.12 Qui autem secus viam, hi sunt qui audiunt : deinde venit diabolus, et tollit verbum de corde eorum, ne credentes salvi fiant.
Those on the rock are people who, when they first hear it, welcome the word with joy. But these haveno root; they believe for a while, and in time of trial they give up.13 Nam qui supra petram, qui cum audierint, cum gaudio suscipiunt verbum : et hi radices non habent : qui ad tempus credunt, et in tempore tentationis recedunt.
As for the part that fell into thorns, this is people who have heard, but as they go on their way they arechoked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life and never produce any crops.14 Quod autem in spinas cecidit : hi sunt qui audierunt, et a sollicitudinibus, et divitiis, et voluptatibus vitæ euntes, suffocantur, et non referunt fructum.
As for the part in the rich soil, this is people with a noble and generous heart who have heard the wordand take it to themselves and yield a harvest through their perseverance.15 Quod autem in bonam terram : hi sunt qui in corde bono et optimo audientes verbum retinent, et fructum afferunt in patientia.
'No one lights a lamp to cover it with a bowl or to put it under a bed. No, it is put on a lamp-stand sothat people may see the light when they come in.16 Nemo autem lucernam accendens, operit eam vase, aut subtus lectum ponit : sed supra candelabrum ponit, ut intrantes videant lumen.
For nothing is hidden but it will be made clear, nothing secret but it will be made known and brought tolight.17 Non est enim occultum, quod non manifestetur : nec absconditum, quod non cognoscatur, et in palam veniat.
So take care how you listen; anyone who has, wil be given more; anyone who has not, wil bedeprived even of what he thinks he has.'18 Videte ergo quomodo audiatis ? Qui enim habet, dabitur illi : et quicumque non habet, etiam quod putat se habere, auferetur ab illo.
His mother and his brothers came looking for him, but they could not get to him because of the crowd.19 Venerunt autem ad illum mater et fratres ejus, et non poterant adire eum præ turba.
He was told, 'Your mother and brothers are standing outside and want to see you.'20 Et nuntiatum est illi : Mater tua et fratres tui stant foris, volentes te videre.
But he said in answer, 'My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it intopractice.'21 Qui respondens, dixit ad eos : Mater mea et fratres mei hi sunt, qui verbum Dei audiunt et faciunt.
It happened that one day he got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, 'Let us cross over tothe other side of the lake.' So they set out,22 Factum est autem in una dierum : et ipse ascendit in naviculam, et discipuli ejus, et ait ad illos : Transfretemus trans stagnum. Et ascenderunt.
and as they sailed he fel asleep. When a squall of wind came down on the lake the boat startedshipping water and they found themselves in danger.23 Et navigantibus illis, obdormivit, et descendit procella venti in stagnum, et complebantur, et periclitabantur.
So they went to rouse him saying, 'Master! Master! We are lost!' Then he woke up and rebuked thewind and the rough water; and they subsided and it was calm again.24 Accedentes autem suscitaverunt eum, dicentes : Præceptor, perimus. At ille surgens, increpavit ventum, et tempestatem aquæ, et cessavit : et facta est tranquillitas.
He said to them, 'Where is your faith?' They were awestruck and astounded and said to one another,'Who can this be, that gives orders even to winds and waves and they obey him?'25 Dixit autem illis : Ubi est fides vestra ? Qui timentes, mirati sunt ad invicem, dicentes : Quis putas hic est, quia et ventis, et mari imperat, et obediunt ei ?
They came to land in the territory of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.26 Et navigaverunt ad regionem Gerasenorum, quæ est contra Galilæam.
He was stepping ashore when a man from the city who was possessed by devils came towards him;for a long time the man had been living with no clothes on, not in a house, but in the tombs.27 Et cum egressus esset ad terram, occurrit illi vir quidam, qui habebat dæmonium jam temporibus multis, et vestimento non induebatur, neque in domo manebat, sed in monumentis.
Catching sight of Jesus he gave a shout, fel at his feet and cried out at the top of his voice, 'What doyou want with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? I implore you, do not torture me.'28 Is, ut vidit Jesum, procidit ante illum : et exclamans voce magna, dixit : Quid mihi et tibi est, Jesu Fili Dei Altissimi ? obsecro te, ne me torqueas.
For Jesus had been tel ing the unclean spirit to come out of the man. It had seized on him a greatmany times, and then they used to secure him with chains and fetters to restrain him, but he would always breakthe fastenings, and the devil would drive him out into the wilds.29 Præcipiebat enim spiritui immundo ut exiret ab homine. Multis enim temporibus arripiebat illum, et vinciebatur catenis, et compedibus custoditus. Et ruptis vinculis agebatur a dæmonio in deserta.
Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?' He said, 'Legion' -- because many devils had gone into him.30 Interrogavit autem illum Jesus, dicens : Quod tibi nomen est ? At ille dixit : Legio : quia intraverant dæmonia multa in eum.
And these begged him not to order them to depart into the Abyss.31 Et rogabant illum ne imperaret illis ut in abyssum irent.
Now there was a large herd of pigs feeding there on the mountain, and the devils begged him to letthem go into these. So he gave them leave.32 Erat autem ibi grex porcorum multorum pascentium in monte : et rogabant eum, ut permitteret eis in illos ingredi. Et permisit illis.
The devils came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd charged down the cliff into thelake and was drowned.33 Exierunt ergo dæmonia ab homine, et intraverunt in porcos : et impetu abiit grex per præceps in stagnum, et suffocatus est.
When the swineherds saw what had happened they ran off and told their story in the city and in thecountry round about;34 Quod ut viderunt factum qui pascebant, fugerunt, et nuntiaverunt in civitatem et in villas.
and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus they found the manfrom whom the devils had gone out sitting at the feet of Jesus, wearing clothes and in his right mind; and theywere afraid.35 Exierunt autem videre quod factum est, et venerunt ad Jesum, et invenerunt hominem sedentem, a quo dæmonia exierant, vestitum ac sana mente, ad pedes ejus, et timuerunt.
Those who had witnessed it told them how the man who had been possessed came to be saved.36 Nuntiaverunt autem illis et qui viderant, quomodo sanus factus esset a legione :
The entire population of the Gerasene territory was in great fear and asked Jesus to leave them. So hegot into the boat and went back.37 et rogaverunt illum omnis multitudo regionis Gerasenorum ut discederet ab ipsis : quia magno timore tenebantur. Ipse autem ascendens navim, reversus est.
The man from whom the devils had gone out asked to be al owed to stay with him, but he sent himaway saying,38 Et rogabat illum vir, a quo dæmonia exierant, ut cum eo esset. Dimisit autem eum Jesus, dicens :
'Go back home and report al that God has done for you.' So the man went off and proclaimedthroughout the city al that Jesus had done for him.39 Redi in domum tuam, et narra quanta tibi fecit Deus. Et abiit per universam civitatem, prædicans quanta illi fecisset Jesus.
On his return Jesus was welcomed by the crowd, for they were al there waiting for him.40 Factum est autem cum rediisset Jesus, excepit illum turba : erunt enim omnes exspectantes eum.
And suddenly there came a man named Jairus, who was president of the synagogue. He fel at Jesus'feet and pleaded with him to come to his house,41 Et ecce venit vir, cui nomen Jairus, et ipse princeps synagogæ erat : et cecidit ad pedes Jesu, rogans eum ut intraret in domum ejus,
because he had an only daughter about twelve years old, who was dying. And the crowds were almoststifling Jesus as he went.42 quia unica filia erat ei fere annorum duodecim, et hæc moriebatur. Et contigit, dum iret, a turba comprimebatur.
Now there was a woman suffering from a haemorrhage for the past twelve years, whom no one hadbeen able to cure.43 Et mulier quædam erat in fluxu sanguinis ab annis duodecim, quæ in medicos erogaverat omnem substantiam suam, nec ab ullo potuit curari :
She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak; and the haemorrhage stopped at thatvery moment.44 accessit retro, et tetigit fimbriam vestimenti ejus : et confestim stetit fluxus sanguinis ejus.
Jesus said, 'Who was it that touched me?' When they al denied it, Peter said, 'Master, it is the crowdsround you, pushing.'45 Et ait Jesus : Quis est, qui me tetigit ? Negantibus autem omnibus, dixit Petrus, et qui cum illo erant : Præceptor, turbæ te comprimunt, et affligunt, et dicis : Quis me tetigit ?
But Jesus said, 'Somebody touched me. I felt that power had gone out from me.'46 Et dicit Jesus : Tetigit me aliquis : nam ego novi virtutem de me exiisse.
Seeing herself discovered, the woman came forward trembling, and fal ing at his feet explained in frontof al the people why she had touched him and how she had been cured at that very moment.47 Videns autem mulier, quia non latuit, tremens venit, et procidit ante pedes ejus : et ob quam causam tetigerit eum, indicavit coram omni populo : et quemadmodum confestim sanata sit.
'My daughter,' he said, 'your faith has saved you; go in peace.'48 At ipse dixit ei : Filia, fides tua salvam te fecit : vade in pace.
While he was stil speaking, someone arrived from the house of the president of the synagogue to say,'Your daughter has died. Do not trouble the Master any further.'49 Adhuc illo loquente, venit quidam ad principem synagogæ, dicens ei : Quia mortua est filia tua, noli vexare illum.
But Jesus heard this, and he spoke to the man, 'Do not be afraid, only have faith and she wil besaved.'50 Jesus autem, audito hoc verbo, respondit patri puellæ : Noli timere, crede tantum, et salva erit.
When he came to the house he al owed no one to go in with him except Peter and John and James, and the child's father and mother.51 Et cum venisset domum, non permisit intrare secum quemquam, nisi Petrum, et Jacobum, et Joannem, et patrem, et matrem puellæ.
They were all crying and mourning for her, but Jesus said, 'Stop crying; she is not dead, but asleep.'52 Flebant autem omnes, et plangebant illam. At ille dixit : Nolite flere : non est mortua puella, sed dormit.
But they ridiculed him, knowing she was dead.53 Et deridebant eum, scientes quod mortua esset.
But taking her by the hand himself he spoke to her, 'Child, get up.'54 Ipse autem tenens manum ejus clamavit, dicens : Puella, surge.
And her spirit returned and she got up at that very moment. Then he told them to give her something toeat.55 Et reversus est spiritus ejus, et surrexit continuo. Et jussit illi dari manducare.
Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tel anyone what had happened.56 Et stupuerunt parentes ejus, quibus præcepit ne alicui dicerent quod factum erat.
