NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Now it happened that after this he made his way through towns and villages preaching and proclaimingthe good news of the kingdom of God. With him went the Twelve,1 And it came to pass afterwards, that he travelled through the cities and towns, preaching and evangelizing the kingdom of God; and the twelve with him:
as wel as certain women who had been cured of evil spirits and ailments: Mary surnamed theMagdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,2 And certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities; Mary who is called Magdalen, out of whom seven devils were gone forth,
Joanna the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out oftheir own resources.3 And Joanna the wife of Chusa, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others who ministered unto him of their substance.
With a large crowd gathering and people from every town finding their way to him, he told this parable:4 And when a very great multitude was gathered together, and hastened out of the cities unto him, he spoke by a similitude.
'A sower went out to sow his seed. Now as he sowed, some fel on the edge of the path and wastrampled on; and the birds of the air ate it up.5 The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
Some seed fell on rock, and when it came up it withered away, having no moisture.6 And other some fell upon a rock: and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.
Some seed fell in the middle of thorns and the thorns grew with it and choked it.7 And other some fell among thorns, and the thorns growing up with it, choked it.
And some seed fell into good soil and grew and produced its crop a hundredfold.' Saying this he cried,'Anyone who has ears for listening should listen!'8 And other some fell upon good ground; and being sprung up, yielded fruit a hundredfold. Saying these things, he cried out: He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
His disciples asked him what this parable might mean,9 And his disciples asked him what this parable might be.
and he said, 'To you is granted to understand the secrets of the kingdom of God; for the rest it remainsin parables, so that they may look but not perceive, listen but not understand.10 To whom he said: To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables, that seeing they may not see, and hearing may not understand.
'This, then, is what the parable means: the seed is the word of God.11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
Those on the edge of the path are people who have heard it, and then the devil comes and carriesaway the word from their hearts in case they should believe and be saved.12 And they by the way side are they that hear; then the devil cometh, and taketh the word out of their heart, lest believing they should be saved.
Those on the rock are people who, when they first hear it, welcome the word with joy. But these haveno root; they believe for a while, and in time of trial they give up.13 Now they upon the rock, are they who when they hear, receive the word with joy: and these have no roots; for they believe for a while, and in time of temptation, they fall away.
As for the part that fell into thorns, this is people who have heard, but as they go on their way they arechoked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life and never produce any crops.14 And that which fell among thorns, are they who have heard, and going their way, are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and yield no fruit.
As for the part in the rich soil, this is people with a noble and generous heart who have heard the wordand take it to themselves and yield a harvest through their perseverance.15 But that on the good ground, are they who in a good and perfect heart, hearing the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit in patience.
'No one lights a lamp to cover it with a bowl or to put it under a bed. No, it is put on a lamp-stand sothat people may see the light when they come in.16 Now no man lighting a candle covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it upon a candlestick, that they who come in may see the light.
For nothing is hidden but it will be made clear, nothing secret but it will be made known and brought tolight.17 For there is not any thing secret that shall not be made manifest, nor hidden, that shall not be known and come abroad.
So take care how you listen; anyone who has, wil be given more; anyone who has not, wil bedeprived even of what he thinks he has.'18 Take heed therefore how you hear. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given: and whosoever hath not, that also which he thinketh he hath, shall be taken away from him.
His mother and his brothers came looking for him, but they could not get to him because of the crowd.19 And his mother and brethren came unto him; and they could not come at him for the crowd.
He was told, 'Your mother and brothers are standing outside and want to see you.'20 And it was told him: Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.
But he said in answer, 'My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it intopractice.'21 Who answering, said to them: My mother and my brethren are they who hear the word of God, and do it.
It happened that one day he got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, 'Let us cross over tothe other side of the lake.' So they set out,22 And it came to pass on a certain day that he went into a little ship with his disciples, and he said to them: Let us go over to the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
and as they sailed he fel asleep. When a squall of wind came down on the lake the boat startedshipping water and they found themselves in danger.23 And when they were sailing, he slept; and there came down a storm of wind upon the lake, and they were filled, and were in danger.
So they went to rouse him saying, 'Master! Master! We are lost!' Then he woke up and rebuked thewind and the rough water; and they subsided and it was calm again.24 And they came and awaked him, saying: Master, we perish. But he arising, rebuked the wind and the rage of the water; and it ceased, and there was a calm.
He said to them, 'Where is your faith?' They were awestruck and astounded and said to one another,'Who can this be, that gives orders even to winds and waves and they obey him?'25 And he said to them: Where is your faith? Who being afraid, wondered, saying one to another: Who is this, (think you), that he commandeth both the winds and the sea, and they obey him?
They came to land in the territory of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.26 And they sailed to the country of the Gerasens, which is over against Galilee.
He was stepping ashore when a man from the city who was possessed by devils came towards him;for a long time the man had been living with no clothes on, not in a house, but in the tombs.27 And when he was come forth to the land, there met him a certain man who had a devil now a very long time, and he wore no clothes, neither did he abide in a house, but in the sepulchres.
Catching sight of Jesus he gave a shout, fel at his feet and cried out at the top of his voice, 'What doyou want with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? I implore you, do not torture me.'28 And when he saw Jesus, he fell down before him; and crying out with a loud voice, he said: What have I to do with thee, Jesus, Son of the most high God? I beseech thee, do not torment me.
For Jesus had been tel ing the unclean spirit to come out of the man. It had seized on him a greatmany times, and then they used to secure him with chains and fetters to restrain him, but he would always breakthe fastenings, and the devil would drive him out into the wilds.29 For he commanded the unclean spirit to go out of the man. For many times it seized him, and he was bound with chains, and kept in fetters; and breaking the bonds, he was driven by the devil into the deserts.
Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?' He said, 'Legion' -- because many devils had gone into him.30 And Jesus asked him, saying: What is thy name? But he said: Legion; because many devils were entered into him.
And these begged him not to order them to depart into the Abyss.31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go into the abyss.
Now there was a large herd of pigs feeding there on the mountain, and the devils begged him to letthem go into these. So he gave them leave.32 And there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain; and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.
The devils came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd charged down the cliff into thelake and was drowned.33 The devils therefore went out of the man, and entered into the swine; and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were stifled.
When the swineherds saw what had happened they ran off and told their story in the city and in thecountry round about;34 Which when they that fed them saw done, they fled away, and told it in the city and in the villages.
and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus they found the manfrom whom the devils had gone out sitting at the feet of Jesus, wearing clothes and in his right mind; and theywere afraid.35 And they went out to see what was done; and they came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at his feet, clothed, and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
Those who had witnessed it told them how the man who had been possessed came to be saved.36 And they also that had seen, told them how he had been healed from the legion.
The entire population of the Gerasene territory was in great fear and asked Jesus to leave them. So hegot into the boat and went back.37 And all the multitude of the country of the Gerasens besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear. And he, going up into the ship, returned back again.
The man from whom the devils had gone out asked to be al owed to stay with him, but he sent himaway saying,38 Now the man, out of whom the devils were departed, besought him that he might be with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying:
'Go back home and report al that God has done for you.' So the man went off and proclaimedthroughout the city al that Jesus had done for him.39 Return to thy house, and tell how great things God hath done to thee. And he went through the whole city, publishing how great things Jesus had done to him.
On his return Jesus was welcomed by the crowd, for they were al there waiting for him.40 And it came to pass, that when Jesus was returned, the multitude received him: for they were all waiting for him.
And suddenly there came a man named Jairus, who was president of the synagogue. He fel at Jesus'feet and pleaded with him to come to his house,41 And behold there came a man whose name was Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at the feet of Jesus, beseeching him that he would come into his house:
because he had an only daughter about twelve years old, who was dying. And the crowds were almoststifling Jesus as he went.42 For he had an only daughter, almost twelve years old, and she was dying. And it happened as he went, that he was thronged by the multitudes.
Now there was a woman suffering from a haemorrhage for the past twelve years, whom no one hadbeen able to cure.43 And there was a certain woman having an issue of blood twelve years, who had bestowed all her substance on physicians, and could not be healed by any.
She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak; and the haemorrhage stopped at thatvery moment.44 She came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment; and immediately the issue of her blood stopped.
Jesus said, 'Who was it that touched me?' When they al denied it, Peter said, 'Master, it is the crowdsround you, pushing.'45 And Jesus said: Who is it that touched me? And all denying, Peter and they that were with him said: Master, the multitudes throng and press thee, and dost thou say, Who touched me?
But Jesus said, 'Somebody touched me. I felt that power had gone out from me.'46 And Jesus said: Somebody hath touched me; for I know that virtue is gone out from me.
Seeing herself discovered, the woman came forward trembling, and fal ing at his feet explained in frontof al the people why she had touched him and how she had been cured at that very moment.47 And the woman seeing that she was not hid, came trembling, and fell down before his feet, and declared before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was immediately healed.
'My daughter,' he said, 'your faith has saved you; go in peace.'48 But he said to her: Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go thy way in peace.
While he was stil speaking, someone arrived from the house of the president of the synagogue to say,'Your daughter has died. Do not trouble the Master any further.'49 As he was yet speaking, there cometh one to the ruler of the synagogue, saying to him: Thy daughter is dead, trouble him not.
But Jesus heard this, and he spoke to the man, 'Do not be afraid, only have faith and she wil besaved.'50 And Jesus hearing this word, answered the father of the maid: Fear not; believe only, and she shall be safe.
When he came to the house he al owed no one to go in with him except Peter and John and James, and the child's father and mother.51 And when he was come to the house, he suffered not any man to go in with him, but Peter and James and John, and the father and mother of the maiden.
They were all crying and mourning for her, but Jesus said, 'Stop crying; she is not dead, but asleep.'52 And all wept and mourned for her. But he said: Weep not; the maid is not dead, but sleepeth.
But they ridiculed him, knowing she was dead.53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.
But taking her by the hand himself he spoke to her, 'Child, get up.'54 But he taking her by the hand, cried out, saying: Maid, arise.
And her spirit returned and she got up at that very moment. Then he told them to give her something toeat.55 And her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And he bid them give her to eat.
Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tel anyone what had happened.56 And her parents were astonished, whom he charged to tell no man what was done.
