1 In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herodtetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the territories of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch ofAbilene,	1 En el año decimoquinto del imperio del emperador Tiberio, siendo Poncio Pilato gobernador de Judea, y Herodes tetrarca de Galilea, y su hermano Filipo tetrarca de Iturea y Traconítide, y Lisanio tetrarca de Abilene,
2 and while the high-priesthood was held by Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the sonof Zechariah, in the desert.	2 bajo el sumo sacerdocio de Anás y Caifás, vino la palabra de Dios sobre Juan, hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto.
3 He went through the whole Jordan area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,	3 Y recorrió toda la comarca del Jordán, predicando un bautismo de conversión para perdón de los pecados,
4 as it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one that cries in the desert:Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight!	4 como está escrito en el libro de los oráculos del profeta Isaías: «Voz del que grita en el desierto: | Preparad el camino del Señor, | allanad sus senderos;
5 Let every val ey be fil ed in, every mountain and hil be level ed, winding ways be straightened andrough roads made smooth,	5 los valles serán rellenados, | los montes y colinas serán rebajados; | lo torcido será enderezado, | lo escabroso será camino llano.
6 and al humanity wil see the salvation of God.	6 Y toda carne verá la salvación de Dios».
7 He said, therefore, to the crowds who came to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers, who warned you toflee from the coming retribution?	7 A los que venían para ser bautizados les decía: «¡Raza de víboras!, ¿quién os ha enseñado a escapar del castigo inminente?
8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and do not start telling yourselves, "We have Abraham as ourfather," because, I tel you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones.	8 Dad el fruto que pide la conversión. Y no os hagáis ilusiones, pensando: “Tenemos por padre a Abrahán”, pues os digo que Dios es capaz de sacar de estas piedras hijos de Abrahán.
9 Yes, even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruitwil be cut down and thrown on the fire.'	9 Ya toca el hacha la raíz de los árboles, y todo árbol que no dé buen fruto será talado y echado al fuego».
10 When al the people asked him, 'What must we do, then?'	10 La gente le preguntaba: «Entonces, ¿qué debemos hacer?».
11 he answered, 'Anyone who has two tunics must share with the one who has none, and anyone withsomething to eat must do the same.'	11 Él contestaba: «El que tenga dos túnicas, que comparta con el que no tiene; y el que tenga comida, haga lo mismo».
12 There were tax collectors, too, who came for baptism, and these said to him, 'Master, what must wedo?'	12 Vinieron también a bautizarse unos publicanos y le preguntaron: «Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer nosotros?».
13 He said to them, 'Exact no more than the appointed rate.'	13 Él les contestó: «No exijáis más de lo establecido».
14 Some soldiers asked him in their turn, 'What about us? What must we do?' He said to them, 'Nointimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!'	14 Unos soldados igualmente le preguntaban: «Y nosotros, ¿qué debemos hacer?». Él les contestó: «No hagáis extorsión ni os aprovechéis de nadie con falsas denuncias, sino contentaos con la paga».
15 A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to wonder whether Johnmight be the Christ,	15 Como el pueblo estaba expectante, y todos se preguntaban en su interior sobre Juan si no sería el Mesías,
16 so John declared before them al , 'I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, who is morepowerful than me, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit andfire.	16 Juan les respondió dirigiéndose a todos: «Yo os bautizo con agua; pero viene el que es más fuerte que yo, a quien no merezco desatarle la correa de sus sandalias. Él os bautizará con Espíritu Santo y fuego;
17 His winnowing-fan is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; butthe chaff he wil burn in a fire that will never go out.'	17 en su mano tiene el bieldo para aventar su parva, reunir su trigo en el granero y quemar la paja en una hoguera que no se apaga».
18 And he proclaimed the good news to the people with many other exhortations too.	18 Con estas y otras muchas exhortaciones, anunciaba al pueblo el Evangelio.
19 But Herod the tetrarch, censured by John for his relations with his brother's wife Herodias and for allthe other crimes he had committed,	19 El tetrarca Herodes, a quien Juan reprendía por el asunto de Herodías, esposa de su hermano, y por todas las maldades que había hecho,
20 added a further crime to al the rest by shutting John up in prison.	20 añadió a todas ellas la de encerrar a Juan en la cárcel.
21 Now it happened that when al the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptismwas at prayer, heaven opened	21 Y sucedió que, cuando todo el pueblo era bautizado, también Jesús fue bautizado; y, mientras oraba, se abrieron los cielos,
22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical form, like a dove. 23 When he began, Jesus was about thirty years old, being the son, as it was thought, of Joseph son ofHeli,	23 Jesús, al empezar, tenía unos treinta años, y se pensaba que era hijo de José, que a su vez era de Helí,
