NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
1 In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herodtetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the territories of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch ofAbilene,1 Anno autem quinto decimo im perii Tiberii Caesaris, procu rante PontioPilato Iudaeam, tetrarcha autem Galilaeae Herode, Philippo autem fratre eiustetrarcha Ituraeae et Trachonitidis regionis, et Lysania Abilinae tetrarcha,
2 and while the high-priesthood was held by Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the sonof Zechariah, in the desert.2 sub principe sacerdotum Anna et Caipha, factum est verbum Dei super IoannemZachariae filium in deserto.
3 He went through the whole Jordan area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,3 Et venit in omnem regionem circa Iordanempraedicans baptismum paenitentiae in remissionem peccatorum,
4 as it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one that cries in the desert:Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight!4 sicut scriptumest in libro sermonum Isaiae prophetae:
“ Vox clamantis in deserto:
“Parate viam Domini,
rectas facite semitas eius.
5 Let every val ey be fil ed in, every mountain and hil be level ed, winding ways be straightened andrough roads made smooth,5 Omnis vallis implebitur,
et omnis mons et collis humiliabitur;
et erunt prava in directa,
et aspera in vias planas:
6 and al humanity wil see the salvation of God.6 et videbit omnis caro salutare Dei” ”.
7 He said, therefore, to the crowds who came to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers, who warned you toflee from the coming retribution?7 Dicebat ergo ad turbas, quae exibant, ut baptizarentur ab ipso: “ Geniminaviperarum, quis ostendit vobis fugere a ventura ira?
8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and do not start telling yourselves, "We have Abraham as ourfather," because, I tel you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones.8 Facite ergo fructusdignos paenitentiae et ne coeperitis dicere in vobis ipsis: “Patrem habemusAbraham”; dico enim vobis quia potest Deus de lapidibus istis suscitareAbrahae filios.
9 Yes, even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruitwil be cut down and thrown on the fire.'9 Iam enim et securis ad radicem arborum posita est; omnis ergoarbor non faciens fructum bonum exciditur et in ignem mittitur ”.
10 When al the people asked him, 'What must we do, then?'10 Et interrogabant eum turbae dicentes: “ Quid ergo faciemus? ”.
11 he answered, 'Anyone who has two tunics must share with the one who has none, and anyone withsomething to eat must do the same.'11 Respondens autem dicebat illis: “ Qui habet duas tunicas, det non habenti; et,qui habet escas, similiter faciat ”.
12 There were tax collectors, too, who came for baptism, and these said to him, 'Master, what must wedo?'12 Venerunt autem et publicani, utbaptizarentur, et dixerunt ad illum: “ Magister, quid faciemus? ”.
13 He said to them, 'Exact no more than the appointed rate.'13 Atille dixit ad eos: “ Nihil amplius quam constitutum est vobis, faciatis ”.
14 Some soldiers asked him in their turn, 'What about us? What must we do?' He said to them, 'Nointimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!'14 Interrogabant autem eum et milites dicentes: “ Quid faciemus et nos? ”.Et ait illis: “ Neminem concutiatis neque calumniam faciatis et contentiestote stipendiis vestris ”.
15 A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to wonder whether Johnmight be the Christ,15 Existimante autem populo et cogitantibus omnibus in cordibus suis de Ioanne,ne forte ipse esset Christus,
16 so John declared before them al , 'I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, who is morepowerful than me, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit andfire.16 respondit Ioannes dicens omnibus: “ Egoquidem aqua baptizo vos. Venit autem fortior me, cuius non sum dignus solverecorrigiam calceamentorum eius: ipse vos baptizabit in Spiritu Sancto et igni;
17 His winnowing-fan is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; butthe chaff he wil burn in a fire that will never go out.'17 cuius ventilabrum in manu eius ad purgandam aream suam et ad congregandumtriticum in horreum suum, paleas autem comburet igni inexstinguibili ”.
18 And he proclaimed the good news to the people with many other exhortations too.18 Multa quidem et alia exhortans evangelizabat populum.
19 But Herod the tetrarch, censured by John for his relations with his brother's wife Herodias and for allthe other crimes he had committed,19 Herodes autemtetrarcha, cum corriperetur ab illo de Herodiade uxore fratris sui et de omnibusmalis, quae fecit Herodes,
20 added a further crime to al the rest by shutting John up in prison.20 adiecit et hoc supra omnia et inclusit Ioannem incarcere.
21 Now it happened that when al the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptismwas at prayer, heaven opened21 Factum est autem, cum baptizaretur omnis populus, et Iesu baptizato etorante, apertum est caelum,
22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical form, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven,'You are my Son; today have I fathered you.'22 et descendit Spiritus Sanctus corporali speciesicut columba super ipsum; et vox de caelo facta est: “ Tu es Filius meusdilectus; in te complacui mihi ”.
