1 In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herodtetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the territories of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch ofAbilene,	1 בִּשְׁנַת חֲמֵשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה לְמַלְכוּת הַקֵּיסַר טִיבַרְיוֹס בִּהְיוֹת פּוֹנְטִיּוֹס פִּילָטוֹס נְצִיב בִּיהוּדָה וְהוֹרְדוֹס שַׂר־רֹבַע עַל־הַגָּלִיל וְאָחִיו פִילִפּוֹס שַׂר־רֹבַע עַל־מְדִינוֹת יְטוּר וְטַרְכוֹנָה וְלוּסָנִיָּס שַׂר־רֹבַע עַל־אֲבִילִין
2 and while the high-priesthood was held by Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the sonof Zechariah, in the desert.	2 בִּימֵי הַכֹּהֲנִים הַגְּדוֹלִים חָנָן וְקַיָּפָא הָיָה דְּבַר אֱלֹהִים אֶל־יוֹחָנָן בֶּן־זְכַרְיָה בַּמִּדְבָּר
3 He went through the whole Jordan area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,	3 וַיָּבֹא אֶל־כָּל־כִּכַּר הַיַּרְדֵּן וַיִּקְרָא טְבִילַת הַתְּשׁוּבָה לִסְלִיחַת הַחֲטָאִים
4 as it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one that cries in the desert:Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight!	4 כַּכָּתוּב בְּסֵפֶר דִּבְרֵי יְשַׁעְיָהוּ הַנָּבִיא קוֹל קוֹרֵא בַּמִּדְבָּר פַּנּוּ דֶּרֶךְ יְהוָֹה יַשְּׁרוּ מְסִלּוֹתָיו
5 Let every val ey be fil ed in, every mountain and hil be level ed, winding ways be straightened andrough roads made smooth,	5 כָּל־גֶּיא יִנָּשֵׂא וְכָל־הַר וְגִבְעָה יִשְׁפָּלוּ וְהָיָה הֶעָקֹב לְמִישׁוֹר וְהָרְכָסִים לְבִקְעָה
6 and al humanity wil see the salvation of God.	6 וְרָאוּ כָל־בָּשָׂר אֵת יְשׁוּעַת אֱלֹהִים
7 He said, therefore, to the crowds who came to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers, who warned you toflee from the coming retribution?	7 וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל־הֲמוֹן הָעָם הַיֹּצְאִים לְהִטָּבֵל עַל־יָדוֹ אַתֶּם יַלְדֵי הַצִּפְעוֹנִים מִי הוֹרָה אֶתְכֶם לְהִמָּלֵט מִפְּנֵי הַקֶּצֶף הַבָּא
8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and do not start telling yourselves, "We have Abraham as ourfather," because, I tel you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones.	8 לָכֵן עֲשֹוּ פְרִי הָרָאוּי לִתְּשׁוּבָה וְאַל־תְּדַמּוּ בְנַפְשְׁכֶם לֵאמֹר אַבְרָהָם הוּא אָבִינוּ כִּי אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם כִּי מִן־הָאֲבָנִים הָאֵלֶּה יָכֹל הָאֱלֹהִים לְהָקִים בָּנִים לְאַבְרָהָם
9 Yes, even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruitwil be cut down and thrown on the fire.'	9 וּכְבָר הוּשַׂם הַגַּרְזֶן עַל־שֹׁרֶשׁ הָעֵצִים וְהִנֵּה כָל־עֵץ אֲשֶׁר אֵינֶנּוּ עֹשֶׂה פְּרִי טוֹב יִגָּדַע וְהֻשְׁלַךְ בָּאֵשׁ
10 When al the people asked him, 'What must we do, then?'	10 וַיִּשְׁאָלֵהוּ הֲמוֹן הָעָם לֵאמֹר מָה אֵפוֹא נַעֲשֶׂה
11 he answered, 'Anyone who has two tunics must share with the one who has none, and anyone withsomething to eat must do the same.'	11 וַיַּעַן וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם מִי אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ כֻּתֳּנוֹת שְׁתַּיִם הוּא יַחֲלֹק לַאֲשֶׁר אֵין־לוֹ וּמִי אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ מָזוֹן כָּכָה יַעֲשֶׂה גַּם־הוּא
12 There were tax collectors, too, who came for baptism, and these said to him, 'Master, what must wedo?'	12 וַיָּבֹאוּ גַם־מוֹכְסִים לְהִטָּבֵל וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו רַבִּי מַה־נַּעֲשֶׂה
13 He said to them, 'Exact no more than the appointed rate.'	13 וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם אַל־תִּגְבּוּ יוֹתֵר מֵחָקְכֶם
14 Some soldiers asked him in their turn, 'What about us? What must we do?' He said to them, 'Nointimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!'	14 וַיִּשְׁאָלֻהוּ גַּם־אַנְשֵׁי הַצָּבָא לֵאמֹר וַאֲנַחְנוּ מַה־נַּעֲשֶׂה וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם אִישׁ אַל־תַּעַשְׁקוּ וְאַל־תַּלְשִׁינוּ אִישׁ וִיהִי־דַי לָכֶם בִּשְׂכַרְכֶם
15 A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to wonder whether Johnmight be the Christ,	15 וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר־חִכָּה הָעָם וְכֻלָּם חשְׁבִים בְּלִבָּם לֵאמֹר אוּלַי יוֹחָנָן הוּא הַמָּשִׁיחַ
16 so John declared before them al , 'I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, who is morepowerful than me, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit andfire.	16 וַיַּעַן יוֹחָנָן וַיֹּאמֶר לְכֻלָּם הֵן־אֲנִי טוֹבֵל אֶתְכֶם בַּמָּיִם אֲבָל בּוֹא יָבוֹא הֶחָזָק מִמֶּנִּי אֲשֶׁר אֵינֶנִּי רָאוּי לְהַתִּיר אֶת־שְׂרוֹךְ נְעָלָיו הוּא יִטְבֹּל אֶתְכֶם בְּרוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ וּבָאֵשׁ
17 His winnowing-fan is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; butthe chaff he wil burn in a fire that will never go out.'	17 אֲשֶׁר הַמִּזְרֶה בְיָדוֹ לְהָבֵר אֶת־גָּרְנוֹ וְיֶאֱסֹף אֶת־דְּגָנוֹ אֶל־אוֹצָרוֹ וְאֶת־הַמֹּץ יִשְׂרְפֶנּוּ בָּאֵשׁ אֲשֶׁר לֹא־תִכְבֶּה
18 And he proclaimed the good news to the people with many other exhortations too.	18 וְכֵן עוֹד דְּבָרִים אֲחֵרִים הַרְבֵּה בִּשֵּׂר וְגַם־הִזְהִיר אֶת־הָעָם
19 But Herod the tetrarch, censured by John for his relations with his brother's wife Herodias and for allthe other crimes he had committed,	19 וְהוֹרְדוֹס שַׂר־רֹבַע הַמְּדִינָה אֲשֶׁר הוּכַח עַל־יָדוֹ עַל־אֹדוֹת הוֹרוֹדְיָה אֵשֶׁת אָחִיו פִילִפּוֹס וְעַל־אֹדוֹת כָּל־הָרָע אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה הוֹרְדוֹס
20 added a further crime to al the rest by shutting John up in prison.	20 הוֹסִיף עַל־כָּל־אֵלֶּה גַּם אֶת־זֹאת וַיַּסְגֵּר אֶת־יוֹחָנָן בְּמִשְׁמָר
21 Now it happened that when al the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptismwas at prayer, heaven opened	21 וַיְהִי בְּהִטָּבֵל כָּל־הָעָם וְגַם־יֵשׁוּעַ נִטְבָּל וּמִתְפַּלֵּל וַיִּפָּתְחוּ הַשָּׁמָיִם
22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical form, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven,'You are my Son; today have I fathered you.'	22 וַיֵּרֶד עָלָיו רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ בִּדְמוּת גּוּף כְּיוֹנָה וַיְהִי־קוֹל מִן־הַשָּׁמַיִם וַיֹּאמַר אַתָּה בְּנִי יְדִידִי בְּךָ רָצְתָה נַפְשִׁי
23 When he began, Jesus was about thirty years old, being the son, as it was thought, of Joseph son ofHeli,	23 וְהוּא יֵשׁוּעַ בְּהַחִלּוֹ הָיָה כְּבֶן־שְׁלשִׁים שָׁנָה וַיַּחְשְׁבֻהוּ לְבֶן־יוֹסֵף בֶּן־עֵלִי
24 son of Matthat, son of Levi, son of Melchi, son of Jannai, son of Joseph,	24 בֶּן־מַתָּת בֶּן־לֵוִי בֶּן־מַלְכִּי בֶּן־יַנַּי בֶּן־יוֹסֵף
