1 In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herodtetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the territories of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch ofAbilene,1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother tetrarch of Iturea, and the country of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilina;
2 and while the high-priesthood was held by Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the sonof Zechariah, in the desert.2 Under the high priests Annas and Caiphas; the word of the Lord was made unto John, the son of Zachary, in the desert.
3 He went through the whole Jordan area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,3 And he came into all the country about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of penance for the remission of sins;
4 as it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one that cries in the desert:Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight!4 As it was written in the book of the sayings of Isaias the prophet: A voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.
5 Let every val ey be fil ed in, every mountain and hil be level ed, winding ways be straightened andrough roads made smooth,5 Every valley shall be filled; and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight; and the rough ways plain;
6 and al humanity wil see the salvation of God.6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
7 He said, therefore, to the crowds who came to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers, who warned you toflee from the coming retribution?7 He said therefore to the multitudes that went forth to be baptized by him: Ye offspring of vipers, who hath shewed you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and do not start telling yourselves, "We have Abraham as ourfather," because, I tel you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones.8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of penance; and do not begin to say, We have Abraham for our father. For I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
9 Yes, even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruitwil be cut down and thrown on the fire.'9 For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit, shall be cut down and cast into the fire.
10 When al the people asked him, 'What must we do, then?'10 And the people asked him, saying: What then shall we do?
11 he answered, 'Anyone who has two tunics must share with the one who has none, and anyone withsomething to eat must do the same.'11 And he answering, said to them: He that hath two coats, let him give to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do in like manner.
12 There were tax collectors, too, who came for baptism, and these said to him, 'Master, what must wedo?'12 And the publicans also came to be baptized, and said to him: Master, what shall we do?
13 He said to them, 'Exact no more than the appointed rate.'13 But he said to them: Do nothing more than that which is appointed you.
14 Some soldiers asked him in their turn, 'What about us? What must we do?' He said to them, 'Nointimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!'14 And the soldiers also asked him, saying: And what shall we do? And he said to them: Do violence to no man; neither calumniate any man; and be content with your pay.
15 A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to wonder whether Johnmight be the Christ,15 And as the people were of opinion, and all were thinking in their hearts of John, that perhaps he might be the Christ;
16 so John declared before them al , 'I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, who is morepowerful than me, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit andfire.16 John answered, saying unto all: I indeed baptize you with water; but there shall come one mightier that I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to loose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
17 His winnowing-fan is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; butthe chaff he wil burn in a fire that will never go out.'17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.
18 And he proclaimed the good news to the people with many other exhortations too.18 And many other things exhorting, did he preach to the people.
19 But Herod the tetrarch, censured by John for his relations with his brother's wife Herodias and for allthe other crimes he had committed,19 But Herod the tetrarch, when he was reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done;
20 added a further crime to al the rest by shutting John up in prison.20 He added this also above all, and shut up John in prison.
21 Now it happened that when al the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptismwas at prayer, heaven opened21 Now it came to pass, when all the people were baptized, that Jesus also being baptized and praying, heaven was opened;
22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical form, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven,'You are my Son; today have I fathered you.'22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape, as a dove upon him; and a voice came from heaven: Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
23 When he began, Jesus was about thirty years old, being the son, as it was thought, of Joseph son ofHeli,23 And Jesus himself was beginning about the age of thirty years; being (as it was supposed) the son of Joseph, who was of Heli, who was of Mathat,
24 son of Matthat, son of Levi, son of Melchi, son of Jannai, son of Joseph,24 Who was of Levi, who was of Melchi, who was of Janne, who was of Joseph,
25 son of Mattathias, son of Amos, son of Nahum, son of Esli, son of Naggai,25 Who was of Mathathias, who was of Amos, who was of Nahum, who was of Hesli, who was of Nagge,
