1 In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herodtetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the territories of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch ofAbilene,	1 בשנת חמש עשרה למלכות הקיסר טיבריוס בהיות פונטיוס פילטוס הגמון ביהודה והורדוס שר רבע על הגליל ואחיו פילפוס שר רבע על מדינות יטור וטרכונה ולוסניס שר רבע על אבילין
2 and while the high-priesthood was held by Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the sonof Zechariah, in the desert.	2 בימי הכהנים הגדולים חנן וקיפא היה דבר אלהים אל יוחנן בן זכריה במדבר
3 He went through the whole Jordan area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,	3 ויבא אל כל ככר הירדן ויקרא טבילת התשובה לסליחת החטאים
4 as it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one that cries in the desert:Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight!	4 ככתוב בספר דברי ישעיהו הנביא קול קורא במדבר פנו דרך יהוה ישרו מסלותיו
5 Let every val ey be fil ed in, every mountain and hil be level ed, winding ways be straightened andrough roads made smooth,	5 כל גיא ינשא וכל הר וגבעה ישפלו והיה העקב למישור והרכסים לבקעה
6 and al humanity wil see the salvation of God.	6 וראו כל בשר את ישועת אלהים
7 He said, therefore, to the crowds who came to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers, who warned you toflee from the coming retribution?	7 ויאמר אל המון העם היצאים להטבל על ידו אתם ילדי הצפעונים מי הורה אתכם להמלט מפני הקצף הבא
8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and do not start telling yourselves, "We have Abraham as ourfather," because, I tel you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones.	8 לכן עשו פרי הראוי לתשובה ואל תדמו בנפשכם לאמר אברהם הוא אבינו כי אני אמר לכם כי מן האבנים האלה יכל האלהים להקים בנים לאברהם
9 Yes, even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruitwil be cut down and thrown on the fire.'	9 וכבר הושם הגרזן על שרש העצים והנה כל עץ אשר איננו עשה פרי טוב יגדע והשלך באש
10 When al the people asked him, 'What must we do, then?'	10 וישאלהו המון העם לאמר מה אפוא נעשה
11 he answered, 'Anyone who has two tunics must share with the one who has none, and anyone withsomething to eat must do the same.'	11 ויען ויאמר אליהם מי אשר לו כתנות שתים הוא יחלק לאשר אין לו ומי אשר לו מזון ככה יעשה גם הוא
12 There were tax collectors, too, who came for baptism, and these said to him, 'Master, what must wedo?'	12 ויבאו גם מוכסים להטבל ויאמרו אליו רבי מה נעשה
13 He said to them, 'Exact no more than the appointed rate.'	13 ויאמר אליהם אל תגבו יותר מחקכם
14 Some soldiers asked him in their turn, 'What about us? What must we do?' He said to them, 'Nointimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!'	14 וישאלהו גם אנשי הצבא לאמר ואנחנו מה נעשה ויאמר אליהם איש אל תזעזעו ואל תלשינו איש ויהי די לכם בשכרכם
15 A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to wonder whether Johnmight be the Christ,	15 ויהי כאשר חכה העם וכלם חשבים בלבם לאמר אולי יוחנן הוא המשיח
16 so John declared before them al , 'I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, who is morepowerful than me, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit andfire.	16 ויען יוחנן ויאמר לכלם הן אני טובל אתכם במים אבל בוא יבוא החזק ממני אשר אינני כדי להתיר את שרוך נעליו הוא יטבל אתכם ברוח הקדש ובאש
17 His winnowing-fan is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; butthe chaff he wil burn in a fire that will never go out.'	17 אשר המזרה בידו להבר את גרנו ויאסף את דגנו אל אוצרו ואת המץ ישרפנו באש אשר לא תכבה
18 And he proclaimed the good news to the people with many other exhortations too.	18 וכן עוד דברים אחרים הרבה בשר וגם הזהיר את העם
19 But Herod the tetrarch, censured by John for his relations with his brother's wife Herodias and for allthe other crimes he had committed,	19 והורדוס שר רבע המדינה אשר הוכח על ידו על אדות הורודיה אשת אחיו פילפוס ועל אדות כל הרע אשר עשה הורדוס
20 added a further crime to al the rest by shutting John up in prison.	20 הוסיף על כל אלה גם את זאת ויסגר את יוחנן במשמר
21 Now it happened that when al the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptismwas at prayer, heaven opened	21 ויהי בהטבל כל העם וגם ישוע נטבל ומתפלל ויפתחו השמים
22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical form, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven,'You are my Son; today have I fathered you.'	22 וירד עליו רוח הקדש בדמות גוף כיונה ויהי קול מן השמים ויאמר אתה בני ידידי בך רצתה נפשי
23 When he began, Jesus was about thirty years old, being the son, as it was thought, of Joseph son ofHeli,	23 והוא ישוע בהחלו היה כבן שלשים שנה ויחשבהו לבן יוסף בן עלי
24 son of Matthat, son of Levi, son of Melchi, son of Jannai, son of Joseph,	24 בן מתת בן לוי בן מלכי בן יני בן יוסף
25 son of Mattathias, son of Amos, son of Nahum, son of Esli, son of Naggai,	25 בן מתתיה בן אמוץ בן נחום בן חסלי בן נגי
