NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herodtetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the territories of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch ofAbilene,1 Anno autem quintodecimo imperii Tiberii Cæsaris, procurante Pontio Pilato Judæam, tetrarcha autem Galilææ Herode, Philippo autem fratre ejus tetrarcha Iturææ, et Trachonitidis regionis, et Lysania Abilinæ tetrarcha,
and while the high-priesthood was held by Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the sonof Zechariah, in the desert.2 sub principibus sacerdotum Anna et Caipha : factum est verbum Domini super Joannem, Zachariæ filium, in deserto.
He went through the whole Jordan area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,3 Et venit in omnem regionem Jordanis, prædicans baptismum pœnitentiæ in remissionem peccatorum,
as it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one that cries in the desert:Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight!4 sicut scriptum est in libro sermonum Isaiæ prophetæ : Vox clamantis in deserto :
Parate viam Domini ; rectas facite semitas ejus :
Let every val ey be fil ed in, every mountain and hil be level ed, winding ways be straightened andrough roads made smooth,5 omnis vallis implebitur,
et omnis mons, et collis humiliabitur :
et erunt prava in directa, et aspera in vias planas :
and al humanity wil see the salvation of God.6 et videbit omnis caro salutare Dei.
He said, therefore, to the crowds who came to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers, who warned you toflee from the coming retribution?7 Dicebat ergo ad turbas quæ exibant ut baptizarentur ab ipso : Genimina viperarum, quis ostendit vobis fugere a ventura ira ?
Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and do not start telling yourselves, "We have Abraham as ourfather," because, I tel you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones.8 Facite ergo fructus dignos pœnitentiæ, et ne cœperitis dicere : Patrem habemus Abraham. Dico enim vobis quia potens est Deus de lapidibus istis suscitare filios Abrahæ.
Yes, even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruitwil be cut down and thrown on the fire.'9 Jam enim securis ad radicem arborum posita est. Omnis ergo arbor non faciens fructum bonum, excidetur, et in ignem mittetur.
When al the people asked him, 'What must we do, then?'10 Et interrogabant eum turbæ, dicentes : Quid ergo faciemus ?
he answered, 'Anyone who has two tunics must share with the one who has none, and anyone withsomething to eat must do the same.'11 Respondens autem dicebat illis : Qui habet duas tunicas, det non habenti : et qui habet escas, similiter faciat.
There were tax collectors, too, who came for baptism, and these said to him, 'Master, what must wedo?'12 Venerunt autem et publicani ut baptizarentur, et dixerunt ad illum : Magister, quid faciemus ?
He said to them, 'Exact no more than the appointed rate.'13 At ille dixit ad eos : Nihil amplius, quam quod constitutum est vobis, faciatis.
Some soldiers asked him in their turn, 'What about us? What must we do?' He said to them, 'Nointimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!'14 Interrogabant autem eum et milites, dicentes : Quid faciemus et nos ? Et ait illis : Neminem concutiatis, neque calumniam faciatis : et contenti estote stipendiis vestris.
A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to wonder whether Johnmight be the Christ,15 Existimante autem populo, et cogitantibus omnibus in cordibus suis de Joanne, ne forte ipse esset Christus,
so John declared before them al , 'I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, who is morepowerful than me, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit andfire.16 respondit Joannes, dicens omnibus : Ego quidem aqua baptizo vos : veniet autem fortior me, cujus non sum dignus solvere corrigiam calceamentorum ejus : ipse vos baptizabit in Spiritu Sancto et igni :
His winnowing-fan is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; butthe chaff he wil burn in a fire that will never go out.'17 cujus ventilabrum in manu ejus, et purgabit aream suam, et congregabit triticum in horreum suum, paleas autem comburet igni inextinguibili.
And he proclaimed the good news to the people with many other exhortations too.18 Multa quidem et alia exhortans evangelizabat populo.
But Herod the tetrarch, censured by John for his relations with his brother's wife Herodias and for allthe other crimes he had committed,19 Herodes autem tetrarcha cum corriperetur ab illo de Herodiade uxore fratris sui, et de omnibus malis quæ fecit Herodes,
added a further crime to al the rest by shutting John up in prison.20 adjecit et hoc super omnia, et inclusit Joannem in carcere.
Now it happened that when al the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptismwas at prayer, heaven opened21 Factum est autem cum baptizaretur omnis populus, et Jesu baptizato, et orante, apertum est cælum :
and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical form, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven,'You are my Son; today have I fathered you.'22 et descendit Spiritus Sanctus corporali specie sicut columba in ipsum : et vox de cælo facta est : Tu es filius meus dilectus, in te complacui mihi.
