Luke 23

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 The whole assembly then rose, and they brought him before Pilate.	1 Tutta quell'assemblea si alzò e lo condussero davanti a Pilato.
2 They began their accusation by saying, 'We found this man inciting our people to revolt, opposingpayment of the tribute to Caesar, and claiming to be Christ, a king.'	2 Là cominciarono ad accusarlo: "Quest'uomo l'abbiamo trovato mentre sobillava la nostra gente, proibiva di pagare i tributi a Cesare e affermava di essere il Cristo re".
3 Pilate put to him this question, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' He replied, 'It is you who say it.'	3 Allora Pilato lo interrogò: "Sei tu il re dei Giudei?". Egli rispose: "Tu lo dici".
4 Pilate then said to the chief priests and the crowd, 'I find no case against this man.'	4 Pilato si rivolse ai sommi sacerdoti e alla folla e disse: "Non trovo nessun motivo di condanna in quest'uomo".
5 But they persisted, 'He is inflaming the people with his teaching all over Judaea and al the way fromGalilee, where he started, down to here.'	5 Ma quelli insistevano: "Costui solleva il popolo, insegnando per tutta la Giudea, dopo aver cominciato dalla Galilea fino a qui".
6 When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man were a Galilean;	6 Quando Pilato udì ciò, domandò se quell'uomo fosse galileo,
7 and finding that he came under Herod's jurisdiction, he passed him over to Herod, who was also inJerusalem at that time.	7 e venuto a sapere che apparteneva alla giurisdizione di Erode, lo fece condurre da Erode, che proprio in quei giorni si trovava a Gerusalemme.
8 Herod was delighted to see Jesus; he had heard about him and had been wanting for a long time toset eyes on him; moreover, he was hoping to see some miracle worked by him.	8 Quando vide Gesù, Erode se ne rallegrò molto. Da molto tempo infatti desiderava vederlo per averne sentito parlare e sperava di vederlo compiere qualche miracolo.
9 So he questioned him at some length, but without getting any reply.	9 Lo interrogò con insistenza, ma Gesù non rispose nulla.
10 Meanwhile the chief priests and the scribes were there, vigorously pressing their accusations.	10 Intanto i sommi sacerdoti e i dottori della legge, che erano presenti, insistevano nell'accusarlo.
11 Then Herod, together with his guards, treated him with contempt and made fun of him; he put a richcloak on him and sent him back to Pilate.	11 Erode, insieme ai suoi soldati, lo schernì; gli mise addosso una veste bianca e lo rimandò a Pilato.
12 And though Herod and Pilate had been enemies before, they were reconciled that same day.	12 Erode e Pilato, che prima erano nemici, da quel giorno diventarono amici.
13 Pilate then summoned the chief priests and the leading men and the people.	13 Pilato, riuniti i sommi sacerdoti, le autorità e il popolo, disse loro:
14 He said to them, 'You brought this man before me as a popular agitator. Now I have gone into thematter myself in your presence and found no grounds in the man for any of the charges you bring against him.	14 "Mi avete presentato quest'uomo come sobillatore del popolo. Ebbene, l'ho esaminato alla vostra presenza, ma non ho trovato in lui nessuna delle colpe di cui l'accusate;
15 Nor has Herod either, since he has sent him back to us. As you can see, the man has done nothingthat deserves death,	15 e neppure Erode, perché ce l'ha rimandato. Dunque egli non ha fatto nulla che meriti la morte.
16 so I shal have him flogged and then let him go.'	16 Perciò, dopo averlo fatto frustare, lo lascerò libero".
17	17 Per la festa di Pasqua era necessario che egli mettesse loro in libertà qualcuno.
18 But as one man they howled, 'Away with him! Give us Barabbas!'	18 Tutti insieme si misero a gridare: "A morte costui! Vogliamo libero Barabba!".
19 (This man had been thrown into prison because of a riot in the city and murder.)	19 Questi era stato messo in prigione per una sommossa scoppiata in città e per omicidio.
20 In his desire to set Jesus free, Pilate addressed them again,	20 Pilato si rivolse di nuovo a loro, con il proposito di liberare Gesù.
21 but they shouted back, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!'	21 Ma essi gridavano: "Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo!".
22 And for the third time he spoke to them, 'But what harm has this man done? I have found no caseagainst him that deserves death, so I shal have him flogged and then let him go.'	22 Egli, per la terza volta, disse loro: "Ma che male ha fatto costui? Non ho trovato in lui nessuna colpa che meriti la morte. Perciò lo farò frustare e poi lo lascerò libero".
23 But they kept on shouting at the top of their voices, demanding that he should be crucified. And theirshouts kept growing louder.	23 Ma essi insistevano a gran voce, chiedendo che fosse crocifisso. E le loro grida si facevano sempre più forti.
24 Pilate then gave his verdict: their demand was to be granted.	24 Pilato allora decretò che fosse eseguita la loro richiesta.
25 He released the man they asked for, who had been imprisoned because of rioting and murder, andhanded Jesus over to them to deal with as they pleased.	25 Rilasciò quello che era stato messo in prigione per sommossa e omicidio, e che quelli richiedevano, ma consegnò Gesù alla loro volontà.
26 As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in fromthe country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus.	26 Mentre lo conducevano via, fermarono un certo Simone di Cirene, che tornava dai campi, gli misero addosso la croce da portare dietro a Gesù.
27 Large numbers of people followed him, and women too, who mourned and lamented for him.	27 Lo seguiva una gran moltitudine di popolo e di donne che si battevano il petto e piangevano per lui.
28 But Jesus turned to them and said, 'Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep rather foryourselves and for your children.	28 Gesù allora si voltò verso di loro e disse: "Figlie di Gerusalemme, non piangete per me; piangete piuttosto per voi stesse e per i vostri figli.
29 For look, the days are surely coming when people wil say, "Blessed are those who are barren, thewombs that have never borne children, the breasts that have never suckled!"	29 Ecco, verranno giorni nei quali si dirà: Beate le sterili e quelle che non hanno mai generato e le mammelle che non hanno allattato.
30 Then they wil begin to say to the mountains, "Fal on us!"; to the hills, "Cover us!"	30 Allora la gente comincerà a dire ai monti: "Cadete su di noi!" e alle colline: "Ricopriteci!".
31 For if this is what is done to green wood, what wil be done when the wood is dry?'	31 Perché, se si tratta così il legno verde, che ne sarà del legno secco?".
32 Now they were also leading out two others, criminals, to be executed with him.	32 Insieme a lui venivano condotti a morte anche due delinquenti.
33 When they reached the place called The Skul , there they crucified him and the two criminals, one onhis right, the other on his left.	33 Quando giunsero sul posto, detto luogo del Cranio, là crocifissero lui e i due malfattori, uno a destra e l'altro a sinistra.
34 Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing.' Then they cast lots to shareout his clothing.	34 Gesù diceva: "Padre, perdona loro, perché non sanno quello che fanno". Intanto, spartendo le sue vesti, le tirarono a sorte.
35 The people stayed there watching. As for the leaders, they jeered at him with the words, 'He savedothers, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.'	35 Il popolo stava a guardare. I capi del popolo invece lo schernivano dicendo: "Ha salvato gli altri, salvi se stesso se è il Cristo di Dio, l'Eletto".
36 The soldiers mocked him too, coming up to him, offering him vinegar,	36 Anche i soldati lo schernivano; si accostavano a lui per dargli dell'aceto
37 and saying, 'If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.'	37 e gli dicevano: "Se tu sei il re dei Giudei, salva te stesso".
38 Above him there was an inscription: 'This is the King of the Jews'.	38 Sopra il suo capo c'era anche una scritta: "Questi è il re dei Giudei".
39 One of the criminals hanging there abused him: 'Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us aswel .'	39 Uno dei malfattori che erano stati crocifissi, lo insultava: "Non sei tu il Cristo? Salva te stesso e noi!".
40 But the other spoke up and rebuked him. 'Have you no fear of God at al ?' he said. 'You got the samesentence as he did,	40 Ma l'altro lo rimproverava: "Non hai proprio nessun timore di Dio, tu che stai subendo la stessa condanna?
41 but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong.'	41 Noi giustamente, perché riceviamo la giusta pena per le nostre azioni, lui invece non ha fatto nulla di male".
42 Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.'	42 Poi aggiunse: "Gesù, ricòrdati di me, quando andrai nel tuo regno".
43 He answered him, 'In truth I tel you, today you wil be with me in paradise.'	43 Gesù gli rispose: "In verità ti dico: oggi, sarai con me in paradiso".
44 It was now about the sixth hour and the sun's light failed, so that darkness came over the whole landuntil the ninth hour.	44 Era quasi l'ora sesta, quando si fece buio su tutta la terra fino all'ora nona,
45 The veil of the Sanctuary was torn right down the middle.	45 essendosi eclissato il sole. Il velo del tempio si squarciò a metà.
46 Jesus cried out in a loud voice saying, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.' With these wordshe breathed his last.	46 E Gesù, gridando a gran voce, disse: "Padre, nelle tue mani raccomando il mio spirito". Detto questo, spirò.
47 When the centurion saw what had taken place, he gave praise to God and said, 'Truly, this was anupright man.'	47 Il centurione, vedendo l'accaduto, glorificava Dio: "Certamente quest'uomo era giusto".
48 And when al the crowds who had gathered for the spectacle saw what had happened, they wenthome beating their breasts.	48 Anche tutti quelli che erano convenuti per questo spettacolo, davanti a questi fatti se ne tornarono a casa battendosi il petto.
49 All his friends stood at a distance; so also did the women who had accompanied him from Galilee andsaw all this happen.	49 Tutti i suoi amici e le donne che lo avevano seguito fin dalla Galilea se ne stavano lontano, osservando tutto ciò che accadeva.
50 And now a member of the Council arrived, a good and upright man named Joseph.	50 C'era un uomo di nome Giuseppe, membro del sinedrio, uomo giusto e buono,
51 He had not consented to what the others had planned and carried out. He came from Arimathaea, aJewish town, and he lived in the hope of seeing the kingdom of God.	51 che non si era associato alla loro deliberazione e alla loro azione. Era nativo di Arimatea, una città dei Giudei, e aspettava il regno di Dio.
52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.	52 Egli si presentò a Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesù.
53 He then took it down, wrapped it in a shroud and put it in a tomb which was hewn in stone and whichhad never held a body.	53 Lo depose dalla croce, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo e lo mise in un sepolcro, scavato nella roccia, dove non era stato posto ancora nessuno.
54 It was Preparation day and the Sabbath was beginning to grow light.	54 Era la vigilia di Pasqua, e già cominciava a sorgere il sabato.
55 Meanwhile the women who had come from Galilee with Jesus were following behind. They took noteof the tomb and how the body had been laid.	55 Le donne che erano venute con Gesù dalla Galilea, seguirono Giuseppe e videro il sepolcro e come vi era stato deposto il corpo di Gesù.
56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. And on the Sabbath day they rested, as theLaw required.	56 Poi se ne tornarono a casa per preparare aromi e unguenti. Il giorno di sabato osservarono il riposo, come prescrive la legge.
