NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
The whole assembly then rose, and they brought him before Pilate.1 And the whole multitude of them rising up, led him to Pilate.
They began their accusation by saying, 'We found this man inciting our people to revolt, opposingpayment of the tribute to Caesar, and claiming to be Christ, a king.'2 And they began to accuse him, saying: We have found this man perverting our nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he is Christ the king.
Pilate put to him this question, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' He replied, 'It is you who say it.'3 And Pilate asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Jews? But he answering, said: Thou sayest it.
Pilate then said to the chief priests and the crowd, 'I find no case against this man.'4 And Pilate said to the chief priests and to the multitudes: I find no cause in this man.
But they persisted, 'He is inflaming the people with his teaching all over Judaea and al the way fromGalilee, where he started, down to here.'5 But they were more earnest, saying: He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.
When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man were a Galilean;6 But Pilate hearing Galilee, asked if the man were of Galilee?
and finding that he came under Herod's jurisdiction, he passed him over to Herod, who was also inJerusalem at that time.7 And when he understood that he was of Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him away to Herod, who was also himself at Jerusalem, in those days.
Herod was delighted to see Jesus; he had heard about him and had been wanting for a long time toset eyes on him; moreover, he was hoping to see some miracle worked by him.8 And Herod, seeing Jesus, was very glad; for he was desirous of a long time to see him, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to see some sign wrought by him.
So he questioned him at some length, but without getting any reply.9 And he questioned him in many words. But he answered him nothing.
Meanwhile the chief priests and the scribes were there, vigorously pressing their accusations.10 And the chief priests and the scribes stood by, earnestly accusing him.
Then Herod, together with his guards, treated him with contempt and made fun of him; he put a richcloak on him and sent him back to Pilate.11 And Herod with his army set him at nought, and mocked him, putting on him a white garment, and sent him back to Pilate.
And though Herod and Pilate had been enemies before, they were reconciled that same day.12 And Herod and Pilate were made friends, that same day; for before they were enemies one to another.
Pilate then summoned the chief priests and the leading men and the people.13 And Pilate, calling together the chief priests, and the magistrates, and the people,
He said to them, 'You brought this man before me as a popular agitator. Now I have gone into thematter myself in your presence and found no grounds in the man for any of the charges you bring against him.14 Said to them: You have presented unto me this man, as one that perverteth the people; and behold I, having examined him before you, find no cause in this man, in those things wherein you accuse him.
Nor has Herod either, since he has sent him back to us. As you can see, the man has done nothingthat deserves death,15 No, nor Herod neither. For I sent you to him, and behold, nothing worthy of death is done to him.
so I shal have him flogged and then let him go.'16 I will chastise him therefore, and release him.
17 Now of necessity he was to release unto them one upon the feast day.
But as one man they howled, 'Away with him! Give us Barabbas!'18 But the whole multitude together cried out, saying: Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:
(This man had been thrown into prison because of a riot in the city and murder.)19 Who, for a certain sedition made in the city, and for a murder, was cast into prison.
In his desire to set Jesus free, Pilate addressed them again,20 And Pilate again spoke to them, desiring to release Jesus.
but they shouted back, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!'21 But they cried again, saying: Crucify him, crucify him.
And for the third time he spoke to them, 'But what harm has this man done? I have found no caseagainst him that deserves death, so I shal have him flogged and then let him go.'22 And he said to them the third time: Why, what evil hath this man done? I find no cause of death in him. I will chastise him therefore, and let him go.
But they kept on shouting at the top of their voices, demanding that he should be crucified. And theirshouts kept growing louder.23 But they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified; and their voices prevailed.
Pilate then gave his verdict: their demand was to be granted.24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
He released the man they asked for, who had been imprisoned because of rioting and murder, andhanded Jesus over to them to deal with as they pleased.25 And he released unto them him who for murder and sedition, had been cast into prison, whom they had desired; but Jesus he delivered up to their will.
As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in fromthe country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus.26 And as they led him away, they laid hold of one Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country; and they laid the cross on him to carry after Jesus.
Large numbers of people followed him, and women too, who mourned and lamented for him.27 And there followed him a great multitude of people, and of women, who bewailed and lamented him.
But Jesus turned to them and said, 'Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep rather foryourselves and for your children.28 But Jesus turning to them, said: Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not over me; but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
For look, the days are surely coming when people wil say, "Blessed are those who are barren, thewombs that have never borne children, the breasts that have never suckled!"29 For behold, the days shall come, wherein they will say: Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the paps that have not given suck.
Then they wil begin to say to the mountains, "Fal on us!"; to the hills, "Cover us!"30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains: Fall upon us; and to the hills: Cover us.
For if this is what is done to green wood, what wil be done when the wood is dry?'31 For if in the green wood they do these things, what shall be done in the dry?
Now they were also leading out two others, criminals, to be executed with him.32 And there were also two other malefactors led with him to be put to death.
When they reached the place called The Skul , there they crucified him and the two criminals, one onhis right, the other on his left.33 And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, they crucified him there; and the robbers, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing.' Then they cast lots to shareout his clothing.34 And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. But they, dividing his garments, cast lots.
The people stayed there watching. As for the leaders, they jeered at him with the words, 'He savedothers, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.'35 And the people stood beholding, and the rulers with them derided him, saying: He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the elect of God.
The soldiers mocked him too, coming up to him, offering him vinegar,36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,
and saying, 'If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.'37 And saying: If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
Above him there was an inscription: 'This is the King of the Jews'.38 And there was also a superscription written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
One of the criminals hanging there abused him: 'Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us aswel .'39 And one of those robbers who were hanged, blasphemed him, saying: If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
But the other spoke up and rebuked him. 'Have you no fear of God at al ?' he said. 'You got the samesentence as he did,40 But the other answering, rebuked him, saying: Neither dost thou fear God, seeing thou art condemned under the same condemnation?
but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong.'41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man hath done no evil.
Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.'42 And he said to Jesus: Lord, remember me when thou shalt come into thy kingdom.
He answered him, 'In truth I tel you, today you wil be with me in paradise.'43 And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise.
It was now about the sixth hour and the sun's light failed, so that darkness came over the whole landuntil the ninth hour.44 And it was almost the sixth hour; and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
The veil of the Sanctuary was torn right down the middle.45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
Jesus cried out in a loud voice saying, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.' With these wordshe breathed his last.46 And Jesus crying out with a loud voice, said: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And saying this, he gave up the ghost.
When the centurion saw what had taken place, he gave praise to God and said, 'Truly, this was anupright man.'47 Now the centurion, seeing what was done, glorified God, saying: Indeed this was a just man.
And when al the crowds who had gathered for the spectacle saw what had happened, they wenthome beating their breasts.48 And all the multitude of them that were come together to that sight, and saw the things that were done, returned striking their breasts.
All his friends stood at a distance; so also did the women who had accompanied him from Galilee andsaw all this happen.49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that had followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
And now a member of the Council arrived, a good and upright man named Joseph.50 And behold there was a man named Joseph, who was a counsellor, a good and just man,
He had not consented to what the others had planned and carried out. He came from Arimathaea, aJewish town, and he lived in the hope of seeing the kingdom of God.51 (The same had not consented to their counsel and doings;) of Arimathea, a city of Judea; who also himself looked for the kingdom of God.
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.52 This man went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
He then took it down, wrapped it in a shroud and put it in a tomb which was hewn in stone and whichhad never held a body.53 And taking him down, he wrapped him in fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre that was hewed in stone, wherein never yet any man had been laid.
It was Preparation day and the Sabbath was beginning to grow light.54 And it was the day of the Parasceve, and the sabbath drew on.
Meanwhile the women who had come from Galilee with Jesus were following behind. They took noteof the tomb and how the body had been laid.55 And the women that were come with him from Galilee, following after, saw the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. And on the Sabbath day they rested, as theLaw required.56 And returning, they prepared spices and ointments; and on the sabbath day they rested, according to the commandment.
