NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
The whole assembly then rose, and they brought him before Pilate.1 Et surgens omnis multitudo eorum duxerunt illum ad Pi latum.
They began their accusation by saying, 'We found this man inciting our people to revolt, opposingpayment of the tribute to Caesar, and claiming to be Christ, a king.'2 Coeperuntautem accusare illum dicentes: “ Hunc invenimus subvertentem gentem nostram etprohibentem tributa dare Caesari et dicentem se Christum regem esse ”.
Pilate put to him this question, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' He replied, 'It is you who say it.'3 Pilatus autem interrogavit eum dicens: “ Tu es rex Iudaeorum? ”. At illerespondens ait: “ Tu dicis ”.
Pilate then said to the chief priests and the crowd, 'I find no case against this man.'4 Ait autem Pilatus ad principes sacerdotum etturbas: “ Nihil invenio causae in hoc homine ”.
But they persisted, 'He is inflaming the people with his teaching all over Judaea and al the way fromGalilee, where he started, down to here.'5 At illi invalescebantdicentes: “ Commovet populum docens per universam Iudaeam et in cipiens aGalilaea usque huc! ”.
When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man were a Galilean;6 Pilatus autem audiens interrogavit si homo Galilaeusesset;
and finding that he came under Herod's jurisdiction, he passed him over to Herod, who was also inJerusalem at that time.7 et ut cognovit quod de Herodis potestate esset, remisit eum ad Herodem, qui et ipse Hierosolymis erat illis diebus.
Herod was delighted to see Jesus; he had heard about him and had been wanting for a long time toset eyes on him; moreover, he was hoping to see some miracle worked by him.8 Herodes autem, viso Iesu, gavisusest valde; erat enim cupiens ex multo tempore videre eum, eo quod audiret deillo et sperabat signum aliquod videre ab eo fieri.
So he questioned him at some length, but without getting any reply.9 Interrogabat autem illummultis sermonibus; at ipse nihil illi respondebat.
Meanwhile the chief priests and the scribes were there, vigorously pressing their accusations.10 Stabant etiam principessacerdotum et scribae constanter accusantes eum.
Then Herod, together with his guards, treated him with contempt and made fun of him; he put a richcloak on him and sent him back to Pilate.11 Sprevit autem illum Herodescum exercitu suo et illusit indutum veste alba et remisit ad Pilatum.
And though Herod and Pilate had been enemies before, they were reconciled that same day.12 Factisunt autem amici inter se Herodes et Pilatus in ipsa die; nam antea inimicierant ad invicem.
Pilate then summoned the chief priests and the leading men and the people.13 Pilatus autem, convocatis principibus sacerdotum et magistratibus et plebe,
He said to them, 'You brought this man before me as a popular agitator. Now I have gone into thematter myself in your presence and found no grounds in the man for any of the charges you bring against him.14 dixit ad illos: “ Obtulistis mihi hunc hominem quasi avertentem populum, etecce ego coram vobis interrogans nullam causam inveni in homine isto ex his, inquibus eum accusatis,
Nor has Herod either, since he has sent him back to us. As you can see, the man has done nothingthat deserves death,15 sed
neque Herodes; remisit enim illum ad nos. Et ecce nihil dignum morte actum estei.
so I shal have him flogged and then let him go.'16 Emendatum ergo illum dimittam ”.
17
But as one man they howled, 'Away with him! Give us Barabbas!'18 Exclamavit autem universaturba dicens: “ Tolle hunc et dimitte nobis Barabbam! ”,
(This man had been thrown into prison because of a riot in the city and murder.)19 qui erat propterseditionem quandam factam in civitate et homicidium missus in carcerem.
In his desire to set Jesus free, Pilate addressed them again,20 Iterum autem Pilatus locutus est ad illos volens dimittere Iesum,
but they shouted back, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!'21 at illisucclamabant dicentes: “ Crucifige, crucifige illum! ”.
And for the third time he spoke to them, 'But what harm has this man done? I have found no caseagainst him that deserves death, so I shal have him flogged and then let him go.'22 Ille autem tertiodixit ad illos: “ Quid enim mali fecit iste? Nullam causam mortis invenio ineo; corripiam ergo illum et dimittam ”.
But they kept on shouting at the top of their voices, demanding that he should be crucified. And theirshouts kept growing louder.23 At illi instabant vocibus magnispostulantes, ut crucifigeretur, et invalescebant voces eorum.
Pilate then gave his verdict: their demand was to be granted.24 Et Pilatusadiudicavit fieri petitionem eorum:
He released the man they asked for, who had been imprisoned because of rioting and murder, andhanded Jesus over to them to deal with as they pleased.25 dimisit autem eum, qui propter seditionemet homicidium missus fuerat in carcerem, quem petebant; Iesum vero tradiditvoluntati eorum.
As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in fromthe country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus.26 Et cum abducerent eum, apprehenderunt Simonem quendam Cyrenensem venientem devilla et imposuerunt illi crucem portare post Iesum.
Large numbers of people followed him, and women too, who mourned and lamented for him.27 Sequebatur autem illum multa turba populi et mulierum, quae plangebant etlamentabant eum.
But Jesus turned to them and said, 'Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep rather foryourselves and for your children.28 Conversus autem ad illas Iesus dixit: “ Filiae Ierusalem, nolite flere super me, sed super vos ipsas flete et super filios vestros,
For look, the days are surely coming when people wil say, "Blessed are those who are barren, thewombs that have never borne children, the breasts that have never suckled!"29 quoniam ecce venient dies, in quibus dicent: “Beatae steriles et ventres, quinon genuerunt, et ubera, quae non lactaverunt!”.
Then they wil begin to say to the mountains, "Fal on us!"; to the hills, "Cover us!"30 Tunc incipient dicere montibus: “Cadite super nos!”, et collibus: “Operitenos!”,
For if this is what is done to green wood, what wil be done when the wood is dry?'31 quia si in viridi ligno haec faciunt, in arido quid fiet? ”.
Now they were also leading out two others, criminals, to be executed with him.32 Ducebantur autem et alii duo nequam cum eo, ut interficerentur.
When they reached the place called The Skul , there they crucified him and the two criminals, one onhis right, the other on his left.33 Et postquam venerunt in locum, qui vocatur Calvariae, ibi crucifixerunt eumet latrones, unum a dextris et alterum a sinistris.
Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing.' Then they cast lots to shareout his clothing.34 Iesus autem dicebat: “Pater, dimitte illis, non enim sciunt quid faciunt ”.
Dividentes vero vestimenta eius miserunt sortes.
The people stayed there watching. As for the leaders, they jeered at him with the words, 'He savedothers, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.'35 Et stabat populusexspectans. Et deridebant illum et principes dicentes: “ Alios salvos fecit;se salvum faciat, si hic est Christus Dei electus! ”.
The soldiers mocked him too, coming up to him, offering him vinegar,36 Illudebant autem eiet milites accedentes, acetum offerentes illi
and saying, 'If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.'37 et dicentes: “ Si tu es rexIudaeorum, salvum te fac! ”.
Above him there was an inscription: 'This is the King of the Jews'.38 Erat autem et superscriptio super illum: “Hic est rex Iudaeorum ”.
One of the criminals hanging there abused him: 'Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us aswel .'39 Unus autem de his, qui pendebant, latronibus blasphemabat eum dicens: “Nonne tu es Christus? Salvum fac temetipsum et nos! ”.
But the other spoke up and rebuked him. 'Have you no fear of God at al ?' he said. 'You got the samesentence as he did,40 Respondens autemalter increpabat illum dicens: “ Neque tu times Deum, quod in eadem damnationees?
but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong.'41 Et nos quidem iuste, nam digna factis recipimus! Hic vero nihil maligessit ”.
Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.'42 Et dicebat: “ Iesu, memento mei, cum veneris in regnum tuum ”.
He answered him, 'In truth I tel you, today you wil be with me in paradise.'43 Et dixit illi: “ Amen dico tibi: Hodie mecum eris in paradiso ”.
It was now about the sixth hour and the sun's light failed, so that darkness came over the whole landuntil the ninth hour.44 Et erat iam fere hora sexta, et tenebrae factae sunt in universa terra usquein horam nonam,
The veil of the Sanctuary was torn right down the middle.45 et obscuratus est sol, et velum templi scissum est medium.
Jesus cried out in a loud voice saying, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.' With these wordshe breathed his last.46 Et clamans voce magna Iesus ait: “ Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum”; et haec dicens exspiravit.
When the centurion saw what had taken place, he gave praise to God and said, 'Truly, this was anupright man.'47 Videns autem centurio, quod factum fuerat, glorificavit Deum dicens: “ Verehic homo iustus erat! ”.
And when al the crowds who had gathered for the spectacle saw what had happened, they wenthome beating their breasts.48 Et omnis turba eorum, qui simul aderant adspectaculum istud et videbant, quae fiebant, percutientes pectora suarevertebantur.
All his friends stood at a distance; so also did the women who had accompanied him from Galilee andsaw all this happen.49 Stabant autem omnes noti eius a longe et mulieres, quae secutae erant eum aGalilaea, haec videntes.
And now a member of the Council arrived, a good and upright man named Joseph.50 Et ecce vir nomine Ioseph, qui erat decurio, vir bonus et iustus
He had not consented to what the others had planned and carried out. He came from Arimathaea, aJewish town, and he lived in the hope of seeing the kingdom of God.51 Hic non consenserat consilio et actibus eorum — ab Arimathaea civitate Iudaeorum, quiexspectabat regnum Dei,
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.52 hic accessit ad Pilatum et petiit corpus Iesu
He then took it down, wrapped it in a shroud and put it in a tomb which was hewn in stone and whichhad never held a body.53 etdepositum involvit sindone et posuit eum in monumento exciso, in quo nondumquisquam positus fuerat.
It was Preparation day and the Sabbath was beginning to grow light.54 Et dies erat Parasceves, et sabbatum illucescebat.
Meanwhile the women who had come from Galilee with Jesus were following behind. They took noteof the tomb and how the body had been laid.55 Subsecutae autem mulieres, quae cum ipso venerant de Galilaea, videruntmonumentum et quemadmodum positum erat corpus eius;
Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. And on the Sabbath day they rested, as theLaw required.56 et revertentes paraveruntaromata et unguenta et sabbato quidem siluerunt secundum mandatum.
