Luke 23

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 The whole assembly then rose, and they brought him before Pilate.	1 Tutta l’assemblea si alzò; lo condussero da Pilato
2 They began their accusation by saying, 'We found this man inciting our people to revolt, opposingpayment of the tribute to Caesar, and claiming to be Christ, a king.'	2 e cominciarono ad accusarlo: «Abbiamo trovato costui che metteva in agitazione il nostro popolo, impediva di pagare tributi a Cesare e affermava di essere Cristo re».
3 Pilate put to him this question, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' He replied, 'It is you who say it.'	3 Pilato allora lo interrogò: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?». Ed egli rispose: «Tu lo dici».
4 Pilate then said to the chief priests and the crowd, 'I find no case against this man.'	4 Pilato disse ai capi dei sacerdoti e alla folla: «Non trovo in quest’uomo alcun motivo di condanna».
5 But they persisted, 'He is inflaming the people with his teaching all over Judaea and al the way fromGalilee, where he started, down to here.'	5 Ma essi insistevano dicendo: «Costui solleva il popolo, insegnando per tutta la Giudea, dopo aver cominciato dalla Galilea, fino a qui».
6 When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man were a Galilean;	6 Udito ciò, Pilato domandò se quell’uomo era Galileo
7 and finding that he came under Herod's jurisdiction, he passed him over to Herod, who was also inJerusalem at that time.	7 e, saputo che stava sotto l’autorità di Erode, lo rinviò a Erode, che in quei giorni si trovava anch’egli a Gerusalemme.
8 Herod was delighted to see Jesus; he had heard about him and had been wanting for a long time toset eyes on him; moreover, he was hoping to see some miracle worked by him.	8 Vedendo Gesù, Erode si rallegrò molto. Da molto tempo infatti desiderava vederlo, per averne sentito parlare, e sperava di vedere qualche miracolo fatto da lui.
9 So he questioned him at some length, but without getting any reply.	9 Lo interrogò, facendogli molte domande, ma egli non gli rispose nulla.
10 Meanwhile the chief priests and the scribes were there, vigorously pressing their accusations.	10 Erano presenti anche i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi, e insistevano nell’accusarlo.
11 Then Herod, together with his guards, treated him with contempt and made fun of him; he put a richcloak on him and sent him back to Pilate.	11 Allora anche Erode, con i suoi soldati, lo insultò, si fece beffe di lui, gli mise addosso una splendida veste e lo rimandò a Pilato.
12 And though Herod and Pilate had been enemies before, they were reconciled that same day.	12 In quel giorno Erode e Pilato diventarono amici tra loro; prima infatti tra loro vi era stata inimicizia.
13 Pilate then summoned the chief priests and the leading men and the people.	13 Pilato, riuniti i capi dei sacerdoti, le autorità e il popolo,
14 He said to them, 'You brought this man before me as a popular agitator. Now I have gone into thematter myself in your presence and found no grounds in the man for any of the charges you bring against him.	14 disse loro: «Mi avete portato quest’uomo come agitatore del popolo. Ecco, io l’ho esaminato davanti a voi, ma non ho trovato in quest’uomo nessuna delle colpe di cui lo accusate;
15 Nor has Herod either, since he has sent him back to us. As you can see, the man has done nothingthat deserves death,	15 e neanche Erode: infatti ce l’ha rimandato. Ecco, egli non ha fatto nulla che meriti la morte.
16 so I shal have him flogged and then let him go.'	16 Perciò, dopo averlo punito, lo rimetterò in libertà».

18 But as one man they howled, 'Away with him! Give us Barabbas!'	18 Ma essi si misero a gridare tutti insieme: «Togli di mezzo costui! Rimettici in libertà Barabba!».
19 (This man had been thrown into prison because of a riot in the city and murder.)	19 Questi era stato messo in prigione per una rivolta, scoppiata in città, e per omicidio.
20 In his desire to set Jesus free, Pilate addressed them again,	20 Pilato parlò loro di nuovo, perché voleva rimettere in libertà Gesù.
21 but they shouted back, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!'	21 Ma essi urlavano: «Crocifiggilo! Crocifiggilo!».
22 And for the third time he spoke to them, 'But what harm has this man done? I have found no caseagainst him that deserves death, so I shal have him flogged and then let him go.'	22 Ed egli, per la terza volta, disse loro: «Ma che male ha fatto costui? Non ho trovato in lui nulla che meriti la morte. Dunque, lo punirò e lo rimetterò in libertà».
23 But they kept on shouting at the top of their voices, demanding that he should be crucified. And theirshouts kept growing louder.	23 Essi però insistevano a gran voce, chiedendo che venisse crocifisso, e le loro grida crescevano.
24 Pilate then gave his verdict: their demand was to be granted.	24 Pilato allora decise che la loro richiesta venisse eseguita.
25 He released the man they asked for, who had been imprisoned because of rioting and murder, andhanded Jesus over to them to deal with as they pleased.	25 Rimise in libertà colui che era stato messo in prigione per rivolta e omicidio, e che essi richiedevano, e consegnò Gesù al loro volere.
26 As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in fromthe country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus.	26 Mentre lo conducevano via, fermarono un certo Simone di Cirene, che tornava dai campi, e gli misero addosso la croce, da portare dietro a Gesù.
27 Large numbers of people followed him, and women too, who mourned and lamented for him.	27 Lo seguiva una grande moltitudine di popolo e di donne, che si battevano il petto e facevano lamenti su di lui.
28 But Jesus turned to them and said, 'Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep rather foryourselves and for your children.	28 Ma Gesù, voltandosi verso di loro, disse: «Figlie di Gerusalemme, non piangete su di me, ma piangete su voi stesse e sui vostri figli.
29 For look, the days are surely coming when people wil say, "Blessed are those who are barren, thewombs that have never borne children, the breasts that have never suckled!"	29 Ecco, verranno giorni nei quali si dirà: “Beate le sterili, i grembi che non hanno generato e i seni che non hanno allattato”.
30 Then they wil begin to say to the mountains, "Fal on us!"; to the hills, "Cover us!"	30 Allora cominceranno a dire ai monti: “Cadete su di noi!”, e alle colline: “Copriteci!”.
31 For if this is what is done to green wood, what wil be done when the wood is dry?'	31 Perché, se si tratta così il legno verde, che avverrà del legno secco?».
32 Now they were also leading out two others, criminals, to be executed with him.	32 Insieme con lui venivano condotti a morte anche altri due, che erano malfattori.
33 When they reached the place called The Skul , there they crucified him and the two criminals, one onhis right, the other on his left.	33 Quando giunsero sul luogo chiamato Cranio, vi crocifissero lui e i malfattori, uno a destra e l’altro a sinistra.
34 Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing.' Then they cast lots to shareout his clothing.	34 Gesù diceva: «Padre, perdona loro perché non sanno quello che fanno». Poi dividendo le sue vesti, le tirarono a sorte.
35 The people stayed there watching. As for the leaders, they jeered at him with the words, 'He savedothers, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.'	35 Il popolo stava a vedere; i capi invece lo deridevano dicendo: «Ha salvato altri! Salvi se stesso, se è lui il Cristo di Dio, l’eletto».
36 The soldiers mocked him too, coming up to him, offering him vinegar,	36 Anche i soldati lo deridevano, gli si accostavano per porgergli dell’aceto
37 and saying, 'If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.'	37 e dicevano: «Se tu sei il re dei Giudei, salva te stesso».
38 Above him there was an inscription: 'This is the King of the Jews'.	38 Sopra di lui c’era anche una scritta: «Costui è il re dei Giudei».
39 One of the criminals hanging there abused him: 'Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us aswel .'	39 Uno dei malfattori appesi alla croce lo insultava: «Non sei tu il Cristo? Salva te stesso e noi!».
40 But the other spoke up and rebuked him. 'Have you no fear of God at al ?' he said. 'You got the samesentence as he did,	40 L’altro invece lo rimproverava dicendo: «Non hai alcun timore di Dio, tu che sei condannato alla stessa pena?
41 but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong.'	41 Noi, giustamente, perché riceviamo quello che abbiamo meritato per le nostre azioni; egli invece non ha fatto nulla di male».
42 Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.'	42 E disse: «Gesù, ricòrdati di me quando entrerai nel tuo regno».
43 He answered him, 'In truth I tel you, today you wil be with me in paradise.'	43 Gli rispose: «In verità io ti dico: oggi con me sarai nel paradiso».
44 It was now about the sixth hour and the sun's light failed, so that darkness came over the whole landuntil the ninth hour.	44 Era già verso mezzogiorno e si fece buio su tutta la terra fino alle tre del pomeriggio,
45 The veil of the Sanctuary was torn right down the middle.	45 perché il sole si era eclissato. Il velo del tempio si squarciò a metà.
46 Jesus cried out in a loud voice saying, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.' With these wordshe breathed his last.	46 Gesù, gridando a gran voce, disse: «Padre, nelle tue mani consegno il mio spirito». Detto questo, spirò.
47 When the centurion saw what had taken place, he gave praise to God and said, 'Truly, this was anupright man.'	47 Visto ciò che era accaduto, il centurione dava gloria a Dio dicendo: «Veramente quest’uomo era giusto».
48 And when al the crowds who had gathered for the spectacle saw what had happened, they wenthome beating their breasts.	48 Così pure tutta la folla che era venuta a vedere questo spettacolo, ripensando a quanto era accaduto, se ne tornava battendosi il petto.
49 All his friends stood at a distance; so also did the women who had accompanied him from Galilee andsaw all this happen.	49 Tutti i suoi conoscenti, e le donne che lo avevano seguito fin dalla Galilea, stavano da lontano a guardare tutto questo.
50 And now a member of the Council arrived, a good and upright man named Joseph.	50 Ed ecco, vi era un uomo di nome Giuseppe, membro del sinedrio, buono e giusto.
51 He had not consented to what the others had planned and carried out. He came from Arimathaea, aJewish town, and he lived in the hope of seeing the kingdom of God.	51 Egli non aveva aderito alla decisione e all’operato degli altri. Era di Arimatea, una città della Giudea, e aspettava il regno di Dio.
52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.	52 Egli si presentò a Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesù.
53 He then took it down, wrapped it in a shroud and put it in a tomb which was hewn in stone and whichhad never held a body.	53 Lo depose dalla croce, lo avvolse con un lenzuolo e lo mise in un sepolcro scavato nella roccia, nel quale nessuno era stato ancora sepolto.
54 It was Preparation day and the Sabbath was beginning to grow light.	54 Era il giorno della Parasceve e già splendevano le luci del sabato.
55 Meanwhile the women who had come from Galilee with Jesus were following behind. They took noteof the tomb and how the body had been laid.	55 Le donne che erano venute con Gesù dalla Galilea seguivano Giuseppe; esse osservarono il sepolcro e come era stato posto il corpo di Gesù,
56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. And on the Sabbath day they rested, as theLaw required.	56 poi tornarono indietro e prepararono aromi e oli profumati. Il giorno di sabato osservarono il riposo come era prescritto.
