Then Jesus was led by the Spirit out into the desert to be put to the test by the devil.1 Alors Jésus fut conduit dans le désert par l'Esprit, pour être tenté par le diable.
He fasted for forty days and forty nights, after which he was hungry,2 Et lorsqu'Il eut jeûné quarante jours et quarante nuits, Il eut faim.
and the tester came and said to him, 'If you are Son of God, tel these stones to turn into loaves.'3 Et le tentateur, s'approchant, Lui dit: Si Vous êtes le Fils de Dieu, dites que ces pierres deviennent des pains.
But he replied, 'Scripture says: Human beings live not on bread alone but on every word that comesfrom the mouth of God.'4 Jésus répondit: Il est écrit: L'homme ne vit pas seulement de pain, mais de toute parole qui sort de la bouche de Dieu.
The devil then took him to the holy city and set him on the parapet of the Temple.5 Alors le diable Le transporta dans la cité sainte, et Le plaça sur le haut du temple ;
'If you are Son of God,' he said, 'throw yourself down; for scripture says: He has given his angels ordersabout you, and they will carry you in their arms in case you trip over a stone.'6 et il Lui dit : Si Vous êtes le Fils de Dieu, jetez-Vous en bas ; car il est écrit : Il a donné des ordres à Ses Anges à ton sujet, et ils te porteront dans leurs mains, de peur que tu ne heurtes ton pied contre une pierre.
Jesus said to him, 'Scripture also says: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'7 Jésus lui dit: Il est aussi écrit: Tu ne tenteras pas le Seigneur ton Dieu.
Next, taking him to a very high mountain, the devil showed him al the kingdoms of the world and theirsplendour.8 Le diable Le transporta encore sur une montagne tout à fait élevée, et Lui montra tous les royaumes du monde et leur gloire;
And he said to him, 'I wil give you al these, if you fal at my feet and do me homage.'9 et Lui dit: Je Vous donnerai toutes ces choses, si, Vous prosternant, Vous m'adorez.
Then Jesus replied, 'Away with you, Satan! For scripture says: The Lord your God is the one to whomyou must do homage, him alone you must serve.'10 Alors Jésus lui dit: Retire-toi, Satan; car il est écrit: Tu adoreras le Seigneur ton Dieu, et tu Le serviras Lui seul.
Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels appeared and looked after him.11 Alors le diable Le laissa, et voici que les Anges s'approchèrent, et ils Le servaient.
Hearing that John had been arrested he withdrew to Galilee,12 Quand Jésus eut appris que Jean avait été mis en prison, Il Se retira en Galilée;
and leaving Nazara he went and settled in Capernaum, beside the lake, on the borders of Zebulun andNaphtali.13 et ayant quitté la ville de Nazareth, Il vint habiter à Capharnaüm, ville maritime, sur les confins de Zabulon et de Nephtali,
This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:14 afin que s'accomplît ce qui avait été dit par le prophète Isaïe :
Land of Zebulun! Land of Naphtali! Way of the sea beyond Jordan.
From then onwards Jesus began his proclamation with the message, 'Repent, for the kingdom ofHeaven is close at hand.'17 Dès lors Jésus commença à prêcher, et à dire: Faites pénitence, car le royaume des Cieux est proche.
As he was walking by the Lake of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon, who was cal ed Peter, and hisbrother Andrew; they were making a cast into the lake with their net, for they were fishermen.18 Or Jésus, marchant le long de la mer de Galilée, vit deux frères, Simon, appelé Pierre, et André son frére, qui jetaient leurs filets dans la mer, car ils étaient pêcheurs.
And he said to them, 'Come after me and I wil make you fishers of people.'19 Et Il leur dit: Suivez-Moi, et Je vous ferez devenir pêcheurs d'hommes.
And at once they left their nets and followed him.20 Et eux aussitôt, laissant leurs filets, Le suivirent.
Going on from there he saw another pair of brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John;they were in their boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he cal ed them.21 Et de là, S'avançant plus loin, Il vit deux autres frères, Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et Jean son frère, dans une barque avec Zébédée leur père, réparant leurs filets ; et Il les appela.
And at once, leaving the boat and their father, they fol owed him.22 Et eux aussitôt, laissant leurs filets et leur père, Le suivirent.
He went round the whole of Galilee teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of thekingdom and curing al kinds of disease and il ness among the people.23 Et Jésus parcourait toute la Galilée, enseignant dans leurs synagogues, prêchant l'Evangile du royaume, et guérissant toute langueur et toute infirmité parmi le peuple.
His fame spread throughout Syria, and those who were suffering from diseases and painful complaintsof one kind or another, the possessed, epileptics, the paralysed, were all brought to him, and he cured them.24 Et Sa renommée se répandit dans toute la Syrie; et on Lui présenta tous ceux qui étaient malades, atteints de langueurs et de diverses souffrances, et les possédés du démon, et les lunatiques, et les paralytiques; et Il les guérit.
Large crowds fol owed him, coming from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judaea and Transjordan.25 Et des foules nombreuses Le suivirent de la Galilée, de la Décapole, de Jérusalem, de la Judée, et d'au delà du Jourdain.
