NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Jesus began to speak to them in parables once again,1 Et respondens Jesus, dixit iterum in parabolis eis, dicens :
'The kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding.2 Simile factum est regnum cælorum homini regi, qui fecit nuptias filio suo.
He sent his servants to cal those who had been invited, but they would not come.3 Et misit servos suos vocare invitatos ad nuptias, et nolebant venire.
Next he sent some more servants with the words, "Tel those who have been invited: Look, mybanquet is al prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to thewedding."4 Iterum misit alios servos, dicens : Dicite invitatis : Ecce prandium meum paravi, tauri mei et altilia occisa sunt, et omnia parata : venite ad nuptias.
But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business,5 Illi autem neglexerunt : et abierunt, alius in villam suam, alius vero ad negotiationem suam :
and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and kil ed them.6 reliqui vero tenuerunt servos ejus, et contumeliis affectos occiderunt.
The king was furious. He despatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town.7 Rex autem cum audisset, iratus est : et missis exercitibus suis, perdidit homicidas illos, et civitatem illorum succendit.
Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to beunworthy,8 Tunc ait servis suis : Nuptiæ quidem paratæ sunt, sed qui invitati erant, non fuerunt digni :
go to the main crossroads and invite everyone you can find to come to the wedding."9 ite ergo ad exitus viarum, et quoscumque inveneritis, vocate ad nuptias.
So these servants went out onto the roads and col ected together everyone they could find, bad andgood alike; and the wedding hal was fil ed with guests.10 Et egressi servi ejus in vias, congregaverunt omnes quos invenerunt, malos et bonos : et impletæ sunt nuptiæ discumbentium.
When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a weddinggarment,11 Intravit autem rex ut videret discumbentes, et vidit ibi hominem non vestitum veste nuptiali.
and said to him, "How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?" And the man wassilent.12 Et ait illi : Amice, quomodo huc intrasti non habens vestem nuptialem ? At ille obmutuit.
Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot and throw him into the darknessoutside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth."13 Tunc dicit rex ministris : Ligatis manibus et pedibus ejus, mittite eum in tenebras exteriores : ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium.
For many are invited but not al are chosen.'14 Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi.
Then the Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap him in what he said.15 Tunc abeuntes pharisæi, consilium inierunt ut caperent eum in sermone.
And they sent their disciples to him, together with some Herodians, to say, 'Master, we know that youare an honest man and teach the way of God in all honesty, and that you are not afraid of anyone, becausehuman rank means nothing to you.16 Et mittunt ei discipulos suos cum Herodianis, dicentes : Magister, scimus quia verax es, et viam Dei in veritate doces, et non est tibi cura de aliquo : non enim respicis personam hominum :
Give us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'17 dic ergo nobis quid tibi videtur, licet censum dare Cæsari, an non ?
But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, 'You hypocrites! Why are you putting me to thetest?18 Cognita autem Jesus nequitia eorum, ait : Quid me tentatis, hypocritæ ?
Show me the money you pay the tax with.' They handed him a denarius,19 ostendite mihi numisma census. At illi obtulerunt ei denarium.
and he said, 'Whose portrait is this? Whose title?'20 Et ait illis Jesus : Cujus est imago hæc, et superscriptio ?
They replied, 'Caesar's.' Then he said to them, 'Very wel , pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- andGod what belongs to God.'21 Dicunt ei : Cæsaris. Tunc ait illis : Reddite ergo quæ sunt Cæsaris, Cæsari : et quæ sunt Dei, Deo.
When they heard this they were amazed; they left him alone and went away.22 Et audientes mirati sunt, et relicto eo abierunt.
That day some Sadducees -- who deny that there is a resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him,23 In illo die accesserunt ad eum sadducæi, qui dicunt non esse resurrectionem : et interrogaverunt eum,
'Master, Moses said that if a man dies childless, his brother is to marry the widow, his sister-in-law, toraise children for his brother.24 dicentes : Magister, Moyses dixit : Si quis mortuus fuerit non habens filium, ut ducat frater ejus uxorem illius, et suscitet semen fratri suo.
Now we had a case involving seven brothers; the first married and then died without children, leavinghis wife to his brother;25 Erant autem apud nos septem fratres : et primus, uxore ducta, defunctus est : et non habens semen, reliquit uxorem suam fratri suo.
the same thing happened with the second and third and so on to the seventh,26 Similiter secundus, et tertius usque ad septimum.
and then last of al the woman herself died.27 Novissime autem omnium et mulier defuncta est.
Now at the resurrection, whose wife among the seven wil she be, since she had been married tothem al ?'28 In resurrectione ergo cujus erit de septem uxor ? omnes enim habuerunt eam.
Jesus answered them, 'You are wrong, because you understand neither the scriptures nor the powerof God.29 Respondens autem Jesus, ait illis : Erratis nescientes Scripturas, neque virtutem Dei.
For at the resurrection men and women do not marry; no, they are like the angels in heaven.30 In resurrectione enim neque nubent, neque nubentur : sed erunt sicut angeli Dei in cælo.
And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God himself said to you:31 De resurrectione autem mortuorum non legistis quod dictum est a Deo dicente vobis :
I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He is God, not of the dead, but ofthe living.'32 Ego sum Deus Abraham, et Deus Isaac, et Deus Jacob ? Non est Deus mortuorum, sed viventium.
And his teaching made a deep impression on the people who heard it.33 Et audientes turbæ, mirabantur in doctrina ejus.
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together34 Pharisæi autem audientes quod silentium imposuisset sadducæis, convenerunt in unum :
and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question,35 et interrogavit eum unus ex eis legis doctor, tentans eum :
'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?'36 Magister, quod est mandatum magnum in lege ?
Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, and with alyour mind.37 Ait illi Jesus : Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo, et in tota anima tua, et in tota mente tua.
This is the greatest and the first commandment.38 Hoc est maximum, et primum mandatum.
The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself.39 Secundum autem simile est huic : Diliges proximum tuum, sicut teipsum.
On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.'40 In his duobus mandatis universa lex pendet, et prophetæ.
While the Pharisees were gathered round, Jesus put to them this question,41 Congregatis autem pharisæis, interrogavit eos Jesus,
'What is your opinion about the Christ? Whose son is he?' They told him, 'David's.'42 dicens : Quid vobis videtur de Christo ? cujus filius est ? Dicunt ei : David.
He said to them, 'Then how is it that David, moved by the Spirit, cal s him Lord, where he says:43 Ait illis : Quomodo ergo David in spiritu vocat eum Dominum, dicens :
The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at my right hand, til I have made your enemies yourfootstool?44 Dixit Dominus Domino meo : Sede a dextris meis, donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum ?
'If David cal s him Lord, how then can he be his son?'45 Si ergo David vocat eum Dominum, quomodo filius ejus est ?
No one could think of anything to say in reply, and from that day no one dared to ask him any furtherquestions.46 Et nemo poterat ei respondere verbum : neque ausus fuit quisquam ex illa die eum amplius interrogare.
