NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Jesus began to speak to them in parables once again,1 And Jesus answering, spoke again in parables to them, saying:
'The kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding.2 The kingdom of heaven is likened to a king, who made a marriage for his son.
He sent his servants to cal those who had been invited, but they would not come.3 And he sent his servants, to call them that were invited to the marriage; and they would not come.
Next he sent some more servants with the words, "Tel those who have been invited: Look, mybanquet is al prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to thewedding."4 Again he sent other servants, saying: Tell them that were invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my beeves and fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come ye to the marriage.
But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business,5 But they neglected, and went their own ways, one to his farm, and another to his merchandise.
and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and kil ed them.6 And the rest laid hands on his servants, and having treated them contumeliously, put them to death.
The king was furious. He despatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town.7 But when the king had heard of it, he was angry, and sending his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and burnt their city.
Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to beunworthy,8 Then he saith to his servants: The marriage indeed is ready; but they that were invited were not worthy.
go to the main crossroads and invite everyone you can find to come to the wedding."9 Go ye therefore into the highways; and as many as you shall find, call to the marriage.
So these servants went out onto the roads and col ected together everyone they could find, bad andgood alike; and the wedding hal was fil ed with guests.10 And his servants going forth into the ways, gathered together all that they found, both bad and good: and the marriage was filled with guests.
When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a weddinggarment,11 And the king went in to see the guests: and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment.
and said to him, "How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?" And the man wassilent.12 And he saith to him: Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? But he was silent.
Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot and throw him into the darknessoutside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth."13 Then the king said to the waiters: Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
For many are invited but not al are chosen.'14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
Then the Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap him in what he said.15 Then the Pharisees going, consulted among themselves how to insnare him in his speech.
And they sent their disciples to him, together with some Herodians, to say, 'Master, we know that youare an honest man and teach the way of God in all honesty, and that you are not afraid of anyone, becausehuman rank means nothing to you.16 And they sent to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying: Master, we know that thou art a true speaker, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou dost not regard the person of men.
Give us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'17 Tell us therefore what dost thou think, is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, 'You hypocrites! Why are you putting me to thetest?18 But Jesus knowing their wickedness, said: Why do you tempt me, ye hypocrites?
Show me the money you pay the tax with.' They handed him a denarius,19 Shew me the coin of the tribute. And they offered him a penny.
and he said, 'Whose portrait is this? Whose title?'20 And Jesus saith to them: Whose image and inscription is this?
They replied, 'Caesar's.' Then he said to them, 'Very wel , pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- andGod what belongs to God.'21 They say to him: Caesar's. Then he saith to them: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God, the things that are God's.
When they heard this they were amazed; they left him alone and went away.22 And hearing this they wondered, and leaving him, went their ways.
That day some Sadducees -- who deny that there is a resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him,23 That day there came to him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and asked him,
'Master, Moses said that if a man dies childless, his brother is to marry the widow, his sister-in-law, toraise children for his brother.24 Saying: Master, Moses said: If a man die having no son, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up issue to his brother.
Now we had a case involving seven brothers; the first married and then died without children, leavinghis wife to his brother;25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first having married a wife, died; and not having issue, left his wife to his brother.
the same thing happened with the second and third and so on to the seventh,26 In like manner the second, and the third, and so on to the seventh.
and then last of al the woman herself died.27 And last of all the woman died also.
Now at the resurrection, whose wife among the seven wil she be, since she had been married tothem al ?'28 At the resurrection therefore whose wife of the seven shall she be? for they all had her.
Jesus answered them, 'You are wrong, because you understand neither the scriptures nor the powerof God.29 And Jesus answering, said to them: You err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.
For at the resurrection men and women do not marry; no, they are like the angels in heaven.30 For in the resurrection they shall neither marry nor be married; but shall be as the angels of God in heaven.
And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God himself said to you:31 And concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was spoken by God, saying to you:
I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He is God, not of the dead, but ofthe living.'32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
And his teaching made a deep impression on the people who heard it.33 And the multitudes hearing it, were in admiration at his doctrine.
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together34 But the Pharisees hearing that he had silenced the Sadducees, came together:
and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question,35 And one of them, a doctor of the law, asking him, tempting him:
'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?'36 Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?
Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, and with alyour mind.37 Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.
This is the greatest and the first commandment.38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.
The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself.39 And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.'40 On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets.
While the Pharisees were gathered round, Jesus put to them this question,41 And the Pharisees being gathered together, Jesus asked them,
'What is your opinion about the Christ? Whose son is he?' They told him, 'David's.'42 Saying: What think you of Christ? whose son is he? They say to him: David's.
He said to them, 'Then how is it that David, moved by the Spirit, cal s him Lord, where he says:43 He saith to them: How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying:
The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at my right hand, til I have made your enemies yourfootstool?44 The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, until I make thy enemies thy footstool?
'If David cal s him Lord, how then can he be his son?'45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
No one could think of anything to say in reply, and from that day no one dared to ask him any furtherquestions.46 And no man was able to answer him a word; neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
