Matthew 22

1 Jesus began to speak to them in parables once again,	1 Gesù riprese a parlare loro con parabole e disse:
2 'The kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding.	2 «Il regno dei cieli è simile a un re, che fece una festa di nozze per suo figlio.
3 He sent his servants to cal those who had been invited, but they would not come.	3 Egli mandò i suoi servi a chiamare gli invitati alle nozze, ma questi non volevano venire.
4 Next he sent some more servants with the words, "Tel those who have been invited: Look, mybanquet is al prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to thewedding."	4 Mandò di nuovo altri servi con quest’ordine: “Dite agli invitati: Ecco, ho preparato il mio pranzo; i miei buoi e gli animali ingrassati sono già uccisi e tutto è pronto; venite alle nozze!”.
5 But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business,	5 Ma quelli non se ne curarono e andarono chi al proprio campo, chi ai propri affari;
6 and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and kil ed them.	6 altri poi presero i suoi servi, li insultarono e li uccisero.
7 The king was furious. He despatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town.	7 Allora il re si indignò: mandò le sue truppe, fece uccidere quegli assassini e diede alle fiamme la loro città.
8 Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to beunworthy,	8 Poi disse ai suoi servi: “La festa di nozze è pronta, ma gli invitati non erano degni;
9 go to the main crossroads and invite everyone you can find to come to the wedding."	9 andate ora ai crocicchi delle strade e tutti quelli che troverete, chiamateli alle nozze”.
10 So these servants went out onto the roads and col ected together everyone they could find, bad andgood alike; and the wedding hal was fil ed with guests.	10 Usciti per le strade, quei servi radunarono tutti quelli che trovarono, cattivi e buoni, e la sala delle nozze si riempì di commensali.
11 When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a weddinggarment,	11 Il re entrò per vedere i commensali e lì scorse un uomo che non indossava l’abito nuziale.
12 and said to him, "How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?" And the man wassilent.	12 Gli disse: “Amico, come mai sei entrato qui senza l’abito nuziale?”. Quello ammutolì.
13 Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot and throw him into the darknessoutside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth."	13 Allora il re ordinò ai servi: “Legatelo mani e piedi e gettatelo fuori nelle tenebre; là sarà pianto e stridore di denti”.
14 For many are invited but not al are chosen.'	14 Perché molti sono chiamati, ma pochi eletti».
15 Then the Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap him in what he said.	15 Allora i farisei se ne andarono e tennero consiglio per vedere come coglierlo in fallo nei suoi discorsi.
16 And they sent their disciples to him, together with some Herodians, to say, 'Master, we know that youare an honest man and teach the way of God in all honesty, and that you are not afraid of anyone, becausehuman rank means nothing to you.	16 Mandarono dunque da lui i propri discepoli, con gli erodiani, a dirgli: «Maestro, sappiamo che sei veritiero e insegni la via di Dio secondo verità. Tu non hai soggezione di alcuno, perché non guardi in faccia a nessuno.
17 Give us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'	17 Dunque, di’ a noi il tuo parere: è lecito, o no, pagare il tributo a Cesare?».
18 But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, 'You hypocrites! Why are you putting me to thetest?	18 Ma Gesù, conoscendo la loro malizia, rispose: «Ipocriti, perché volete mettermi alla prova?
19 Show me the money you pay the tax with.' They handed him a denarius,	19 Mostratemi la moneta del tributo». Ed essi gli presentarono un denaro.
20 and he said, 'Whose portrait is this? Whose title?'	20 Egli domandò loro: «Questa immagine e l’iscrizione, di chi sono?».
21 They replied, 'Caesar's.' Then he said to them, 'Very wel , pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- andGod what belongs to God.'	21 Gli risposero: «Di Cesare». Allora disse loro: «Rendete dunque a Cesare quello che è di Cesare e a Dio quello che è di Dio».
22 When they heard this they were amazed; they left him alone and went away.	22 A queste parole rimasero meravigliati, lo lasciarono e se ne andarono.
23 That day some Sadducees -- who deny that there is a resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him,	23 In quello stesso giorno vennero da lui alcuni sadducei – i quali dicono che non c’è risurrezione – e lo interrogarono:
24 'Master, Moses said that if a man dies childless, his brother is to marry the widow, his sister-in-law, toraise children for his brother.	24 «Maestro, Mosè disse: Se uno muore senza figli, suo fratello ne sposerà la moglie e darà una discendenza al proprio fratello.
25 Now we had a case involving seven brothers; the first married and then died without children, leavinghis wife to his brother;	25 Ora, c’erano tra noi sette fratelli; il primo, appena sposato, morì e, non avendo discendenza, lasciò la moglie a suo fratello.
26 the same thing happened with the second and third and so on to the seventh,	26 Così anche il secondo, e il terzo, fino al settimo.
27 and then last of al the woman herself died.	27 Alla fine, dopo tutti, morì la donna.
28 Now at the resurrection, whose wife among the seven wil she be, since she had been married tothem al ?'	28 Alla risurrezione, dunque, di quale dei sette lei sarà moglie? Poiché tutti l’hanno avuta in moglie».
29 Jesus answered them, 'You are wrong, because you understand neither the scriptures nor the powerof God.	29 E Gesù rispose loro: «Vi ingannate, perché non conoscete le Scritture e neppure la potenza di Dio.
30 For at the resurrection men and women do not marry; no, they are like the angels in heaven.	30 Alla risurrezione infatti non si prende né moglie né marito, ma si è come angeli nel cielo.
31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God himself said to you:	31 Quanto poi alla risurrezione dei morti, non avete letto quello che vi è stato detto da Dio:
32 I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He is God, not of the dead, but ofthe living.'	32 Io sono il Dio di Abramo, il Dio di Isacco e il Dio di Giacobbe? Non è il Dio dei morti, ma dei viventi!».
33 And his teaching made a deep impression on the people who heard it.	33 La folla, udendo ciò, era stupita dal suo insegnamento.
34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together	34 Allora i farisei, avendo udito che egli aveva chiuso la bocca ai sadducei, si riunirono insieme
35 and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question,	35 e uno di loro, un dottore della Legge, lo interrogò per metterlo alla prova:
36 'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?'	36 «Maestro, nella Legge, qual è il grande comandamento?».
37 Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, and with alyour mind.	37 Gli rispose: «Amerai il Signore tuo Dio con tutto il tuo cuore, con tutta la tua anima e con tutta la tua mente.
38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.	38 Questo è il grande e primo comandamento.
39 The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself.	39 Il secondo poi è simile a quello: Amerai il tuo prossimo come te stesso.
40 On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.'	40 Da questi due comandamenti dipendono tutta la Legge e i Profeti».
41 While the Pharisees were gathered round, Jesus put to them this question,	41 Mentre i farisei erano riuniti insieme, Gesù chiese loro:
42 'What is your opinion about the Christ? Whose son is he?' They told him, 'David's.'	42 «Che cosa pensate del Cristo? Di chi è figlio?». Gli risposero: «Di Davide».
43 He said to them, 'Then how is it that David, moved by the Spirit, cal s him Lord, where he says:	43 Disse loro: «Come mai allora Davide, mosso dallo Spirito, lo chiama Signore, dicendo:
44 The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at my right hand, til I have made your enemies yourfootstool?	44 Disse il Signore al mio Signore: Siedi alla mia destra finché io ponga i tuoi nemici sotto i tuoi piedi?
45 'If David cal s him Lord, how then can he be his son?'	45 Se dunque Davide lo chiama Signore, come può essere suo figlio?».
46 No one could think of anything to say in reply, and from that day no one dared to ask him any furtherquestions.	46 Nessuno era in grado di rispondergli e, da quel giorno, nessuno osò più interrogarlo.
