Jesus began to speak to them in parables once again,1 And responding, Jesus again spoke to them in parables, saying:
'The kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding.2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who was king, who celebrated a wedding for his son.
He sent his servants to cal those who had been invited, but they would not come.3 And he sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding. But they were not willing to come.
Next he sent some more servants with the words, "Tel those who have been invited: Look, mybanquet is al prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to thewedding."4 Again, he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell the invited: Behold, I have prepared my meal. My bulls and fatlings have been killed, and all is ready. Come to the wedding.’
But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business,5 But they ignored this and they went away: one to his country estate, and another to his business.
and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and kil ed them.6 Yet truly, the rest took hold of his servants and, having treated them with contempt, killed them.
The king was furious. He despatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town.7 But when the king heard this, he was angry. And sending out his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and he burned their city.
Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to beunworthy,8 Then he said to his servants: ‘The wedding, indeed, has been prepared. But those who were invited were not worthy.
go to the main crossroads and invite everyone you can find to come to the wedding."9 Therefore, go out to the ways, and call whomever you will find to the wedding.’
So these servants went out onto the roads and col ected together everyone they could find, bad andgood alike; and the wedding hal was fil ed with guests.10 And his servants, departing into the ways, gathered all those whom they found, bad and good, and the wedding was filled with guests.
When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a weddinggarment,11 Then the king entered to see the guests. And he saw a man there who was not clothed in a wedding garment.
and said to him, "How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?" And the man wassilent.12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how is it that you have entered here without having a wedding garment?’ But he was dumbstruck.
Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot and throw him into the darknessoutside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth."13 Then the king said to the ministers: ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
For many are invited but not al are chosen.'14 For many are called, but few are chosen.’ ”
Then the Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap him in what he said.15 Then the Pharisees, going out, took counsel as to how they might entrap him in speech.
And they sent their disciples to him, together with some Herodians, to say, 'Master, we know that youare an honest man and teach the way of God in all honesty, and that you are not afraid of anyone, becausehuman rank means nothing to you.16 And they sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying: “Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and that you teach the way of God in truth, and that the influence of others is nothing to you. For you do not consider the reputation of men.
Give us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'17 Therefore, tell us, how does it seem to you? Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar, or not?”
But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, 'You hypocrites! Why are you putting me to thetest?18 But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said: “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?
Show me the money you pay the tax with.' They handed him a denarius,19 Show me the coin of the census tax.” And they offered him a denarius.
and he said, 'Whose portrait is this? Whose title?'20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose image is this, and whose inscription?”
They replied, 'Caesar's.' Then he said to them, 'Very wel , pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- andGod what belongs to God.'21 They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Then render to Caesar what is of Caesar; and to God what is of God.”
When they heard this they were amazed; they left him alone and went away.22 And hearing this, they wondered. And having left him behind, they went away.
That day some Sadducees -- who deny that there is a resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him,23 In that day, the Sadducees, who say there is to be no resurrection, approached him. And they questioned him,
'Master, Moses said that if a man dies childless, his brother is to marry the widow, his sister-in-law, toraise children for his brother.24 saying: “Teacher, Moses said: If anyone will have died, having no son, his brother shall marry his wife, and he shall raise up offspring to his brother.
Now we had a case involving seven brothers; the first married and then died without children, leavinghis wife to his brother;25 Now there were seven brothers with us. And the first, having taken a wife, died. And having no offspring, he left his wife to his brother:
the same thing happened with the second and third and so on to the seventh,26 similarly with the second, and the third, even to the seventh.
and then last of al the woman herself died.27 And last of all, the woman also passed away.
Now at the resurrection, whose wife among the seven wil she be, since she had been married tothem al ?'28 In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”
Jesus answered them, 'You are wrong, because you understand neither the scriptures nor the powerof God.29 But Jesus responded to them by saying: “You have gone astray by knowing neither the Scriptures, nor the power of God.
For at the resurrection men and women do not marry; no, they are like the angels in heaven.30 For in the resurrection, they shall neither marry, nor be given in marriage. Instead, they shall be like the Angels of God in heaven.
And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God himself said to you:31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken by God, saying to you:
I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He is God, not of the dead, but ofthe living.'32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?’ He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
And his teaching made a deep impression on the people who heard it.33 And when the crowds heard this, they wondered at his doctrine.
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together34 But the Pharisees, hearing that he had caused the Sadducees to be silent, came together as one.
and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question,35 And one of them, a doctor of the law, questioned him, to test him:
'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?'36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, and with alyour mind.37 Jesus said to him: “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God from all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
This is the greatest and the first commandment.38 This is the greatest and first commandment.
The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself.39 But the second is similar to it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.'40 On these two commandments the entire law depends, and also the prophets.”
While the Pharisees were gathered round, Jesus put to them this question,41 Then, when the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus questioned them,
'What is your opinion about the Christ? Whose son is he?' They told him, 'David's.'42 saying: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “David’s.”
He said to them, 'Then how is it that David, moved by the Spirit, cal s him Lord, where he says:43 He said to them: “Then how can David, in the Spirit, call him Lord, saying:
The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at my right hand, til I have made your enemies yourfootstool?44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool?’
'If David cal s him Lord, how then can he be his son?'45 So then, if David calls him Lord, how can he be his son?”
No one could think of anything to say in reply, and from that day no one dared to ask him any furtherquestions.46 And no one was able to respond to him a word. And neither did anyone dare, from that day forward, to question him.
